Complaint behaviour by third parties: exploring service quality, customer satisfaction and word-of-mouth in health clubs
In recent years, in the services market, we have witnessed a growing importance of concepts such as service quality, satisfaction, word-of-mouth and complaint behaviour. The proposed conceptual model aimed to examine the existing relationships among these dimensions in the context of health clubs.
Data was collected through questionnaires and analysed using structural equations modelling (SEM) to simultaneously test all the relationships in the model. Overall, the results suggest that quality is assessed through staff, programme and facilities evaluation, and that service quality is crucial for both satisfaction and word-of-mouth generation. Customers do not complain to third
parties, i.e., to external parties that are not involved, but have some influence on the service provider even when low quality is delivered or they are dissatisfied.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
An empirical examination of performance in the clothing retailing industry: a case study
This article estimates the efficiency of the 40 retail stores of a prestigious clothing company that operates in the Portuguese fast-fashion retailing market. The study compares the performance among the stores and provides insights into ways of improving performance in the retail clothing industry. A two-stage approach is used in this article. In a first stage, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) techniques are used to evaluate the performance of each store and to rank the stores. The input-oriented model was used to assess the summer and winter collections between 2010 and 2013. The results show that the total technical efficiency of the company decreases over time. Except for the year 2013, over 90% of the stores show increasing returns to scale during 88% of the period analyzed. The company faces a clear problem of productivity in its retailing operations. This deficiency seems to be intrinsic to the firm as it involves more than 60% of the stores. In a second stage, a quantile regression technique was used. This showed primarily that for the lowest quantiles of the efficiency score conditional distribution the coefficients on experience are very low, even close to zero, which suggests that the efforts taken by the stores in terms of experience are barely recognized by consumers in this fast-fashion retailing chain.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The decree 3.856 of the 22th February 1918 has been the main reference for discussions on the revision of the Separation of the Republic Law of the post Great War. The Act called Moura Pinto divides Catholics between those who think it should serve as a starting point for a revision of the Separation Law of 1911, and those who see it as just a variant of the Separation Law that must be rejected. This article covers the internal debate within the Catholic Church
on the issue and the different positions of the Portuguese bishops. In the Republican field positions differ between those who want to improve the Moura Pinto Law in a more favorable direction to the Catholic Church and those who fight for the restoration of the “intangible” Separation Law from April 20th, 1911. As we will see, the informal understanding between the Portuguese State and the Catholic hierarchy in the Republic of the post Great War does not constitute a revision of the Separation Law to consolidate relations between the Catholic Church and the Republican State.info:eu-repo/semantics/submittedVersio
A brand loyalty–risk framework in the luxury watch market
Purpose – In a society that encourages consumption, attributes such as exclusivity and social recognition are important in what is intended to be restricted to a certain exclusive segment. Luxury is something that is more desirable than necessary. This study develops and tests a model that analyses the brand loyalty–risk relationship in the luxury watch market.
Design/methodology/approach – To test the proposed research model, a sample of 306 international consumers and enthusiasts of luxury brand watches was collected. The data were analysed using structural equation modelling.
Findings – The results show that perceived quality has a negative indirect influence on brand risk and brand trust has a strong direct negative effect on brand risk. However, the findings also show that in the luxury market, the greater the affection for the brand, the greater the risk perceived by consumers.
Research limitations/implications – The study was conducted in a single market, luxury watches and the sample includes both enthusiasts and consumers of the luxury brands.
Practical implications – Managers should be aware of the double-edged role of brand affect on brand risk.
The quality of a brand and the trust in its promise decrease the risk to the consumer.
Originality/value – This pioneering study is one of the first to approach an underexplored topic as is the case of the risk associated with a brand in the context of the luxury goods market. Moreover, it relies on an international sample composed of consumers from several countries.Funding: This work has been funded by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., Project UIDB/05037/2020.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Budget participation and employee performance in real estate companies: the mediating role of budget goal commitment, trust and job satisfaction
Purpose – Recent years witnessed an exponential growth of the Portuguese real estate market. This growth has generated the need to implement effective management control tools to allow companies to improve their planning and monitoring of activities. Drawing on the agency and goal-setting theories, this paper explores the impact of companies’ participative budgeting processes on employee performance in the real estate industry.
Design/methodology/approach – For this purpose, a questionnaire was developed and a sample of 116 employees that participate in the budgeting process of real estate organizations collected, with data analyzed using structural equation modelling.
Findings – The results show that participation in the budgeting process has an impact on employees’ performance through budget goal commitment, trust and job satisfaction. However, no statistical support was found for the role of budgetary slack in this process.
Research limitations/implications – This study was conducted in a single industry and is based on
self-reported measures of employees that participate in the budgeting process of their organizations.
Practical implications – The findings highlight the need for real estate organizations to involve their staff in the elaboration of budgets, contributing to a higher level of commitment to established goals, job satisfaction, trust and performance. Real estate organizations should provide adequate working conditions, foster their employees’ autonomy and recognize their work.
Originality/value – The findings encourage real estate companies to extend the participation in the budget process to employees and, ultimately, to mitigate the probability of budget failure. This work has been funded by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., Project UIDB/05037/2020.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
A closer look at customer experience with bundle telecommunication services and its impacts on satisfaction and switching intention
The telecommunications sector faces a major challenge of high customer churn. Despite this, there is still a lack of research that explores the switching intention for telecommunication services, particularly with bundle services that currently dominate the market. This study aims to provide insight into consumer behaviour regarding bundle telecommunication services by examining the factors that impact satisfaction and switching intention, both directly and indirectly. Eighteen hypotheses were defined based on the literature, and were tested through a quantitative study with 910 bundle service customers using structural equation modelling with Smart-PLS. The results show that internet and television services have the strongest indirect impact on switching intention, mediated by overall satisfaction and loyalty. Additionally, the results indicate that switching costs and barriers do not significantly affect switching intention, and surprisingly, perceived contractual lock-in positively influences switching intention. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the customer experience with bundled telecommunications services and offers relevant insights for telecommunication managers to prevent customer loss to competitors.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
