Climate change has caused considerable problems for forestry and wood industries. Extreme weather events, soaring temperatures and extended dry periods are resulting in increased quantities of damaged wood. Accordingly, more and more forestry operations and forest owners have to find and implement alternative ways to deal with the issue of salvage wood, including the use of temporary storage, especially for the wet storage of roundwood. By implementing these solutions, economic and ecological consequential damage in forestry can be counteracted.Wet storage operators currently have no access to updated Austrian guidelines and recommendations. Therefore, in this thesis, recommendations for all processes of a wet storage site (site search, planning, approval, construction, storage, operation and removal) and the associated costs are elaborated on in detail. These findings are based on a theoretical review of existing national and international knowledge and experience, as well as on practical information from experts along the wood value chain, and case studies. Generalised steps and instructions for efficient damaged wood management are described, with special consideration being given to wet storage systems. In addition, new concepts and strategies for the future handling of wet storage systems, including the obtaining of legal permits for construction as well as management, are considered. The planning phase is additionally supported with two developed models (storage layout table and cost calculation tool). This is intended to ensure the ideal planning and management of a wet storage facility within the framework of an innovative strategy for salvage wood.verfasst von Johannes KircherMasterarbeit Universität für Bodenkultur Wien 2023Mit englischer Zusammenfassun
Experimental characterization and modelling of flow non-uniformities in small chromatography columns
Short chromatography columns are essential tools for early development of purification processes. Very small columns are difficult to pack, especially with rigid chromatography media. We evaluated the performance of commercial and self-packed columns ranging from 0.2 to 10.0 mL by pulse response, breakthrough curves and linear gradient elution. Self-packed columns were intentionally packed in a way to exhibit flow nonuniformities and lower performance. For the 0.2 mL columns, the response curves were completely dominated by extra-column dispersion effects and no differences regarding packing quality could be assessed. With increasing column size, differences became progressively better detectable. For 0.5- and 1.0-mL columns, pulse response experiments were still rather insensitive but BTCs indicated flow non-uniformities by a shallow increase in front of the steep breakthrough. For the columns with flow nonuniformities an analysis considering extra-column dispersion shows that the inherent fronting of the peak is counterbalanced by an exponential wash-out of the system yielding an apparent asymmetry of 1 and erroneously indicating a perfectly packed column. For larger columns, lower packing quality was equally well detectable by response peaks with significant fronting and pronounced shallow early section of the BTC. Performance and resolution of two model proteins with linear gradient elution was almost independent of the packing quality but dropped significantly with smaller columns. Overall, the packing quality of the commercial columns was excellent for all column sizes. The column behaviour of the self-packed columns could be well described by previously established models comprising parabolic velocity profiles.submitted by David ScheichMasterarbeit Universität für Bodenkultur Wien 2023Mit deutscher Zusammenfassun

Air temperature is rising, climate change is already happening – this is scientific consensus. But what does temperature development beneath ground surface look like? Therefore, this work analyses the longest measurement series of soil temperature worldwide. The data from Vienna, measured from 1878 on in up to 2m depth should provide information about vertical temperature development of the ground and its evolution over the last 140 years. It shows an increasing trend similar to air temperature, at a temperature level about 1°C higher in annual means. This rise in temperature can be measured at least down to a depth of 2m and shows an amount of around 1,8°C on average over the last thirty years compared to preindustrial times. Since 1980, the trend has experienced a significant increase, between the period 1961-1990 and the period 1991-2020 the soil has warmed by around 1°C. In addition, there is a shift in seasons, which results in a reduction of the cold time of the year. The warmest month of the year in average is one month later than it was before 1900 and the coldest month of the year is now one month earlier. Both show a significant rise in temperature. Due to the phase shift in the soil, a longer-lasting increase of soil temperature than air temperature after a reduction of the latter can be assumed.verfasst von Anna KaiblingerMasterarbeit Universität für Bodenkultur Wien 2023Mit englischer Zusammenfassun
