Combining novel membrane technologies for sustainable nutrient recovery from digestate: effect of solid content

    No full text
Nutrient recovery from anaerobic digestate has gained increasing importance in recent years due to its potential to reduce resource dependency and to close nutrient cycles. The aim of this work is to evaluate the influence of a previous solid–liquid separation phase on nutrient recovery efficiency using two innovative membrane technologies, namely, gas-permeable membranes (GPM) and electrodialytic (ED) processes, applied individually or in combination. The obtained results were compared with those obtained through the centrifugation of the raw digestate and direct chemical precipitation followed by centrifugation in terms of the efficiency in the recovery of N (nitrogen) and P (phosphorous). A total of nine scenarios of digestate processing were compared. GPM technology allowed for the recovery of 65% of the N content in the raw digestate (41.5 g total solids (TS) kg−1) and 67% of N in the liquid fraction (28.0 g TS kg−1), without any significant difference between the two scenarios. However, the results revealed significant differences in the Precovery with ED from the raw digestate (15%) and the liquid fraction (34%), suggesting that phosphorous extraction can be improved by the application of a prior solid–liquid phase. The recovery of N with the GPM technology also enhanced the further recovery of total P with the ED processes. Furthermore, the combination of these technologies allowed for the recovery of N- and P-rich solutions, which were used to precipitate secondary struvite with an efficiency of up to 85%. This research provides a practical framework for sustainable nutrient management, advancing solutions for resource efficiency and environmental stewardship.B. This thesis describes a set of mathematical and statistical models applied to the understanding of COVID-19 transmission and the spatial distribution of cases. Various methods and techniques useful for epidemiological risk assessment are also presented and described. The thesis evaluates and estimates the contagion risk of COVID-19 in Mozambique using disease mapping methodology, applying ICAR, BYM, BYM2, and Leroux models based on a hierarchical Bayesian structure. These models are designed to capture spatial dependence among neighboring regions, enabling a more precise estimation of relative risk. The ICAR, BYM, BYM2, and Leroux models are tted with the R-INLA package, and model selection for estimating the relative contagion risk of COVID-19 is based on Deviance Information Criterion, Watanabe-Akaike Information Criterion, Logarithm of Marginal Pseudo-Likelihood, and graphical visualization. This work also applies tests for disease cluster detection. In conclusion, it became evident that, in comparative terms, the Southern region of Mozambique exhibited a higher relative contagion risk of COVID-19, with the City of Maputo showing particularly elevated risk

    No full text
Introduction: Parents are one of the stakeholders in evaluating schools, and families’ perspectives about schools are increasingly acknowledged as essential to educational decision-making. However, little is known about how parents’ perspectives on school happiness can be assessed. This article proposes a model for evaluating school happiness as perceived by parents/guardians. Methods: Data were obtained through questionnaires administered to 641 parents. The model was tested using structural equation modeling techniques. Results: The results identified four main components: relationships and teachers’ characteristics (People), teaching practice (Process), learning/leisure balance (Process), and green school (Place). Discussion: The article discusses the development and validation of an instrument that can be used with parents/caretakers as one of the means of assessing a school’s overall happiness level and identifying key aspects to improve a school’s level of happiness. Implications for future research on the evaluation of happy schools are also discussed. The author(s) declare that financial support was received for the research and/or publication of this article. Artificial cave of S. Paulo II (Almada)

    No full text
Excavations carried out under the auspices of the Almada City Council, between 1989 and 1991 in the churchyard of S. Paulo, within the urban area of the city of Almada, led to the identification of what remains of an artificial cave, excavated in carbonate sediments of the Miocene, of which the burial chamber and a small section of the corridor adjacent to it were completely explored. The excavations led to the collection of a copious archaeological collection, associated with around 250 burials, carried out there throughout almost the entire 3rd millennium BC, whose broad diachrony is confirmed by the radiocarbon dating carried out and by the typology of the archaeological materials, which remained to be studied. Unfortunately, the intense disturbances produced in the cave at different times, which reached its totality, since perhaps the Iron Age, and which saw notable additions in the modern and contemporary periods through the installation of a cemetery on the site, made the discussion of the results based on stratigraphy unfeasible. Based on the cross-referencing of information from the 22 radiocarbon dates carried out within the scope of this work on human left calcaneums, with the results of the study of the archaeological remains, preserved in the Museum of Almada, it was possible to conclude that the funerary use of the cave knew three distinct and well-characterized chrono-cultural phases. The first phase dates back to the end of the Late Neolithic, in the transition from the 4th to the 3rd millennium BC, being represented by only a unique deposition. The second phase of the cave’s funerary use covers the entire first half of the 3rd millennium BC, and includes an important set of vessels (cups and bowls), of excellent finish, displaying the typical fluted decoration, characteristic of the Early Chalcolithic of Estremadura. Finally, the third phase of prehistoric use of the cave, in clear continuity with the previous one, corresponds to almost the entire second half of the 3rd millennium BC, and is illustrated by the magnificent bell‑shaped ceramic productions recovered, which constitute one of the most remarkable sets published from Portuguese territory to date, both in terms of quantity and diversity and quality of productions

Edible insects are an important contribution to a more sustainable diet, as a protein source that combines environmental and nutritional benefits, and as an alternative to traditional meat. The study of children's perceptions of edible insects is particularly relevant in defining strategies to increase their acceptance in Western countries. The main aim of this study was to assess the overall acceptability and emotional response (level of disgust) regarding cookies (sweet and savory) baked with edible insect flour, by Portuguese children aged 10-12, and regarding a protein bar with insect flour, by Portuguese children aged 5-7. A sample of 47 children participated in the preparation of 4 cookie recipes (2 sweet and 2 savory) with 4,0% and 8,0% incorporation of insect flour (Tenebrio molitor species) and carrots from a local organic producer. Acceptability was assessed using hedonic scales and emotional response through a CATA (Check-all-that-apply) ballot with 11 emojis. Another two questionnaires were sent to parents to assess their children's eating behavior (CEBQ) and the reasons for sustainable consumption/acceptance of edible insects. The children had good acceptability and positive emotional responses, with the lowest preference for the sweet cookie at 8%. Parents stressed the importance of sustainability and the local and seasonal dimension, state they are familiar with edible insects, although 2/3 have never tried them, revealing they are disgusted by insects (especially visible ones), but do not restrict consumption by their children, which may indicate a future with edible insects

This research was conducted within the context of the master’s degree in educational administration and management at the Universidade Aberta, under the UNESCO Chair (UnitWin Network) "City that Educates and Transforms” and focuses on the transformative role of the Redes na Quint@-9G project in the Quinta do Alçada social housing neighbourhood in Leiria, developed by Inpulsar - Association for Community Development. The Redes na Quint@ - E9G project works with children and young people from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds, promoting social inclusion and educational success through participatory practices, artistic and sports activities, and personal development. With the theoretical approach of the UNESCO Chair "The City that Educates and Transforms" in mind, this study aims to explore how this concept materialises in a theoretical approach that views urban space as a pedagogical territory, to understand how local policies and grassroots initiatives, such as the project managed by InPulsar, transform the neighbourhood into an active space of education and social transformation. Methodologically, the research employed direct observations, interviews, and document analysis, seeking to capture the perceptions of participants and their families regarding the role of the Redes na Quint@ - E9G project in 2024. The results highlight that the Redes na Quint@ - E9G project plays a crucial role in building an inclusive educational environment, emphasising the importance of community initiatives in areas of social vulnerability. The study concludes that the project represents an innovative model of educational practice that can positively influence local development and the implementation of policies that transform cities into spaces of continuous education and inclusion.
