Collaborating to cross subject boundaries with digital technologies: designing a training plan through action research.
This study aimed to understand teachers’ conceptions and practices concerning collaborative work around planning pedagogical strategies with digital technologies. And to help design a training plan based on the F@R Model (TrainingAction-Reflection). This is an innovative piece of work, in terms of methodology, in this area of study and intervention, and corresponds to the first of three action-research cycles designed. The participants were five teachers from the 2nd cycle of basic education in Portugal (equivalent to ISCED 2). Data collection was centred on interviews, with a focus on content analysis. In this study, the importance attributed by the participants to collaborative work, as well as to inter- and transdisciplinary practices, was verified. However, it turned out that these practices have only taken place informally and without planning. Structural and personal challenges and favourable factors for integrating digital technologies were highlighted. Difficulties related to access to technology were the main ones, with the highest number of references. The participants prioritised a collaborative and practical approach to training. In this way, it was confirmed that the approach followed was a promising strategy for planning the work to be done, which supported the design of the training plan. This work is financed by national funds from FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., in the framework of the UIDB/04312 – Centro de Investigação em Educação e Psicologia, and under the scope of UIDEF — Unidade de Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Educação e Formação, UIDB/04107/2020, https://doi.org/10.54499/UIDB/04107/2020
Determine the Symbiotic nitrogen fixation bacterial community structure in legume crops
The legume symbiosis with rhizobia (Root Nodulating Bacteria, BNLs) has been recognized as essential to sustainable agriculture since the intimate partnership has the ability to relieve host legumes from nitrogen fertilizer reliance and boost soil fertility. Legume–BNL interactions take place in the rhizosphere, where the two symbiotic partners exchange signals (such as flavonoids released by the host plant and Nod factors produced by the bacterium). Subsequently, the cortical cells in the roots divide, triggering an infection process that allows the bacteria to enter the nodule cells. Rhizobia fall into seven bacterial families (Rhizobiaceae, Bradyrhizobiaceae, Phyllobacteriaceae, Methylobacteriaceae, Brucellaceae, Hyphomicrobiaceae from α-Proteobacteria, and Burkholderiaceae from β-Proteobacteria). The first step in studying legume/BNL symbioses is to understand the methods for isolating and characterizing bacteria. Here, we provide a simple procedure for employing culture-dependent and culture-independent techniques for determining the bacterial community structure involved in the symbiotic nitrogen fixation in legume crops
New Family Dynamics and Family Tourism – Challenges and Impacts in the Context of Tourism in Portugal?
The family morphology is changing: marriages are decreasing, divorce rates have risen, and same-sex families are growing globally (Eurostat, 2021; ILGA, 2021). Despite this, families remain central, with 28.8% of EU-27 families having dependent children in 2019 (Eurostat, 2021). While family tourism benefits are recognized (Lehto et al., 2012; Lima et al., 2021), studies on behavioral differences and effects across family morphologies remain scarce (Lima & Eusébio, 2023). This work stems from an ongoing project aimed at reflecting on these changes and their impact on tourism
Examegerontopsicomotor (EGP) e o Montreal Assessment Test (MoCA).
Psicomotora (BPM) e o D2-Test of Attention.
no perfil psicomotor e cognitivo.
beneficamente as competências e atitudes socio-emocionais das crianças e idosos; - The Montessori Method in an intergenerational intervention: analysing the
psychomotor profile of case studies
Abstract:
This study investigated the effects of an intergenerational intervention using the
Montessori method as a mediator for children with specific educational needs and
elderly people with an associated pathology and/or cognitive impairment. The study
included 6 participants (3 children and 3 elderly people), who formed 3 pairs, each made
up of a child and an elderly person. The three pairs benefited from an intergenerational
intervention based on the Montessori method for 6 months, on a weekly basis. Before and
after the intervention, the psychomotor profile and cognitive state of each participant were
assessed, as well as the socio-emotional skills and attitudes of the interaction between the
two. To assess the psychomotor profile and cognitive state of the elderly, the
Psychomotor-Engineering Examination (EGP) and the Montreal Assessment Test
(MoCA) were used. The Psychomotor Battery (BPM) and the D2-Test of Attention were
used to assess the psychomotor profile and cognitive status of children. The socioemotional skills and attitudes of both were observed using a Behavior Observation Grid
(GOC). In the elderly, the intervention did not reveal significant improvements in the
psychomotor and cognitive profile. However, there was a slight increase in socioemotional skills when interacting with the children. In the children, there were
improvements in both the psychomotor profile and the cognitive state, with visible
progress in attention and social interaction. Despite the scarcity of studies, these results
suggest that intergenerational interventions based on the Montessori method have a
beneficial impact on the socio-emotional skills and attitudes of children and the elderl
Sinewave frequency estimation based on fractional Interpolated Discrete Fourier Transform
Frequency estimation is crucial in numerous scientific applications and have led to the development of various algorithms. Most approaches use the Discrete Fourier Transform followed by spectral interpolation. However, limitations arise when sinewave frequencies align closely with DFT lines especially for low Signal-to-Noise Ratios. Recent advances have employed non-integer Goertzel filters to compute Discrete Time Fourier Transform components, leading to improved frequency estimation.
