The challenging dynamics of nascent entrepreneurship
Nascent entrepreneurship has long been studied from a variety of perspectives. A major stream of work by psychologists and sociologists suggests that nascent entrepreneurs have distinctive traits and competences.
A second focus for research has been studying the environment in which nascent entrepreneurs operates.
Recently, the identification and exploitation of entrepreneurial opportunities has emerged as a third
focus. In this paper we will address the following questions: (1) what are the individual characteristics of those individuals who are attracted to becoming an entrepreneur? (2) What are the environmental factors contributing to new venture creation? (3) What are the steps in the creation process? We will attempt to answer these three questions by arguing that the central process of nascent entrepreneurship is centred on opportunity recognition, evaluation and exploitation, and influenced by contextual factors (e.g. external knowledge) and personal characteristics and competences (e.g. internal knowledge).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
A review of greenwashing and supply chain management: challenges ahead
As being environmentally responsible is a potential source of competitive advantage, incorporating genuine environmental practices across the supply chain may help firms capitalize on the growing demand for corporate accountability and consumer awareness. Therefore, it is important to understand to what extent firms are using greenwashing to mislead their stakeholders in the supply chain. The purpose of this paper is to review the existing literature regarding greenwashing in supply chain management (SCM) to shed light on the main thematic groups addressed in the literature, understand its challenges and develop a framework that highlights the key drivers that companies need to tackle to prevent greenwashing in supply chains. For this purpose, we have conducted a systematic literature review, following a three-stage method. It was possible to identify possible solutions to prevent greenwashing across four main dimensions of SCM: consumers/customers; relationships between focal firms and suppliers; certification programs and reporting assessment; and corporate leadership. We provide a framework to help firms develop their sustainable strategy and prevent greenwashing along the supply chain. This paper synthesizes the challenges that firms face when implementing a sustainable supply chain, suggests solutions to prevent greenwashing and provides future research avenues. This work was financially supported by the Research Unit on Governance, Competitiveness and Public Policies (UIDB/04058/2020), funded by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciêencia e a

Determinants of microcredit repayment in Portugal: analysis of borrowers, loans and business projects
Microcredit programs in Portugal represent a unique case for studying the microcredit repayment determinants in a developed country, as it experienced a financial hardship in 2008–2009, with economic and social consequences that led to unemployment crisis. This research examined the determinants of microcredit loan repayment based on a sample of 752 microcredit loans granted in Portugal by the National Association for the Right to Credit, adopting individual lending mechanisms and granting loans through partnerships with several credit institutions. This is the first study to ascertain the influence that a set of factors – grouped into three categories: borrowers’ individual characteristics; loan characteristics; and characteristics of business projects implemented by borrowers – has on the repayment ability of microcredit programs, in a developed country of the Eurozone. Moreover, this is the first study using an ordered logistic regression (OLR) in estimating the determinants of microcredit loan repayment. Similar to previous studies, married borrowers tend to repay loans faster as they tend to be more responsible than single borrowers. Nationality seems to be an issue as foreigners tends to default the repayment loans.