Proceeding climate change, the growing importance of nature conservation and debates about industrialized agriculture bring agroforestry (AF) systems into focus as a possible solution of these problems. However, the lack of know-how of farmers in planning and management of these systems still limits their usage. Meanwhile, increasing demands on the provided ecosystem services are stated by different parties. Expectation is put upon the largest land user in Germany, agriculture and forestry, to adapt their land use in order to preserve and restore the ecosystem services. Participative planning is useful to consider all these different expectation in planning. Therefore, the aim is to design a participatory planning process for AF systems and to test it applied on a farm. The focus was on an easy planning process that uses a lot of knowledge already available on the farm. In workshops, the key stakeholders gathered information regarding the farm, the natural conditions of the farmland and identified other stakeholders that might be affected by planning an AF system. In addition, goals for a potential AF system were identified field specific. The sketched proposals for AF elements were then evaluated from the perspective of the other stakeholders. Afterward, possible issues about AF elements were the starting point for modifications, to create a higher level of acceptance for the AF elements. At the end of the planning process, refined proposals for the introduction of AF systems on the Karolinenhof were formulated, stating their advantages and disadvantages. The broad-based analysis of the farm is able to identify starting points for AF systems on it and define goals for them. Therefore, it is aimed primarily at farms that have few distinct plans for the purpose and design of AF systems.verfasst von Bernard MichelMasterarbeit Universität für Bodenkultur Wien 2023Mit englischer Zusammenfassun
Determination of root decomposition rate from minirhizotron images
Knowledge of root senescence is fundamental for a comprehensive understanding of carbon and nutrient cycling in soil. Minirhizotrons have been used to study root dynamics because it is a nondestructive system in the field, allowing observation over time and depth. Usually, minirhizotron images are used to observe root growth. In this study, we tried to estimate root decay after harvest using an automated image analysis approach applying machine learning (convolutional neural networks). The aim was to estimate the decay rate of wheat roots after harvest, including the effects of soil temperature and moisture. The data was gathered from the minirhizotron facility of the Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany. Images were taken biweekly after harvest (July) from September 2022 to January 2023. The segmentation process was done in RootPainter and the root length was obtained in RhizoVision Explorer. Thus, for each image position, we followed the root decay over time. Root decay was modelled through linear and exponential degradation kinetics which considered the effects of temperature and matric potential. In addition, soil basal respiration was determined for different soil depths and compared with root degradation. We concluded that it is possible to measure root length density after harvest from minirhizotron images using neural networks. The root decay was mostly affected by decreasing soil temperatures, reducing the rate during winter. Therefore, the choice of the decay model became unimportant in the prediction. Basal respiration was used as an indicator of soil microbial activity. We observed no relationship between basal respiration and depth, but the depths with higher basal respiration were also those with the higher root decay rate. More studies should be done integrating other factors that affect root degradation such as soil and root parameters.submitted by Sofia FoladoriMasterarbeit Universität für Bodenkultur Wien 2023Mit deutscher Zusammenfassun

Soybean research for sustainable development : Abstracts of the World Soybean Research Conference 11 (WSRC 11), 18-23 June 2023, Vienna, Austria
At present, the world community is facing substantial changes of different nature which have a considerable impact on the global food and nutrition situation: Man‐made climate change is becoming clearly visible and is negatively affecting food security, while disruptions and changes in global supply chains also contribute to increased food insecurity as well as economic instability. The soybean stands in the middle of these processes, as it is and continues to be the most important protein and oilseed crop of the world, which is utilized for the production of livestock feeds, numerous human food components, and non‐food products. Due to a global rise in the consumption of meat and dairy products during previous decades, the massive expansion of soybean production was partly associated with increased greenhouse gas emission, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity. Because of this, present soybean production is experiencing harsh criticism from science and civil society.
