A case study on FMEA-based improvement for managing new product development risk

    No full text
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the applicability of the failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) as an effective tool for decreasing failure risk in the early phase of the new product development (NPD), which adds to existing literature on the application of FMEA in NPD. Design/methodology/approach – Through the application of action research (AR) methodology, it was possible to develop a case study examining the use of FMEA to decrease NPD risk in an early phase of NPD execution. Findings – The importance and immediate gains of identifying NPD failures support FMEA’s usefulness for NPD risk decrease. Moreover, its user-friendliness, timeliness and cost advantages facilitate the introduction of FMEA in the early phase of NPD execution. Originality/value – FMEA is a well-known method used in manufacturing companies to identify and correct failures in products, processes and systems. This article explores the lack of practice-oriented evidence on the use of FMEA in the early phase of NPD execution and provides support to its applicability and effectiveness. This research is sponsored by FEDER funds through the program COMPETE – Programa Operacional Factores de Competitividade – and by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia –, under the project UIDB/00285/2020.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Católicos e política na crise do Liberalismo: o percurso de António Lino Neto (1873-1934)

    No full text
This thesis analyses the thought and action of a catholic leader, António Lino Neto (1873-1961), within the context of the relationships between the Portuguese State and the Catholic Church, during the crisis of liberalism, which started in the last decade of the 19th century, and ended with the establishment of the New State in the 1930s. The public intervention of António Lino Neto is framed within the political periods that the Portuguese State went through, throughout the crisis of liberalism: constitutional monarchy, First Republic, military dictatorship, and the New State. The Catholic political dynamics in Portugal are issued, taking into account the national political evolution, the relations between the Catholic Church and the State, as well as the changes of direction occurring at the pontificates of Leo XIII, Pius X, Benedict XV, and Pius XI. António Lino Neto was an institutional man, full professor of political economics since 1908, and president of the Centro Católico Português, from 1919 to 1934. In the period of the post-world war Republic, he held a leading role in the political Catholicism, which endeavoured to put in second place the question of the regime, by distinguishing the obedience towards the ruling powers from the criticism of unjust legislation. Gradually, António Lino Neto lost his relevance within the context of the emergence of an autocratic power that, under formal separation between State and Church, recognized the social value of Catholicism, and that got along with a Catholic hierarchy whose power over the ecclesiastical organization was strengthened during the period under consideration.N/

Categorising the internationalisation of SMEs with social network analysis

    No full text
This paper analyses the internationalisation of SMEs highlighting the importance of social network analysis (SNA) to display the main categories involved in SME internationalisation research. Methodologically, the paper uses a systematic review of the literature as a departure point to select the main papers on the internationalisation of SMEs and uses SNA to illustrate the main categories that have been used by researchers to identify how sectoral studies (manufacturing vs. service firms and single vs. multiple industry) have evolved and to identify the geographical origins of the papers carried out on SME internationalisation. This study is useful for researchers and academic community alike as it embeds the three main categories found (internationalisation theories, international strategy and performance) using SNA methodology.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Co-creation of new solutions through gamification: A collaborative innovation practice

    No full text
This paper aims to explore the main implications of gamification approaches to collaborative innovation and particularly to co-creation, i.e. the interaction and interchange of ideas between users, customers, suppliers and other actors in the development of new solutions. Despite the few approaches attempting to make co-creation more ludic and accessible, researchers have yet to analyse the link between gamification and co-creation in an extensive manner. In order to better understand this unexplored relationship, empirical case research studies have been conducted with multi-actors participating in a real-life co-creation project through the deployment of a gamified method and tool (ideaChef®), as well as a combination of different instruments, involving speed meetings, workshops, debriefings and interviews. Besides advancing the body of knowledge on collaborative innovation practices and conceptualizing the relationship between gamification and co-creation, this paper provides important implications for managers on how multiple actors can be engaged and coordinated in such practices through gamification. The paper's main contribution lies in the suggestion that engagement goes hand in hand with coordination, and that a combination of both will be the best strategy for co-creating new solutions through gamification.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Facing the challenges of nostalgia international markets

    No full text
Internationalization is a business strategy that normally aims at expanding the business of the firm outside its domestic market. It may also involve the creation of an integrated network of contacts and partners. The aim of this chapter involves a firm that distributes high-end wines and other alcoholic drinks to the domestic market and is seeking to expand its activities abroad. Taking into account the “nostalgia market,” with many Portuguese living throughout Europe, this chapter seeks to analyze how a Portuguese firm seeks to embrace the internationalization strategy of serving these ex-pats, through local retailers, and afterwards the possibility of serving the market abroad using the contacts so far developed. As such, the firm seeks to serve both the ex-pats and the local market alike. The chapter analyzes the Spanish, French, and German market, and it is possible to conclude that France is the market with the higher likelihood of success, economically and culturally.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Workplace innovation: a search for its determinants through a systematic literature review

    No full text
Workplace innovation (WPI) plays an important role at the institutional level, enabling firms to improve their competitive advantage. However, it remains an under-researched theme. The purpose of this paper is to extend current knowledge of the mechanisms that facilitate innovations in the workplace, identifying the main determinants that leverage WPI, based on a systematic literature review (SLR). An SLR has been carried out in order to determine the main determinants of WPI. The main topics are analyzed, and then the determinants derived inductively. WPI is depicted as a wide array of topics (38) that may be clustered around five different determinants that are transverse and intertwined. This research contributes by filling the gap regarding WPI. It combines five main determinants and provides important insights into possible avenues for the research of WPI.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Antecedents of electric vehicle purchase intention from the consumer’s perspective: a systematic literature review

    No full text
The growing demand for conventional internal combustion engine vehicles can aggravate the current energy and environmental crisis by presenting a higher dependence on fossil fuels and a higher level of greenhouse gases. The transition to electric mobility is a sustainable solution to mitigate the negative impact on the environment and energy security. In recent years, global sales of electric vehicles (EVs) have grown steadily; however, their worldwide market share is still less than 10%. The present study aims to improve and strengthen the knowledge base on consumer behavior toward EV purchases by investigating the antecedents of EV purchase intention, as well as their impact. This paper is based on a systematic literature review where 63 articles published between 1994 and 2021 were analyzed. The antecedents were classified into three main categories: consumer characteristics, EV characteristics, and EV-related policies. A summary model represents the impact information of each of the main antecedents. The descriptive results of the sample are also discussed. Finally, this study indicates directions for future research and recommendations for developing the most effective strategies and policies that will accelerate the transition to a more sustainable future.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Trade and FDI between the Czech Republic and Portugal

    No full text
With the collapse of communism, some former communist States of Eastern Europe managed to muddle through their way to a market economy and entered the European Union. This brought about the acceleration of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) among the European economies and accelerated the globalization process. Although there is plenty of research on FDI and trade among countries, the aim of this chapter is to analyze how trade between Portugal and the Czech Republic have evolved over form 2000 until 2015. The chapter seeks to complement previous studies on FDI and trade as Portugal and the Czech Republic are part of the European Union, but have had different historical, cultural, and economic paths. The main conclusion of the chapter is that trade between both countries has grown significantly. The main reason affecting trade between both countries is the economic unrest Portugal has been through since 2008.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
