    Describing and interpreting an immersive learning case with the immersion cube and the immersive learning brain

    Current descriptions of immersive learning cases are often difficult or impossible to compare. This is due to a myriad of different options on what details to include, which aspects are relevant, and on the descriptive approaches employed. Also, these aspects often combine very specific details with more general guidelines or indicate intents and rationales without clarifying their implementation. In this paper we provide a method to describe immersive learning cases that is structured to enable comparisons, yet flexible enough to allow researchers and practitioners to decide which aspects to include. This method leverages a taxonomy that classifies educational aspects at three levels (uses, practices, and strategies) and then utilizes two frameworks, the Immersive Learning Brain and the Immersion Cube, to enable a structured description and interpretation of immersive learning cases. The method is then demonstrated on a published immersive learning case on training for wind turbine maintenance using virtual reality. Applying the method results in a structured artifact, the Immersive Learning Case Sheet, that tags the case with its proximal uses, practices, and strategies, and refines the free text case description to ensure that matching details are included. This contribution is thus a case description method in support of future comparative research of immersive learning cases. We then discuss how the resulting description and interpretation can be leveraged to change immersion learning cases, by enriching them (considering low-effort changes or additions) or innovating (exploring more challenging avenues of transformation).     Este estudio investiga la autopercepción de habilidades digitales, la capacitación por entidades españolas del tercer sector para mejorarlas en diversos campos y la integración social y profesional femenina. Este trabajo destaca las intervenciones individuales como promotoras de inclusión digital y empoderamiento. Basado en la teoría de la autodeterminación, propone investigar la percepción y el aprovechamiento de habilidades digitales de mujeres en un contexto significativamente motivado, tanto intrínseca como extrínsecamente. Los resultados muestran que la mejora de las habilidades digitales, evaluada de forma positiva por las participantes, se correlaciona significativamente con un aumento de la integración social y del individuo. Se destaca la importancia de continuar desarrollando políticas educativas y sociales que fomenten un enfoque inclusivo y equitativo hacia la capacitación digital.Esse estudo investiga a autopercepção de habilidades digitais, o treinamento de entidades espanholas do terceiro setor para melhorá-las em diversos campos e a integração social e profissional feminina.     Modelação estatística aplicada a admissão dos estudantes na Universidade de São Tomé e Príncipe

    O presente estudo investiga alguns fatores que influenciam a admissão de estudantes na Universidade de São Tomé e Príncipe (USTP) por meio da aplicação de técnicas avançadas de análise estatística, de forma a proporcionar insights que possam conduzir a melhorias nas práticas de selecção e a formulação de políticas mais inclusivas. Dada a heterogeneidade das disciplinas que compõem os cursos do ensino secundário, esta análise contemplou duas situações distintas: uma para os alunos de Letras (História como nuclear) e outra para os alunos de Ciências (Matemática como nuclear). Os resultados revelaram que variáveis como a idade, género, notas em disciplinas específicas (Biologia, Física/Química, Língua Portuguesa, Matemática, História, Direito, Psicologia/Sociologia), e a escola de origem dos candidatos possuem efeitos estatisticamente significativos tanto na média final do ensino secundário quanto na probabilidade de admissão em diferentes departamentos da universidade. A análise indicou que mais de 75% da variação na média do ensino secundário pode ser explicada pelas variáveis incluídas no modelo de Regressão Linear Múltipla. Com base nos dados do período em estudo, verificou-se que no grupo dos alunos admitidos em cursos de Ciências a média final diminui em média 0,211 pontos com o aumento da idade e que, inversamente, a média final dos alunos dos cursos de Letras aumenta 0,009 pontos, em média, com o aumento da idade. A Regressão Logística Multinomial mostrou que os modelos que incorporaram as variáveis idade, média final do 12º ano, notas em Matemática, Língua Portuguesa, História, Direito, Física/Química, Sociologia/Psicologia, género, residência e as escolas onde os estudantes concluíram o ensino secundário contribuem significativamente para a discriminação dos cursos afetos aos departamentos da USTP. Igualmente, mostrou que a probabilidade de inscrição em determinados cursos diminui ou aumenta significativamente