20 anos do euro: passado, presente e futuro
The establishment of the single currency was driven by the imperative for deeper cohesion among European Union Member States and the need for a unified monetary policy under a central European authority. This initiative significantly contributed to the tangible construction of a shared European identity. The euro currency emerged as a powerful catalyst for investment, facilitating market integration and enhancing the European Union’s presence on the global economic stage, where precision and stability are paramount.
The adoption of the euro currency has strengthened the Eurozone, equipping it with the resilience necessary to confront diverse and extreme economic disruptions that may threaten national economies. In the contemporary context, marked by accelerated technological advancement across all sectors, it is essential that Member States adapt their payment systems to the evolving paradigm of the digital economy.
This continuous transformation demands strategic action from Central Banks to support the smooth incorporation of digital solutions into the daily routines of citizens. Accordingly, this study aims to explore the path toward the adoption of digital currency by examining the historical evolution of the euro and emphasizing the institutional and structural frameworks that supported its implementation.
The analysis also explores the emergence of digital alternatives in response to the dynamic nature of modern economies, where digital transformation is both continuous and inevitable. This research is grounded in two decades of academic and institutional literature on the euro currency, highlighting its contribution to European integration and its demonstrated resilience in the face of financial and pandemic crises
Critical and inhibiting success factors in interorganizational networks: a case study
This chapter, based on a single case study, has as its main objective to analyze a real example of creating in inter-organizational network and to perceive what was done for the selection and creation of the strategic partnerships and inter-organizational network and what factors or conditions can inhibit these partnerships from having long-term success and throughout its life cycle. For this, a qualitative study based on action research and semi-structured interviews was conducted. Results show although many companies settle in inter-organizational networks to gain competitive advantage, cases of failure are still quite high. In this case, upstream partnerships have not been based on long-term trust and commitment, which has jeopardized the continuity of the network, although there is an express desire to re-establish contacts. The partnership established downstream did not show the same commitment to continue the partnership with a total termination of the relationship.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Gender affirmative action and management: a systematic literature review on how diversity and inclusion management affect gender wquity in organizations
Gender affirmative action (AA) in management remains a controversial topic among scholars, practitioners, and employees. While some individuals may support the use of AA policies as a means of increasing representation of women, others are not supportive at all, further understanding gender AA as an unacceptable violation of merit—even when targeted by it. With the aim of analyzing how scholars have approached the subject, we systematically reviewed 76 published articles (SCOPUS database), covering the extant literature on gender AA and management. Findings indicate a consensus regarding the common antecedents of attitudes towards gender AA with prior experiences with AA and diversity management (DM) (as well as general perceptions of AA).
Performance and satisfaction appear as the predominant outcomes. In addition, while investigating the differences among AA, equal employment opportunity (EEO) and diversity management (DM), scholars are mainly focused on the effectiveness of AA as a means of increasing the inclusion of minorities in general. We conclude that despite marginal studies on employees’ attitudes toward gender AA, there is a gap in the literature, particularly an absence of research on the bivalent position of meritocracy (or merit violation) as both an antecedent and outcome of attitudes towards AA, which deserves further scrutiny.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Capital budgeting practices: a survey of two industries
This research examines the capital budgeting practices used by small and medium-sized
firms (SMEs) in two Portuguese industries, footwear and metalworking, aiming at answering the
following research questions: How much knowledge do managers have about capital budgeting
practices? What are the most used practices? How much importance do they attribute to applying
them? The research was conducted through an online survey with a response rate of 14.9%. The
results document that most companies in both industries are familiar with capital budgeting practices, despite differences between the two. The footwear industry recognizes the importance of these indicators but makes little use of them, and many companies prefer using payback period (PBP).
The metalworking industry, on the other hand, makes greater use of capital budgeting practices,
with net present value being the favored indicator and PBP being used as supplementary. This
study contributes to the capital budgeting literature in two ways: first, by focusing on SMEs instead
of only large firms, and second, by exploring data from two industries rather than multiple,
heterogeneous industries. This work was financially supported by the Research Unit on Governance, Competitiveness and Public Policies (UIDB/04058/2020) + (UIDP/04058/2020), funded by national funds through FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The role of exploitative and exploratory innovation in export performance: an analysis of plastics industry SMEs
Innovation capabilities are important for firms to compete in the market. However, the literature has rarely examined how exploitative and exploratory innovation influences the export performance of small and medium-sized firms (SMEs). As exploitative and exploratory innovation plays different roles in sustaining SMEs’ competitive advantages, this article
presents an analysis of how four specific firms’ innovation capabilities (i.e. marketing, strategy, research and development and manufacturing capabilities) impact these SMEs’ export performance. Moreover, this study analysed how exploitative and exploratory innovation capabilities mediate the relationship of the four firms’ internal innovation capabilities and export performance. The results indicate that exploitative innovation positively influences SMEs’ export performance, but exploratory innovation does not.
Another interesting finding is that strategy and manufacturing capabilities are important antecedents of both exploratory and exploitative innovation.
Furthermore, the results reveal that only manufacturing capabilities have a direct impact on export performance, whereas strategy and manufacturing capabilities are the antecedents that most influence exploitative innovation and export performance.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The left and right are, 35 years later, different than they were, but similar regarding
the divisions between them. PCP and CDS/PP extended the polarization degree, PS and PSD have often become Siamese twins that the electorate rewards or punishes cyclically, but to which it provides, since 1975, its vote of confidence.
In fact, since then the PCP is at left, alone, and CDS/PP at right, waiting always that a party called to form government (PS or PSD) needs a coalition.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
