    Suspended matter from METEOR cruise M76/2 in the Benguela Upwelling System off Namibia in May 2008

    Samples were taken with a CTD/Rosette sampler to analyse suspended particulate matter (SPM) and its composition at different water depths. The water samples were filtered using a filtration system consisting of five simultaneous filtration devices, two water pumps and a waste container. Suspended material was collected on pre-weighted and pre-combusted GF/F-filters (ø 47 mm) and dried in an oven at 40°C for at least two days. The total amount of material in each sample was estimated using the volume of water filtered and final weight of dried material. Total particulate nitrogen (TPN), total carbon (TC), particulate organic carbon (POC) were quantified by elemental analysis (Thermo Flash EA 1112). Homogenized samples were weighed into silver capsules and inorganic carbon was removed by adding 1 M HCl suprapur prior to analyses. All data are given in weight%.     X-ray CT images of IODP Hole 389-M0099A

    Collection of X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) cropped orthogonal images along the core section splitting axis from the above given hole of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 389 (Hawaiian Drowned Reefs). The offshore phase of this expedition took place between 2023-08-31 and 2023-10-31 onboard multipurpose vessel MMA Valour sailing from and to Barbers Point Harbor, Hawai'i, USA, followed by the onshore phase from 2025-02-06 to 2025-02-26 at the Bremen Core Repository (BCR) hosted at MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, University of Bremen. X-ray CT imaging was conducted at the British Geological Survey Core Scanning Facility in Keyworth (UK) prior to the onshore phase in Bremen. The cores were scanned using a GEOTEK Rotating XCT (RXCT) core scanner and GEOTEK Reconstructor software for data and image processing.     Color reflectance spectrophotometry and colorimetry data from the above given hole of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 389 (Hawaiian Drowned Reefs). The data where obtained during the onshore phase of expedition 389 which took place between 2025-02-06 to 2025-02-26 at the Bremen Core Repository (BCR) hosted at MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, University of Bremen. After longitudinal splitting of the core sections, each archive half was scanned by a handheld Konica Minolta spectrophotometer (Model CM-2600d), recording data at approximately 2-cm sampling interval. Interval spacing was adjusted appropriately depending on the nature of the core (i.e., the presence of rubble, vugs, and fractures) and commented on in the data report. Measurements were taken in the most visibly homogeneous areas at each depth downcore to obtain as pure a color reflectance signal as possible. The obtained data is represented in the L*a*b* color coordinate system, where L* is a total reflectance index ranging 0%–100%, a* is green (0) chromaticity, and b* is blue (0) chromaticity. Furthermore, the analyses give Munsell color values , and intensity values for 31 contiguous 10 nm wide bands across the 360–740 nm interval of the light spectrum with a reflectance range of 0%–175% and a resolution of 0.01%.     Core overview images of IODP Hole 389-M0110B

    Collection of core overview image reports from the above given hole of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 389 (Hawaiian Drowned Reefs). The offshore phase of this expedition took place between 2023-08-31 and 2023-10-31 onboard multipurpose vessel MMA Valour sailing from and to Barbers Point Harbor, Hawai'i, USA, followed by the onshore phase from 2025-02-06 to 2025-02-26 at the Bremen Core Repository (BCR) hosted at MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, University of Bremen. Core overview images reports for each core are automatically produced by the mDIS (mobile Drilling Information System) using the archive half line scan image of available sections once uploaded to the systems' file management. Line scan images were obtained during the onshore phase from the cleaned fresh cut surfaces directly after longitudinal splitting of core sections into work and archive halves. For production of core overview reports the curated cropped images of the respective archive halves were used. File naming follows standard IODP file naming convention: Exp-SiteHole-CoreCoretype. For example, a file 389-M0109A-06R.pdf identifies the report for core 6R (R indicating rotary coring method), from Hole M0109A from Expedition 389.     The dataset contains temperature, salinity, oxygen saturation, chlorophyll a and turbidity data from the Helgoland MarGate underwater observatory from the year 2024 in a temporal resolution of 1 hour. The cabled observatory is located in 10m water depth and comprises single or multiple sensors for a specific parameter (see https://www.awi.de/en/science/biosciences/shelf-sea-system-ecology/main-research-focus/cosyna/underwater-node-helgoland.html).     Collection of visual core description (VCD) sheets (hand drawn originals) and digital lithostratigraphic logs from the above given hole of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 389 (Hawaiian Drowned Reefs). VCD was performed on unsampled archive halves of split core sections directly after line scan imaging, during the onshore phase of expedition 389, which took place between 2025-02-06 to 2025-02-26 at the Bremen Core Repository (BCR) hosted at MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, University of Bremen. The lithology of each core section is represented on the hand drawn VCDs by graphic patterns next to the line scan image of the archive-half core section. Further, a wide variety of features that characterize the sediment are indicated in additional columns. The information from the hand-drawn VCD sheets was then transferred into the mobile Drilling Information System database, from where it could be accessed semi-automated to produce digital lithologic columns using Strater 5 software (by Golden Software). The dataset is accompanied by a composite plot of core images acquired by optical line scanning. For the original images see corresponding data set 'Line scan images of IODP Hole 389-M00##'.