com base nas variáveis analisadas. O estudo realizado mostrou que a modelação estatística é uma ferramenta eficaz para compreender e melhorar o processo de admissão na USTP, fornecendo insights valiosos para a tomada de decisões e contribuindo para a formação de um corpo discente mais diversificado e talentoso. Além disso, os modelos revelaram que mais 60% dos estudantes matricularam-se nos cursos afetos aos departamentos onde as probabilidades de admissão eram mais altas.The present study investigates the factors influencing student admission at the University of São Tomé and Príncipe (USTP) through the application of advanced statistical analysis techniques, providing insights that could lead to improvements in selection practices and the formulation of more inclusive policies. Given the heterogeneity of subjects that constitute secondary education courses, this analysis considered two distinct scenarios: one for Humanities students (with History as the core subject) and another for Science students (with Mathematics as the core subject). The results revealed that variables such as age, gender, grades in specific subjects (Biology, Physics/Chemistry, Portuguese Language, Mathematics, History, Law, Psychology/Sociology), and the candidates' originating schools have statistically significant effects on both the final secondary education average and the probability of admission to different university departments. The analysis indicated that more than 75% of the variation in the secondary education average can be explained by the variables included in the Multiple Linear Regression model. Based on the data from the study period, it was found that in the group of students admitted to Science courses, the final average decreases by an average of 0.211 points with increasing age, whereas, conversely, the final average of Humanities students increases by an average of 0.009 points with increasing age. The Multinomial Logistic Regression showed that models incorporating variables such as age, final average of the 12th grade, grades in Mathematics, Portuguese Language, History, Law, Physics/Chemistry, Sociology/Psychology, gender, residence, and the schools where students completed secondary education significantly contribute to distinguishing courses related to USTP departments. It also demonstrated that the likelihood of enrollment in certain courses significantly decreases or increases based on the analyzed variables. The study demonstrated that statistical modeling is an effective tool for understanding and improving the admission process at USTP, providing valuable insights for decision-making and contributing to the formation of a more diverse and talented student body.     Tese de Mestrado em Gestão da Informação e Bibliotecas Escolares, apresentada à Universidade AbertaEsta investigação explora uma temática que, ao longo do tempo, se tem apresentado como uma das grandes debilidades do nosso país, a leitura. Com efeito, são preocupantes as fragilidades que a população portuguesa, especialmente a população em idade escolar, tem evidenciado no que diz respeito à leitura e aos seus hábitos. O objetivo deste estudo é perceber de que modo as bibliotecas escolares, no distrito de Leiria, são capazes de promover o gosto pelo livro e pela leitura contribuindo, assim, para melhorar os índices de leitura da sua população estudantil. Optou-se pelo estudo de caso com recurso a uma metodologia de cariz quantitativo. Os dados utilizados foram recolhidos das respostas aos inquéritos realizados pela Rede de Bibliotecas Escolares MABE 2019 (Modelo de Avaliação da Biblioteca Escolar) e aplicados aos alunos e professores das bibliotecas escolares do distrito de Leiria, tendo-se analisado o domínio B - Leitura e literacia e, escolhido as questões que mais diretamente estão relacionadas com a leitura. Pode-se concluir que as bibliotecas escolares do distrito de Leiria promovem hábitos de leitura e estimulam o interesse e o gosto dos alunos para a leitura, embora não se verifiquem índices de articulação expressivos, dentro da comunidade escolar, nem exista um significativo envolvimento com as famílias.This research explores a topic that, over time, has presented itself as one of our country's greatest weaknesses: reading. In fact, the weaknesses that the Portuguese population, especially the school-age population, has shown with regard to reading and their habits are worrying. The objective of this study is to understand how school libraries, in the district of Leiria, are capable of promoting a love of books and reading, thus contributing to improving the reading rates of their student population. We opted for a case study using a quantitative methodology. The data used were collected from responses to surveys carried out by the MABE 2019 School Library Network (School Library Assessment Model) and applied to students and teachers from school libraries in the district of Leiria, having analyzed domain B - Reading and literacy and, choosing the questions that are most directly related to reading. It can be concluded that school libraries in the Leiria district promote reading habits and stimulate students' interest and enjoyment in reading, although there are no significant levels of articulation within the school community, nor is there significant involvement with families