Therefore, the timely motto of the World Soybean Research Conference 11 is “Soybean research for sustainable development”. As research and development are the major engine behind any progress in crop production, agricultural research is urgently needed to mitigate the negative effects of climate change and to minimize the impact of soybean on the environment towards a fully sustainable soybean production in the near future. This includes a reduction of production inputs through improvement of agronomic and genetic input efficiency, new pathways in livestock feed uses, and finally an enhanced direct utilization of soybeans in human foods. The five major themes of the conference are (i.) breeding‐eneticsgenomics‐
biotechnology, (ii.) food‐feed‐nutrition, (iii.) agronomy‐physiology‐agrotechnology, (iv.) weeds‐diseases‐pests, and (v.) business‐policy‐market issues, which will be elaborated in over 30 scientific parallel sessions, 4 plenaries and 2 poster sessions. The versatility of approaches to sustainable soybean production is well reflected by miscellaneous contributions from fields such as genetic diversity, genomics‐assisted soybean breeding, genome editing, stress and climate change mitigation, novel developments in soy‐foods and feeds including chemistry, nutrition and health, agro‐technology and data‐driven crop and soil management, organic soybean production, seed science, the soybean rhizosphere, progress in the management of weeds, diseases and pests, as well as policy and environmental sciences.
The WSRC 11 organizers have received over 500 scientific contributions, and the most outstanding scientists from all major soybean producing countries including China, the United States, Argentina, Canada, Brazil, India, Ukraine, France, Serbia, Japan and South Korea will
share and discuss their latest results. In addition, reports from all world regions with significant soybean production will provide unique insights into specific issues of soybean cropping and utilization. Dedicated workshops have been organized to address specific needs such as soybeans for Africa, or soybean breeding for organic farming. In the time since the last World Soybean Research Conference, huge progress has been achieved in the utilization of genomic information, in data‐driven agronomic decision‐making as well as in various other aspects of soybean biology including the interaction with stress factors. Thus, the conference aims at fostering the exchange of new knowledge and stimulating collaborative research among the world scientific community. Apart from oral presentations, poster sessions and an industry exhibition provide unique opportunities for personal interaction between the conference participants. Posters in particular are covering a very wide range of specific topics and research questions, and therefore poster sessions are a major source of exchange and scientific inspiration.
I am grateful to all conference chairpersons, members of the international scientific committee, members of the WSRC continuing committee and to all scientific contributors for their excellent inputs to compile an outstanding program, which delivers both a comprehensive overview as well as numerous specific highlights and new landmarks of soybean research. I also thank all sponsors, industry representatives and exhibitors for their
valuable support of this conference. And most particularly, I acknowledge the help of the two WSRC organizing teams of the earlier conferences to be held in Savannah, GA, United States and Novi Sad, Serbia which had to be cancelled due to natural disasters; both teams were generously sharing their experience and preparation work they had carried out before.
During the historical Vienna World Exposition of 1873, soybean made its first legendary appearance on the international stage. In 2023 ‐ 150 years later ‐ the soybean community is back in Vienna. I wish all participants of the World Soybean Research Conference 11 many inspiring encounters and helpful insights for meeting the challenges ahead of us.editors: Johann Vollmann, Marjana Vasiljević, Leopold Rittler, Jegor Miladinović, Donal Murphy‐BokernArchivierung/Langzeitarchivierung gewährleistet AT-OeNB pdage
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has been omnipresent in Austria since February 2020. Already after the first infections, a rapid spread of the disease in the population followed. To counteract this, approximately 189 million tests were performed across Austria by June 2022. A large part of the Austrian population shifted work to the home office or had to go on short-time work, and schools were temporarily closed. This pandemic response strategy suggests that the waste management industry had to be strongly affected by the pandemic. This raises the following question, "What changes does the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic bring with respect to waste management in Austria?"This paper attempted to answer the research question by reviewing the literature, contacting two experts, and conducting an experiment. The following conclusion could be drawn:The results show that the total amount of waste generated in the federal states did not increase but shifted. A closer look at the individual fractions shows that the waste generated by households has increased due to home office use, school closures and short-time work in individual fractions, while there has been a reduction in the amount of waste generated in theindustrial and manufacturing sector. If, as before, industry and commerce are no longer restricted, it can be assumed that total residual waste will increase when the pandemic measures are lifted. Here, an increase in the household as well as industrial and production sectors would be expected. In this master's thesis, it was assumed that the increase in household waste generation could also have resulted from the disposal of the rapid antigen tests. This assumption was verified by the data of waste quantity of various federal states. The result of this master thesis indicates that household waste increased during the pandemic, probably also due to the disposal of the government-mandated tests.verfasst von Larissa NaglMasterarbeit Universität für Bodenkultur Wien 2023Mit englischer Zusammenfassun