This work introduces the Generalized Fractional Interpolated Discrete Fourier Transform, which uses fractional values of the frequency resolution to improve frequency estimation, especially at low Signal-to-Noise Ratios. A closed-form, non-iterative, frequency estimation formula is derived. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is analysed through numerical simulations and compared with other interpolation methods for different frequencies, Signal-to-Noise Ratios and number of acquired samples
Abstract:
The possibility of achieving more efficient animals at food level is an added value for farms and therefore it is important to study different parameters of feed efficiency. The Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) is one of the widely used measures but has problems of independence from other variables, such as Average Daily Gain (AVG) and Average Metabolic Weight (AMW). On the other hand, Residual Feed Intake (RFI) has proved to be an accurate and reliable parameter to assess feed efficiency.
In this study, 27 bulls of the Mertolenga breed were used, divided into three groups, collecting data from their food intake and live weight, over 140 days. For the calculation of RFI, a linear regression model was established to determine the Expected Feed Intake.
The results showed that there are animals with similar ADG and live weight but that differ in RFI (animals with negative RFI are more efficient), ensuring independence from other variables, becoming a good selection parameter
The study of two impressive simulacra at Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Almada, Portugal
Simulacra, or full-body reliquaries of corpi santi, have largely been overlooked in the discourse of the past century by the
Church, the general public, and scholars. This work investigates two noteworthy cases among simulacra—two young individuals,
St. Primogenita and St. Theodore—from Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Almada in Portugal. Based on a historical and analytical
approach, the study examines the simulacra context, assembly methods, materials, symbols of martyrdom, and adornments. Their
possible arrival in Portugal in the late eighteenth century is supported by the Bishop’s seal and textile features that reflect the
fashion of that period. Radiographic imaging and particularly borescope inspections revealed distinct assembly techniques, with
St. Theodore displaying meticulous anatomical assembly, while St. Primogenita’s construction is less precise. However, access to
the cranium fragments of St. Primogenita revealed an elaborate consolidation method. SEM–EDS, FT-IR, and Py-GC–MS analyses
identified a fibrous material coated with a dark brown paste, likely used to bond the unfused parts of the ectocranium fragments of a
young individual, as well as a paste applied to reinforce the endocranium. Martyrdom symbols further distinguished the simulacra,
with St. Primogenita adorned with a silk petal crown attached using animal glue, whereas St. Theodore’s crown was crafted from
pigment-dyed cellulosic materials. LC-DAD-MS analysis revealed the natural dyes used in coloured threads. Only St. Primogenita
retained fragments from a phial of blood, where a creative method may have been employed to emphasise the blood content. This
investigation highlighted the complexity and artistry behind these simulacra
Exploring a forgotten heritage: the case study of Saint Vincent Martyr’s simulacrum
The simulacrum of Saint Vincent Martyr, one of four corpi santi at the Major Seminary of Coimbra, Portugal, features
Roman-origin bonesmounted in metallic frameworks and covered with intricate Baroque garments. Enshrined within the urn-altar in
Saint Michael’s Chapel, its remains were exhumed from the Catacomb of Priscila and brought to Portugal in 1760 by Bishop Count
D. Miguel da Anunciação. This study employs a multianalytical approach to examine the simulacrum’s materiality, construction, and
state of conservation. Non-invasive techniques, including digital radiography and borescope inspection, assessed structural integrity
and skeletal arrangement. When feasible, micro-samples were collected for laboratory analysis. Optical microscopy and scanning
electron microscopy with chemical analysis were used to analyse paper, textile fibres, and metal threads, revealing evidence of both
craftsmanship and deterioration patterns. Additionally, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy characterised adhesives, coatings,
and pigments, while chromatographic techniques identified dyes in garments and wax components on the face. Results corroborated
photochemical damage, textile decay, and structural alterations, with in situ radiographic analyses revealing misaligned skeletal
remains. Notably, softwood pulp paper with kaolin and an emerald green pigment in the flower crown points to a 19th-century local
intervention after the French invasions of 1810. Furthermore, calcium carbonate in wax and lead-based pigments with iron oxides on
the simulacrum’s face indicate intentional methods to enhance durability and mimic human features. This study integrates material
analysis with historical context to deepen understanding of Saint Vincent’s simulacrum, tracing its material transformations and
informing future conservation strategies for similar artefacts