    Tese de Mestrado em Informação e Sistemas Empresariais, em associação com o Instituto Superior Técnico, apresentada à Universidade AbertaA transformação digital dos processos organizacionais tornou-se essencial na modernização da ges-tão das empresas, especialmente na área dos Recursos Humanos (RH), onde a precisão e a eficiên-cia são fundamentais. Este estudo centra-se na otimização dos processos manuais e baseados em papel de registo das folhas de ponto e trocas de serviço na Falck SCI Portugal, através da automati-zação. Com a implementação de um sistema de reconhecimento facial e esquelético, aliado à Au-tomatização Robótica de Processos (RPA), o projeto visa conceptualizar uma forma de melhorar a eficiência operacional, reduzir os erros humanos e promover a sustentabilidade. A investigação utilizou duas metodologias principais: a Action Research Approach, que permitiu uma colaboração ativa com a organização para identificar desafios e testar soluções, e a Revisão Sistemática da Literatura (RSL), que proporcionou uma base teórica sólida. O estudo identificou os principais problemas do processo atual, como ineficiências temporais, suscetibilidade a erros hu-manos e o impacto ambiental decorrente do uso excessivo de papel. Foram aplicados dois questionários aos colaboradores para avaliar as perceções sobre o sistema manual atual e as expectativas relativamente à solução automatizada proposta. Os resultados de-monstraram uma insatisfação significativa com o sistema atual e elevadas expectativas em relação à automatização. Os principais benefícios esperados incluem o aumento da precisão dos registos, a melhoria da eficiência operacional e a redução da carga administrativa. Além disso, a automatiza-ção responde às preocupações ambientais dos colaboradores ao eliminar o uso de papel, promo-vendo práticas sustentáveis. A solução proposta evidencia o potencial das tecnologias emergentes na modernização dos proces-sos de RH, aumentando a satisfação dos colaboradores. Este estudo oferece um modelo prático para a automatização de processos, sublinhando a importância da precisão, eficiência e responsabi-lidade ambiental.The digital transformation of organizational processes has become essential in modern business management, particularly in Human Resources (HR), where precision and efficiency are paramount. This study focuses on optimizing the manual and paper-based processes of attendance records and shift exchanges at Falck SCI Portugal through automation. By implementing a facial and skeletal re-cognition system combined with Robotic Process Automation (RPA), this project aims to improve operational efficiency, reduce human errors, and enhance sustainability. The research employed two methodologies: the Action Research Approach, which allowed active collaboration within the organization to identify challenges and test solutions, and a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), which provided a solid theoretical foundation. The study addressed key challenges in the current process, including time inefficiencies, human error susceptibility, and the environmental impact of paper usage. Two surveys were conducted with employees to assess perceptions of the current manual system and expectations for the proposed automated solution. Results indicated significant dissatisfaction with the current system and high expectations for automation. Key anticipated benefits include increased accuracy of records, improved operational efficiency, and reduced administrative workload. Additionally, automation aligns with employees' environmental concerns by eliminating paper usage and promoting sustainability. The proposed solution demonstrates the potential of integrating emerging technologies in HR to modernize processes and increase employee satisfaction. This study contributes to the field by pro-viding a practical model for HR process automation, highlighting the importance of precision, effici-ency, and environmental responsibility

    Workshop to compile evidence on the impacts of offshore renewable energy on fisheries and marine ecosystems (WKCOMPORE)

