Challenges of the internationalization process: a case study of a knowledge-intensive service company
This chapter analyzes the internationalization strategy of a Portuguese knowledge-based service firm.
It is based on a case study and the main objective is to discuss what internationalization theory best explains the company’s internationalization strategy. The literature reviews the main internationalization patterns—Uppsala model, born globals, born again globals, and born regionals—so that a comparison of the main characteristics of each theory is discussed and analyzed. At the end of the chapter, a table summarizes the main characteristics of the internationalization process of each model presented. The case study is based on the analysis of both primary data from the firm and data obtained from an interview obtained with the CEO.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
AI-powered sustainable tourism: aligning innovations with the sustainable development goals
This study investigates the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to foster sustainable tourism practices that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It employs the SPAR-4-SLR protocol to conduct a systematic literature review (SLR) of 76 Q1 peer-reviewed articles identified in Web of Science and Scopus to determine the contribution of AI to environmental, social and economic sustainability. Four thematic areas emerged: (1) cocreation of value and sustainability in supply chains; (2) AI, service innovation and sustainable transitions; (3) AI, experience and governance in sustainable tourism; and (4) technology, nature and emerging frontiers. Results
indicate that AI improves the sustainability process by making operations more efficient and sustainable and promotes ethical governance, inclusivity and innovation. A framework presents the interaction of AI-driven transformation, governance and ethical practices to foster a sustainable environment, contribute to SDGs 8, 9, 11, 12 and 13, and help improve SDGs 5, 7, 10, 14, 15 and 17. The study’s research agenda includes evaluating the long-term purposes of AI adoption, adoption barriers, implementation in less developed destinations and the enhancement of AI-oriented forecasting models. It provides original insights into the intersection of AI and sustainable development within tourism, providing actionable knowledge for academics, policymakers and
practitioners seeking to harness AI for advancing sustainable tourism.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
National culture, societal values, and type of economy: are they relevant to explain entrepreneurial activity?
We analyze the relationship between cultural values, societal values and the type of the economy with necessity-driven, opportunity-driven and improvement-driven entrepreneurship. We take into account GEM’s data from 56 countries. These reports are also used to characterize the three types of entrepreneurship, the societal values and the type of economy. We approach national culture through the five dimensions of Hofstede’s work on cultural values using the Values Survey Module 2013 (based on Hofstede’s work). Cultural values marginally explain necessity-driven and opportunity-driven entrepreneurship.
In turn, societal values only explain improvement-driven entrepreneurship. Finally, the type of
economy is important in explaining necessity-driven and opportunity-driven entrepreneurship, however it is of no added value in explaining improvement-driven opportunity. One needs to be cautious when drawing general conclusions as we believe that societal values are failing to capture differences among the types of entrepreneurship analyzed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Internationalization in health services: major challeges
The purpose of this chapter is to review the literature on health services internationalization and to identify the most addressed themes using the Scopus platform. Six articles were analyzed in detail and contributed to the results and discussion. The literature was found to highlight the internationalization of medical services mainly in developed countries. However, emerging countries have felt the need to adapt their services to international competitiveness. The potential of these initiatives has encouraged governments to restructure their hospital infrastructure. This growth, in the countries of origin, is a consequence of outdated, slower, and overloaded services and the difficulty of access to alternative treatments.
This study summarizes the reasons, motives, and decision-making processes that lead patients to opt for services outside their home country.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Workaholism scales: some challenges ahead
Although extensively used in the academic literature, workaholism as a concept has been explained in different ways, which has influenced the development and use of some measurement tools. As such, this article aims to address the subject through a systematic study review focusing on articles where the main objective was to develop, adapt, or analyze the psychometric properties of a workaholism scale. The main purpose is to describe the state of the art concerning workaholism measurement tools, highlighting trends and research perspectives for further research. In essence, this study may serve as a summary and starting point for scholars interested in measuring workaholism.
It was observed that the discrepancy concerning the definition of workaholism has resulted in scales that attempt to evaluate diverging conceptualizations. Moreover, each scale has been readapted when tested in different countries. For further investigations, it is important to converge the concept of workaholism and validate the scales across differing contexts, regarding the industry, culture, and country of the sample.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Anti-counterfeiting luxury management
Counterfeiting of luxury products is an illegal practice that can cause significant and reputational damage to companies, as well as erode consumer trust. Managing the fight against counterfeit luxury products is a major concern for luxury brands. The aim of this chapter is to identify and bring together some strategies from previous studies to combat the production and commercialization of counterfeit luxury products.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Analysing the fit between innovation strategies and supply chain strategies
Drawing on the concept of strategic fit, this conceptual paper seeks to clarify the relationship between innovation strategies and supply chain management strategies. This work seeks to propose a conceptual framework to help advance research in this area. A literature review was conducted as a basis for developing a unified framework which best reflects the relationship and fit between the different strategies in each area, something which has been clearly under researched from the strategic fit perspective. The findings can be used to guide the decision making of managers in the areas of innovation and supply chain. Additionally, they can serve as a reference for helping coordinate with other areas of the business, in order to ensure the correct fit between activities and strategies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A qualitative analysis of social entrepreneurship involving social innovation and intervention
Social entrepreneurship is emerging as an innovative approach for dealing with complex social and
environmental needs, and is an important lever for the development of a sustainable society. Social
entrepreneurship and related concepts have had a growing attention in the academy, giving rise to dissimilar approaches in the United States of America and in Western Europe. Despite the importance of the Third Sector in Portugal, it has been difficult to set ideal definitions for social entrepreneurship, social entrepreneur and social enterprises. By means of a qualitative study involving four Portuguese social ventures, this chapter identifies contemporary socio-cultural and economic factors that foster social innovation and intervention in Portugal, and contributes to understand the role of social entrepreneur in this context.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
