International brands and corporate strategy: a case study in the Portuguese wine industry
Although there is a huge debate on the reasons for internationalization, the strength of brands and branding are not among the most studied aspects in the literature.
For companies, brands are valuable assets and branding may be used as a sign of quality leading consumers to repurchase the brand and an increasing market entry barrier for competitors, an important aspect is that branding underpins relational strategies, especially in the wine market. To understand the importance of brands as enablers of international strategies, namely its international positioning, a case study was developed seeking to understand the role of brands in the internationalization of Sogrape, a leading Portuguese company in the wine industry. Analizing Sogrape’s main brands, in terms of their performance in national and international markets, it
is possible to conclude that branding plays a crucial role in the internationalization of Sogrape, segmentation and positioning strategies being extremely important for synchronizing and leveraging the national market with the outwards expansion of the firm.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Collaborative new product development in SMEs and large industrial firms: relationships upstream and downstream in the supply chain
The aim of this chapter is to compare collaborative new product development (CNPD) established by industrial companies with their suppliers and customers, according to their size and the type of innovation generated. To do so, eight in-depth case studies were analyzed, based on semi-structured interviews. The findings show that CNPD with suppliers in more active than with clients. The results also show that firm size is important in CNPD activities namely when product differentiation and large scale production activities are at stake. From another perspective, the results show that the development of processes and management methodologies in upstream activities are not extensively used. The chapter contributes to knowledge about CNPD by comparing how upstream and downstream are affected based on firm size and the type of innovation generated.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Progressive catholicism in Portugal: considerations on political activism (1958-1974)
This article seeks to show that the national alliance between Estado Novo and the Catholic Church favored the rise to prominence of those Catholics who, in 1958, abruptly broke with the Salazarist dictatorship and felt legitimated by the theological renewal associated with the Vatican II Council. These “progressive Catholics” were not the only Catholics who opposed the Estado Novo but they were certainly the most visible on the Portuguese political scene and took the most radical positions during the colonial war (1961-1974). May 68 and liberation theology also left their mark on the Portuguese Catholic left, though it retained a pluralist outlook. The post-conciliar crisis was reflected in high-profile departures from the institutional Catholic Church and radical criticism of the ecclesiastical and political authorities.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Determinants of churn in telecommunication services: a systematic literature review
The telecommunications industry is particularly competitive and characterized by very high churn rates. The literature on the topic is vast, but studies on the determinants of churn behavior are dispersed, failing to provide a comprehensive view of the state of the art. Based on this research gap, this article aims to contribute to developing the literature on customer churn in the telecommunications sector by summarizing the current state of research, and identifying the main determinants of churn and switching intentions. It provides a systematic literature review (SLR) of 37 articles on the topic published between 1999 and 2022. The results reveal the existence of two research streams. The first, in which the studies are based on surveys examining the alleged intentions of subscribers to change operators, with criteria such as satisfaction and attitudes as predictors, and the second, dealing with subscribers’ actual switching behavior and relating this to behaviors and characteristics extracted from internal customer management systems. All independent variables used to explain switching intention or real churn were mapped. It was found that age, gender, satisfaction, switching costs and barriers, and service quality are the most important determinants highlighted by the literature. Our study also outlines some insightful practical implications, which could be extended to other service sectors. The paper ends with a research agenda for future studies according to the gaps detected by the study’s results. Among its limitations, this research excludes papers related to predictive models and studies not in English.Funding No funding was received for conducting this study. Supply chain management: identifying innovative suppliers
The main purpose of this chapter is to develop an exploratory proposal for identifying innovative suppliers, creating knowledge in an area not very deeply explored. Based on a literature revision based on the innovative supplier identification and management, the study suggests that innovative suppliers are highly specialized and technically competent companies, located nearby their customers and take part on their client’s improvement program. Based on the literature revision, a framework analyzing client-supplier relationships throughout the supply chain is proposed. The framework uses the strategic alignment concept between clients and suppliers. Finally, 61 questions were developed to identify the innovative suppliers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Governance with complex structures: evidence from Western European countries
This paper investigates if the existence of complex structures plays an important role in corporate governance. It uses GMM estimation on a panel of Western European firms. We find that the presence of a second and third large shareholder has a significant positive effect on firm value. This study underlines the importance of the number of blockholders as a determinant of firm value, when taken as a moderator of the contestability effect. It shows that the legal context and company-specific characteristics play a crucial moderating role for contestability. In contrast to previous research, we find that contestability plays a less relevant role in family firms. We also find that this last result does not vary significantly with the identity of the remaining elements of the
coalition. Also, our study suggests that contestability is less important in companies led
by majority shareholders.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
