Faculty development programs in the context of higher education in Portugal
Before the Bologna reform, there was little emphasis on the teaching skills of higher education instructors, with a greater focus on their research abilities. The Bologna process, however, prioritized active student learning over traditional teaching methods, sparking discussions about learning, teaching, assessment, and lifelong education and training. Universities were then encouraged to concentrate on creating a pedagogy tailored to the university setting. Despite this, scientific production and bibliometrics have continued to hold the most weight due to institutional evaluation and the evaluation of teachers, research units, and access to competitive funding for research projects. The pandemic crisis highlighted weaknesses in the teaching and learning process, prompting institutions to invest more in training higher education teachers. Consequently, various teacher training programs have been developed by higher education institutions in recent years
The challenge of digital transformation in schools: what can we learn from the Escol@s D’igitais project?
This study evaluates the qualitative effects of the Escol@s Digitais Project, a program implemented between 2021 and 2024 in 12 school clusters in the municipality of Amadora, Portugal, aimed at promoting the curricular integration of digital technologies in the first cycle of basic education. Data was collected between November and December 2023 through focus group sessions and an alternative form, involving 31 teachers who participated in the project. The content analysis conducted, based on categories and thematic relationships, revealed significant patterns and divergences across three key areas of analysis: (1) importance, participation, and involvement of teachers; (2) the project's impact on learning and school dynamics; and (3) motivations, challenges, and recommendations. Among the main results, the recognition of the project's importance stands out, both in reinforcing teachers' confidence and comfort using digital tools and in expanding their knowledge of pedagogical innovation practices using digital technologies. Additionally, results show very positive perceptions regarding the project's impact on student learning, with explicit references to the development of essential learning goals outlined in the official curriculum, including the development of digital skills and other transversal ones, such as autonomy and critical thinking. Some aspects of school dynamics are also highlighted, namely the project's contribution to strengthening collaboration between teachers and improving school-family interactions. Concerning the factors for adopting digital technologies in the classroom, pedagogical reasons and specific training in technology stand out as central. Despite the various benefits associated with the project, infrastructure limitations and the management of curricular and pedagogical time were widely mentioned by teachers as barriers to the implementation of technology-based pedagogical practices. Looking ahead to improvements in future projects supporting digital transformation in schools, it is recommended that technical-pedagogical support be strengthened, with increased investment in adequate infrastructure, continuous support for teacher professional development, and greater involvement of students and families. Altogether, results suggest that projects like Escol@s Digitais can drive pedagogical transformations and facilitate the digital transition in the school context. However, the effective success of such projects remains dependent on structural and cultural conditions that favor the intentional and systematic integration of digital technologies into teaching and, above all, into students' learning processes. This work is funded by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P., in the framework of the UIDB/04312 – Centro de Investigação em Educação e Psicologia

A patogénese é complexa e ainda mal compreendida.
Clinical Approach to Atopic Dermatitis in Dogs
This report follows the curricular internship for the Integrated Master's Degree in
Veterinary Medicine at the University of Évora, which was carried out at the Bom Jesus
Veterinary Hospital between October 1, 2023 and March 1, 2024.
This report is divided into two parts, the first part being a brief description of the
caseload and activities carried out during the internship, and a second part consisting of
the development of the theme “Clinical Approach to Atopic Dermatitis in Dogs”,
followed by the discussion of some clinical cases monitored during the internship.
Canine atopic dermatitis is frequently encountered in small animal clinical
practice and has a negative impact on the quality of life of animals and their owners.
The pathogenesis is complex and still poorly understood. Diagnosis is obtained through
anamnesis, physical and dermatological examination and complementary tests.
Therapeutic management involves a multifaceted approach, with etiological, systemic
and topical treatment, the only treatment option to revert the clinical symptoms is the
immunotherapy of specific allergen
Career decision ambivalence and career change ambivalence: A case study of two intertwined concepts
The concept of ambivalence has received little attention within the field of vocational psychology.
In this article, we distinguish between two types of ambivalence that may surface during the career
counseling process: career decision ambivalence (i.e., ambivalence between career options) and
career counseling change ambivalence (i.e., ambivalence about engaging in career counseling-related
changes). Using a single case study design of a 3-session career counseling process over 2 months
including a two-chair dialogue intervention, we examine how these two types of ambivalence
occur and evolve. We use mixed method to analyze the case, including fine-grained coding of the
sessions’ content, as well as pre-, post-, and follow-up measures. Results highlight career decision
ambivalence and career counseling change ambivalence as distinct phenomena, occurring and
evolving differently throughout the counseling sessions. The theoretical and practical implications
of these findings are discussed
As
judiaria eborense e visando compreender as transformações que sofreu pós-expulsão; - The impacts of the Edict of Expulsion (1496) in medieval Jewish quarters: the case
of Évora -
Abstract:
Between 1496 and 1497, Jewish communities formally disappeared from Portugal,
escaping or forcefully converting after the edict promulgated by king Dom Manuel.
