CO2 degassing from karstic springs in Southern Germany
This study examines characteristics of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and partial pressures of CO2 characteristics (pCO2) in the source springs and headwaters of four karstic watersheds, via dissolved inorganic carbon concentration and stable carbon isotope measurements. All four spring sources are located in Southern Germany and were measured for water chemistry and stable isotopes with nearby headwater stream points, which were located up to 100 m downstream of the discharge points. X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) core scanning from sediment core of Lake Alchichica in Mexico
The geochemical data were measured from a 57-cm-long sediment core retrieved from Lake Alchichica (19° 24' 38 N, 97° 24' 14 W, 2322 masl) at a water depth of ~ 60 m using a Uwitec® coring device equipped with a 9-cm coring tube. Geochemical compositions of the sediment core were analyzed using an ITRAX X-ray fluorescence core scanner (CS-XRF) at the INRS Centre Eau Terre Environnement in Canada. The analysis produced the ratio of Compton (incoherent) to Rayleigh (coherent) scattering (Inc/Coh), which can serve as an indicator of sediment organic content. The scans were measured at 2 mm intervals using 20 kV with a current of 10 mA and a dwell time of 20 seconds. To reduce matrix effects and address the closed-sum issue, elemental intensities (measured in counts per second) were transformed using the centered log-ratio (clr) method. For better visualization, all elemental data were subjected to min-max normalization
Inventory of Glacial Lakes in High Mountain Asia for the Years 2016 and 2022
We have developed an updated and comprehensive inventory of glacial lakes across High Mountain Asia (HMA) for the year 2022, identifying a total of 31,698 glacial lakes. This inventory was created by integrating multi-source remote sensing datasets, including Landsat-8, Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and the Copernicus DEM. We achieved a high detection accuracy of 96% for smaller glacial lakes (20,000–100,000 m²) and successfully detected all larger glacial lakes with high delineation accuracy. Additionally, we generated median lake boundaries for two epochs (2016 and 2022) by using median composites of all available imagery for each period to minimize the influence of seasonal variations in lake extents. This database can serve as a valuable resource for monitoring GLOFs, downstream risk assessment, and water resource management in the region