Finally, those involved in manufacturing activities perform better than those involved in service activities in repaying their loans. This clearly indicates that in developed countries special attention needs to be provided to minority groups as well as market/supply conditions, which are not normally considered in less favored economic countries.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Prejudice in a Portuguese context
This chapter discusses how the Portuguese state and society have recognized and fought prejudice. The work is interdisciplinary in nature, drawing on knowledge from the social and political sciences, legal science, and communication studies. The study is composed of four parts. The first part is the description of the context and main concepts of the research plan. The second part is a theoretical analysis of the social and political relevance of prejudice. The third part is an analysis of the Portuguese situation based on some relevant cases. Although the study focuses on the long term, special emphasis is given to contemporary society. A qualitative methodology is used to identify and characterize the behavior of the main actors: social movements, people and the state as the lawmaker. It is concluded that Portugal is generally at the forefront in the fight against prejudice through the convening of discourses on human rights, although there are different interpretations of what they mean.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Examining the effect of quantities offered by hydraulic, renewable, non-renewable sources and thermal technologies on electricity prices in the MIBEL market through an ADRL approach
The objective of this article is to analyze and empirically validate the differential effects in the daily schedules of the induced electricity prices by selling bids for three different technologies, namely hydraulic, thermal and renewable energy sources (RES), in hourly values, by daily observations for the year 2018. To achieve this objective, we employ an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model-bound testing approach The results of the ADRL-ECM method, which also reports the long-run analysis, show that (a) the renewable and thermal technologies positively and significantly affect the electricity price for Endesa and Hidroelétrica del Cantábrico generators and (b) the hydraulic technology impacts negatively the electricity price, both at a 1% level of significance. In addition, following a long-term perspective it must be highlighted that RES negatively impact the
price of electricity with a 1% level of significance for the Iberdrola, E.ON Energy, Unión Fenosa and EDP Energy of Portugal generators. However based on a short-term perspective, the results report a positive effect between the quantities traded by hydraulic and thermal technologies on the electricity price for Endesa, Iberdrola, Hidroelétrica del Cantábrico and EDP Energy of Portugal, at a 1% level of significance. The NECE-UBI, Research Unit in Business Science and Economics, sponsored by the Portuguese Foundation

The lyrical and linguistic journey of Camilo Pessanha through China
Camilo Pessanha is widely considered one of the most important poets of modern Portugal. One of the characteristics that immediately stands out in his work is his contribution to Portuguese symbolist poetry. Another of the author’s particularities that set him apart from his peers is the fact that Camilo Pessanha lived in Macau and devoted himself to the study of the Chinese language and culture and was even referred to as “the most Chinese of Western poets, before Ezra Pound” (Sá Cunha, 1999, p. 34). This intercultural devotion led him to translate Chinese poetry, in particular the translation of “The Eight Chinese Ele- gies”, a collection of poems from the Ming Dynasty compiled by Long-Fong-Kong. During the Conference on Chinese Literature, which, according to a biographical survey conducted by Daniel Pires, was given by Camilo Pessanha on March 13, 1915 and published eight days later in the Macanese newspaper O Progresso, Pessanha analyses and characterizes his own knowledge of the Chinese language, describing it as follows: “the intense spiritual pleasure that the study, however superficial, of this language and its monuments provides to those who dedicate themselves to it, for the beauty it contains, the surprises it causes and, mainly, for the vast horizons it opens to the mind about the general condition of humanity and the light it sheds on the way of being of extinct civilizations.” (Pessanha, 1992, p. 159). In this talk, we will follow Pessanha on a lyrical and linguistic journey in search of a greater understanding between two civilizations
Portugal's changing defense industry: is the triple helix model of knowledge society replacing state leadership model?
The defense industry has unique features involving national sovereignty. Despite the characteristics that led to the separation of the military and civil spheres, since the 1990s, the
number of dual-use projects has been growing. Taking into account that Portugal is a small European country, this paper analyzes the relationships within the defense industry in order to determine how university–industry–government relationships (the Triple Helix) function in this specific industry. The analysis of 145 projects of the Portuguese Ministry of Defense led to the following conclusions: first, academia was represented in more than 90% of the projects, and 40% of those projects have a dual-use application; second, there is a predominance of knowledge production, dissemination and application, for which the university’s institutional sphere is essential and third, the Triple Helix system evolves into a network of relationships that involve projects with both civil and military applications.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
This thesis seeks to demonstrate that Antero de Quental should be interpreted not merely as a central figure of 19th-century Portuguese culture, but as a globally-oriented author whose work and thought transcend national geographic and linguistic boundaries, based specifically on the body of work produced in Vila do Conde. Employing an interdisciplinary approach that combines hermeneutic analysis, comparative literary study, and museological observation, the thesis identifies global confluences both within Antero’s work and radiating from it. The originality of the study lies in its proposal to read Antero as a “glocal” author: one who is deeply rooted in the Portuguese context, yet resonant and influential across transnational spheres.
This work also examines “Casa de Antero de Quental” in Vila do Conde as a symbolic site and museological device, reflecting on how the author’s memory has been selectively activated as a tool for globalizing his oeuvre and philosophical legacy. Concrete proposals are presented for the symbolic and institutional valorization of Antero de Quental, with particular emphasis on the need to renew the museography of the Casa de Antero and to revamp the digital presence of “Centro de Estudos Anterianos.”
Here, Antero is understood as a radical thinker of the modern condition, whose relevance persists in his ability to articulate disillusionment and hope, critique and spirituality, ethics and language. His work belongs not only to Portugal’s literary past but to the shared cultural heritage of a humanity in search of meaning