Jeweries therefore lost purpose as segregation spaces, suffering mutations that remain
gapping in Portuguese historiography. This dissertation analyzes the impacts of the Edict
of Expulsion (1496) in these neighborhoods, particularly in the Judiaria Nova of Évora.
I shall ascertain how this space was appropriated by various social groups, its functional
and morphological changes, and the processes of elimination/disappearance of Jewish
memory it suffered. I will cross material sources, considering the current form of this
urban segment, and written sources present in royal and municipal chanceries; criminal
proceedings from the Inquisition; property records, inventories and contracts from
institutions that owned property in the old Jewish neighborhood. I will adopt a chronology
set between 1408 and 1550, framing the jewery of Évora and understanding the changes
it suffered post-expulsion
Ecological quality assessment of estuarine macrobenthic communities using an integrative approach
Macrobenthic communities play a crucial role in the functioning of estuarine ecosystems and serve as bioindicators of environmental quality. This study assessed the ecological quality of an estuarine system using the AMBI and M-AMBI indices. The following parameters were considered: (i) environmental factors (total organic matter, organic carbon, grain size, calcium carbonate), (ii) sediment trace metals (Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, Co, Ni, Hg, Li, As), (iii) species composition (morphological and molecular identification), and (iv) anthropogenic activities. The results demonstrated notable differences between study areas, reflecting hydrodynamic processes and human activities. The AMBI index indicated that all areas exhibited conditions classified as “slightly disturbed.” However, the composition of the ecological groups and M-AMBI results differed according to the identification method. This approach allowed for a more complete understanding of communities, by integrating the influence of anthropogenic activities on the sediment and macrobenthic communities, highlighting the importance of using both identification methodologies
Information flow between asset classes during extreme events
The interconnectedness between asset classes becomes particularly relevant during extreme
events, as market stress amplifies risk spillovers and impacts asset relationships, influencing risk
transmission and financial market stability. While existing studies often examine financial interdependencies,
including extended periods, they frequently focus on specific markets or asset
classes, limiting the understanding of cross-asset contagion effects. Thus, it is crucial to grasp the
interconnectedness among asset classes and how they communicate information under different
economic conditions. This research bridges the gap by applying the transfer entropy approach to
analyze the evolving connections among various asset classes from April 2017 to September 2024,
spanning the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia–Ukraine war. The findings reveal that stocks
and cryptocurrencies consistently are net information transmitters to the system. Currency
benchmarks and gold tend to receive information from the system during increased tension,
reflecting their role in absorbing risk-driven capital flows. This study challenges the idea that
cryptocurrencies are separate from traditional financial markets and shows how they are
becoming more integrated. By employing net transfer entropy within a financial network analysis
framework, this study uncovers time-varying shifts in market interdependencies and, thus, an
enhanced description of financial contagion dynamics. The dynamic nature of such relationships
highlights the need for adaptive portfolio strategies and enhanced risk assessment models. Our
results have direct implications for portfolio management and risk assessment. Investors can use
this study’s findings to recognize assets that are sources of systemic risk or safe haven assets,
facilitating adaptative changes in their portfolios. Policymakers and regulators can use these
findings to forecast systemic vulnerabilities and implement strategies aiming to reduce financial
instability in times of crisis
The Vineyard Microbiome: How Climate and the Main Edaphic Factors Shape Microbial Communities
The soil microbiome is a complex system that encompasses millions of microbes
including archaea, bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses. The role of abiotic factors is
crucial in shaping the distribution patterns of microorganisms, its abundance and also
the interactions between species, from local to the global level. In the particular case of
the vineyard, the microbial communities have a potential impact in both the grapevine
development and health and, later on, in the grape production and quality. The present
review focuses on how the composition of soil microbial communities is influenced by
climate and several edaphic factors, such as soil moisture, soil nutrients and soil pH. It
also discusses the role of microorganisms and their metabolic activity on the fermentation
process, influencing the sensorial characterisation of the wine and suggesting the definition
of a microbial terroir