    This report provides a comprehensive analysis and evaluation of the current state-of-the art in available evidence and science concerning the economic, social, and ecological impacts of offshore wind farms (OWF) and floating offshore wind farms (FLOW) on fisheries in the Baltic Sea, Celtic Seas, and Greater North Sea. It describes the observed and potential economic, social, ecological and cumulative impacts of OWF and FLOW, with a focus on the scope of the existing evidence base, data and methods to assess impacts, and mitigation options to avoid or reduce unwanted impacts. Overall, the workshop to compile evidence on the impacts of offshore renewable energy on fisheries and marine ecosystems (WKCOMPORE) highlights the need for additional high-resolution data, comprehensive assessments, and stakeholder involvement to better understand and mitigate the impacts of OWF and FLOW on fisheries and marine ecosystems. Specific ‘key findings’ arising from WKCOMPORE include: Economic and Social Impacts: The assessment of economic and social impacts of OWF and FLOW requires high-resolution data on vessel positions, fisheries catch and effort, fisheries economics, and social data. However, existing data are often insufficiently detailed and not well-linked, making comprehensive impact assessments a challenge. Both ex-ante (before) and ex-post (after) methods are used to assess these impacts. Studies have shown that OWF and FLOW can negatively affect income, fishing grounds, catching opportunities, and operating costs. It was concluded there are generally more studies reporting on negative impacts than positive benefits. Context factors such as the type of OWF and FLOW, development phase, and adaptive capacity of fisheries influence the nature and magnitude of impacts. No studies were found on trade-offs between economic impacts on fisheries and OWF and FLOW. Ecological Impacts (benthos and higher trophic levels): OWF and FLOW development phases have known or predicted local impacts on commercially fished species, but no population-level assessments were identified. The requirements for such analyses are, however, described. Assessing the potential impact of offshore wind farms (OWF) (fixed and floating) on commercial species requires a detailed understanding on how related human operations and the pressures they exert cause environmental effects leading to population-level impacts across spatial and temporal scales. Combined pressures caused by OWFs, climate change and other human pressures give rise to cumulative risks, demanding integrated environmental assessments such as cumulative effects assessments (CEA) and multi-scale management strategies. · The trait-based framework (TAFOW) applied in the current study links OWF-induced state changes to population characteristics and response traits, enabled species vulnerabilities to all phases of OWF life cycle to be assessed. · A total of 34 commercial species were assessed in the North Sea, Celtic Sea, and Baltic Sea, using the TAFOW framework, which identified that sediment resuspension was likely to be the most impactful state change, with highest vulnerabilities noted in the Celtic Sea driven by changes in larval dispersal and predator-prey interactions. The present study revealed that from the 34 commercially most important fisheries resources assessed; herring, great scallop, and monkfish are the most vulnerable species across the three regions. Trophic interactions and recruitment survival of fisheries resources are particularly vulnerable to pressures that are exerted by operational OWF. It was concluded there is insufficient evidence to directly assess and quantify the effects of OWF and FLOW on the Western Baltic herring stock, although there is no direct specific evidence to suggest existing OWF sites are impacting Western Baltic herring stocks. Baltic Proper harbour porpoise will likely be directly affected during all stages of offshore renewable energy development, and especially by the introduction of underwater noise. Given the aforementioned critically low population size, even moderate impacts are to be avoided. Cumulative Impacts: WKCOMPORE evaluated existing methods and models with the potential to assess cumulative impacts of OWF and FLOW. Some models and tools were deemed suitable or had potential through further development to quantify cumulative impacts and test mitigation options. An important distinction is made between CEA models/ tools based on risk assessment framework approaches which are useful in identifying ecosystem components in areas at highest risk, from ecosystem models which can quantitatively assess the interactions between specific aspects of windfarm developments and fisheries in support of operational management advice. The models/ tools evaluated in the present study (in terms of their operational utility), classified as ecosystem models, offering the greatest utility to support operationally CEAs were; VMStools, FishSET, Community Profiling Tools. DISPLACE, OSMOSE and EwE/ Ecospace. The importance of developing case studies to demonstrate the practical application of available strategic risk-based assessment frameworks (such as BowTie, FEISA, ODEMM and SCAIRM) should be linked explicitly with the outputs of quantitative (mechanistic) ecosystem models where