    Pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs, and 14C ages of Thor profile from the Gurvan Bogd, Gobi Altai, Mongolia

    The dataset represent pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs counting data as well as radiocarbon datings of the Thor profile from the Gurvan Bogd, Gobi Altai, Mongolia. The profile Thor was collected in 2007 by Frank Schlütz. A metal box was cut from the wall of a fresh peat outcrop in a water fed depression near a seasonal runlet and sampled in the laboratory. Laboratory processing took place in the Dep. Palynology and Climate Dynamics, Georg-August-University of Göttingen in 2008 by Lyudmila Shumilovskikh. For each palynological sample, one millilitre of material was treated with hydrochloric acid, potassium hydroxide, hydrofluoric acid, acetolysis mixture, microsieved (6 μm) and stored in glycerol. Before acid, Lycopodium spores were added to calculate pollen influx. Standard microscopical magnification was 400×, for ambiguous objects 1000x with oil immersion. Identification and morphological pollen types follow Beug (2004) and type collections with taxonomical adaption to the flora of the Gobi Altai (Grubov, 2001). Non-pollen palynomorphs (NPP) follow Pals et al. (1980), van Geel et al. (1981) and Müller (1970). New NPP types were described and have been uploaded to the Non-Pollen Palynomorphs Image Database (NPP ID, http://nonpollenpalynomorphs.tsu.ru/). In addition, pieces of burnt plant fragments (Schlütz & Lehmkuhl, 2009; 'charcoal') of > 10 µm were counted. Higher taxa do not include separated lower groups; for instance Poaceae does not include Poaceae > 37 µm. A total of 300 to 350 terrestrial pollen grains were identified for each sample in the Thor profile

    Carbon isotope values of individual amino acids were measured. Clam specimens were collected at USGS Sites 2.1 and processed following Stewart et al. (2013; doi:10.3354/meps10503). Amino acids were hydrolyzed from clam muscle tissue, derivatized, and isolated following Vokhshoori et al. (2013; doi:10.3354/meps10746). The measurement of the carbon isotope values of individual amino acids were conducted following Vokhshoori et al., 2013 and Vokhshoori and McCarthy, 2013 (doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0098087), respectively

    Data in supplement for a research project exploring the potential effects of trait plasticity and maternal effects on a rare (Lupinus nipomensis) and common (Lupinus bicolor) annual lupine species. The seeds were collected by hand between 2016-12-01 and 2017-02-28 near UC Santa Barbara Greenhouses. Plants were grown in an initial cohort experiencing both well-watered and drought dry-down conditions at an average temperature of 21.1°C – 22.2°C. Seeds were then harvested to be grown in a F1 generation to test for the relative effect of maternal effect and trait plasticity. The study took place in greenhouses at the University of California Santa Barbara from 2016 - 2017. Different measures include vegetative traits, phenological events and reproductive traits

    This is a dataset of continuous dissolved gas measurements made by a laser spectroscopy based gas analyzers coupled to a gas extraction module, and plumbed directly into the seawater supply line of the RV Sally Ride. This data was collected as part of the PUPCYCLE II cruise, which took place in the California Upwelling system (CalUS) (38-44°N, and 121-126°W from May 28, 2023 to June 12, 2023). Underway measurements were calibrated using discrete dissolved gas samples (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.987238). The goal of the study was to understand controls on the biogeochemical cycling of gases in the CalUS and quantify sea-air fluxes of the gases, particularly the understudied gas of CH4 and N2O. In addition to the dissolved gas measurements, there is also measurements of stable carbon isotopes (del13C) of methane and carbon dioxide, temperature, oxygen, fluorescence and salinity

    Underway temperature and salinity data was collected along the cruise track with two autonomous measurement systems. Usually, the systems are changed after 6 hours. While temperature is taken at the water inlet in about 6.5 m depth, salinity is estimated within the interior measurement container from conductivity and interior temperature. No temperature validation was performed. Salinity was validated with discrete water samples taken close to the seawater inlet. For details to all processing steps see Data Processing Report

    Relative abundance of pollen from MIS 11 from IODP Site 339-U1385, SW Iberian margin

    Pollen-based vegetation reconstruction from IODP Site 339-U1385, drilled on the SW Iberian margin during IODP Expedition 339 (37°34.285′ N, 10°7.562′ W; 2578 m water depth). The studied interval, between ~435 and 363 ka, encompasses Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 11 and provides a high-resolution record of vegetation and terrestrial climate variability in southwestern Europe. The dataset contains percentages of all identified pollen and spore morphotypes, as well as the main ecological groups: Mediterranean forest (including Mediterranean sclerophylls and all temperate trees and shrubs, excluding Pinus, Cedrus and Cupressaceae), Mediterranean taxa s.s. (or sclerophylls), and semi-desert plants. Pollen analysis: Holes E and D of Site 339-U1385 were sampled every 4 cm between 50.27 and 56.01 crmcd, with increased resolution (2 cm) between 54.50 and 56.01 crmcd during interglacial MIS 11c. Processing followed the standard protocol for marine samples: coarse sieving (150 µm mesh), sequential treatments with cold HCl (10-50 %) and cold HF (45-70 %) to remove carbonates and silicates, a final cold HCl (25 %) treatment to eliminate fluorosilicates, and micro-sieving at 10 µm. Residues were mounted unstained in glycerol. Pollen analysis of 164 samples was carried out using a Nikon light microscope at ×500 and ×1000 (oil immersion) magnification

    Raw data acquired by position sensors on board RV Elisabeth Mann Borgese during expedition EMB345 were processed to receive a validated master track which can be used as reference of further expedition data. During EMB345 data from the motion reference unit exail Phins Gen.3, the Trimble SPS356 GPS receiver, the Furuno GP-170 and the Furuno GP-150 GPS receiver were used to calculate the mastertrack. Data were downloaded from DAVIS SHIP data base (https://dship.bsh.de) with a resolution of 1 sec. Processing and evaluation of the data is outlined in the data processing report. Processed data are provided as a master track with 1 sec resolution derived from the position sensors' data selected by priority and a generalized track with a reduced set of the most significant positions of the master track
