    Sami Akabawi Oral History

    Sami Akabawi, an Egyptian born in 1944, was a member of Egypt's first generation of computer specialists, working in the field in the 1960s and 1970s; he received his graduate degrees in the United Kingdom. Joining the American University in Cairo in 1983, he spent a decade in its Management Department, whose programs and personnel he covers, and he describes the development of computing at AUC in the 1980s and early 1990s. He served as Associate Vice President for Computing at AUC from 1994 to 2007, overseeing the massive expansion of the role of computing in university life and supervising Administrative Computing Services, Academic Computing Services, and University Network Services. Akabawi details his involvement with the adoption of email, internet access, networking, and internet-based telecommunications on the Old Downtown Tahrir campus, and the contributions of personnel in those areas as well as his working relationship with AUC administrators. He also outlines the adoption and implementation of university human resources, student, library, and financial systems (like SAP), as well as the Information Technology Infrastructure planning aspects of AUC's new campus in New Cairo. Akabawi rejoined the Management Department after 2007, and discusses developments there in the following decade

    Michel Mahanny Georgy worked for the American University in Cairo’s Printshop from 1984 to 2016, serving as manager from 2000. Georgy studied and worked at the Division of Public Service in the late 1970s, and was on staff at the Library with its Reference Department during the first half of the 1980s; he describes the facilities, operations, and staff of both. Georgy joined the Printshop in 1984, and provides information about the Printshop’s origins in the late 1960s. He discusses the Printshop’s affiliation with the AUC Press (including book production) and leading figures there, its function in printing AUC publications, and the incorporation of AUC Copy Center operations by the end of the 1990s. Georgy offers a detailed account of the production methods of the Printshop and Copy Center through the years, including technological shifts from manual to electronic equipment, computerization, and digital printing. Also covered are various restructurings and personnel matters over time (like outsourcing), and financial issues; in connection with these he mentions the impact of events like the move to the New Cairo campus and the 2012 Student Strike. Georgy also tells of the roles played at AUC by his wife and other relatives