possible. It was concluded there is no single CEA or ecosystem model/ tool available to provide a comprehensive assessment of all component interactions at a social, economic and ecological level, between windfarm developments and fisheries. The application of a combination of CEA and ecosystem models/ tools is therefore recommended for assessment purposes. The current study concluded the need to increase focus on exploring long time-series fisheries and environmental data (>10 years) to better describe and understand the spatial/temporal dynamics of core fishing areas and climate effects in response to offshore windfarms. Hydrodynamic and Pelagic Ecological Effects: (foodweb, productivity and lower trophic levels): Most commercial species with a pelagic life stage within an ecoregion will overlap in spatial distribution with dynamic cables associated with OWF and FLOW throughout the time that the cables are in the water column (construction, operation and decommissioning). Interactions between species and cables leading to responses will relate to either direct energy emissions, physical effects and/or indirect ecological effects. Only during OWF and FLOW operations will dynamic power cables create energy emissions sufficient to represent potential stressors to commercial pelagic fisheries species. The timing of exposure to energy emissions will be determined by the operational characteristics of the cables and the length of time that species use the pelagic environment around dynamic power cables. An approach to assess the impacts of dynamic power cables on commercial fish species is proposed. Turbines create atmospheric wakes, and underwater structures modify currents and stratification. These changes affect primary production and support communities of filter feeders. Offshore wind farms (OWFs) provide stepping stones for species dispersal across unsuitable environments, benefiting both indigenous and non-indigenous species (NIS), especially benthic species with long larval pelagic phases. However, the relative influence of OWFs compared to other artificial substrates remains unclear. All NIS observations in OWFs had previously been reported from the region. Floating OWFs are likely to harbour non-indigenous species (NIS) and facilitate their spread through turbine transport between ports and wind farms. Evidence from similar structures supports this, but direct studies on floating OWFs are lacking. Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) may enhance calcifying organism growth in biofouling communities, with potential regional variations due to environmental factors. Confidence in this effect is however low, as it lacks robust empirical support. Galvanic Anode Cathodic protection (GACP) may impact biofouling communities through metal toxicity effects, but confidence is low due to limited studies. Elevated temperatures on cooling water pipes and dynamic cables in OWFs might influence biofouling community composition and growth rates. However, evidence remains inconclusive, and further studies of this pressure is required. OWF sound pollution may impact biofouling organism behaviour, with variability across species. The relationship between sound and invertebrate behaviour in OWFs is poorly understood, and its ecological significance remains uncertain. Underwater structures can directly affect ocean dynamics by causing friction and flow obstruction. This increases turbulence, reduces current speed, and weakens water stratification up to 400 meters behind the structures. Enhanced mixing induced by OWFs may increase nutrient availability in the euphotic zone, promoting local phytoplankton production in the near-field of the structures. This effect applies primarily to fixed-bottom foundations. Reduced wind speeds within atmospheric wakes decrease wind-driven currents and ocean mixing, strengthening water stratification on scales up to 100 km away from the OWFs. Large wind farms create vertical circulation patterns (upwelling and downwelling). This can increase primary production around and decrease it inside wind farm areas. The currently planned OWF installation in the North Sea can induce changes in hydrographic conditions that might alter spatial and temporal dynamics in the marine ecosystems. In a published model scenario considering the installation of 120GW in the North Sea, local ecosystem changes could reach up to 10% not only at the OWF side but on a regional scale. Mitigation measures Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP): Maritime (or Marine) Spatial Planning (MSP) provides a way to allocate areas to OWF & FLOW and other human activities, and through subordinate planning processes, instruments and supporting procedures contribute to the identification and implementation of management measures, including mitigation options. Multi-use and co-use approaches seek to enable co-existence between users and activities.
