    The Pakistani general election 2024

    No full text
This report critically examines Pakistan's 2024 general elections, focusing on political repression, economic instability, and the role of digital disruptions. The election was marked by controversy as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) faced severe restrictions, although the PTI-backed independent candidates secured significant number of parliamentary seats. Despite allegations of manipulation, a coalition government led by the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) emerged. The report analyzes the economic concerns, including inflation, income inequality, and structural privileges that exacerbate social unrest. It also investigates the role of the military establishment in influencing political outcomes and the censorship of digital spaces to control electoral narratives. The findings highlight the ongoing struggle to establish a stable democracy in Pakistan, where economic challenges and political suppression continue to shape voter behavior and governance structures

In a time of multiple global developments and challenges, there is an acknowledged need for education for sustainable development (ESD) worldwide. At school, pupils should be supported in all subjects to acquire competences that enable them to cope with the challenges provoked by the complexity of a constantly changing world. In this context, the value of physical education (PE) as an enabler of sustainable development has also been recognized. For ESD to be integrated in PE in schools, it is essential to implement it in higher education in the study courses of future PE teachers. These teachers must be aware of their own role as agents of change and the contribution their own field and subject can make. The following article will argue that ESD can be implemented in physical education teacher education (PETE) at higher education level by giving an example of how and to what extent this might be done. It will review a teaching format in the master’s study course in PETE at the University of Potsdam, in which ESD is embedded. The concept of the project seminar was developed within the teaching project Research fields in sports education and didactics – the body in the context of digitalisation and digitality, which is one of 12 projects in the UP Network for Sustainable Teacher Education, funded by the DAAD programme Lehramt. International (2021–24). The project seminar focuses especially on the thematic complex of (changing) corporeality in the context of digitality and digitalization as an excerpt of human encounters with the world

One of the pivotal questions in cognitive science concerns the nature of conceptual knowledge. Traditional theories explain it partially or even entirely independently from the body and external environment. In contrast, embodied theories of cognition argue that conceptual knowledge develops through dynamic interactions of an organism with the physical world, highlighting the role of modal systems in concept acquisition, storage, and retrieval. The embodied view on cognition is supported by the grounding of temporal concepts in spatial modality: Words related to the past are associated with the left, while words related to the future with the right space – a phenomenon called horizontal spatial-temporal mapping in this thesis. While research demonstrates the widespread existence of this mapping, questions remain regarding its automaticity and regularity across different concepts and linguistic experiences. This thesis presents three novel studies that aim to address these questions. First, analyses revealed spatial biases in uncontrolled response parameters such as mouse trajectories and initial line intersections, which may reflect early stages of conceptual processing and suggest the automaticity of spatial-temporal mapping. Second, the regularity of horizontal spatial-temporal mapping was demonstrated across languages with similar left-to-right reading habits (Russian, German, and English) and different temporal concepts (hours, days, and months) within a single language (Russian). Overall, this research contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the role of attention in processing temporal concepts, providing further support for embodied theories of cognition.

This thesis explores the intersection of differential geometry, geometric analysis, and general relativity, focusing on geometric structures and their physical implications. The primary objective is to deepen the understanding of quasi-local energy definitions, particularly the Hawking energy, and to develop geometric methods that illuminate fundamental problems in mathematical relativity. In the first part, we analyze local foliations of prescribed mean curvature surfaces, such as spacetime constant mean curvature (STCMC) and constant expansion (CE) surfaces. These surfaces are instrumental in characterizing the center of mass in asymptotically flat spacetimes. Using a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction framework, we construct local foliations around a point, prove their uniqueness, and establish conditions for their nonexistence. The second part focuses on one of the central challenges in the field: identifying a viable quasi-local energy. We investigate the Hawking energy and demonstrate that when evaluated on specific critical surfaces, referred to as "Hawking surfaces", it satisfies key physical properties, including positivity, correct asymptotics, monotonicity, and rigidity, provided certain technical conditions are met. These results confirm the Hawking energy's consistency with fundamental physical principles and address long-standing ambiguities and criticisms. Additionally, we study foliations by Hawking surfaces in both local and large-scale settings. In both cases, we employ a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction to establish the existence and uniqueness of the foliations. For large-scale foliations, we analyze the center of the foliations and their physical significance. In the local setting, we compare the foliation's behavior to the small sphere limit along a null cone, resolving apparent discrepancies and refining the physical interpretation. Through these results, we aim to highlight the Hawking energy's practical and theoretical importance as a quasi-local energy , redeeming its reputation and reinforcing its relevance in gravitational physics.

Inclusive learning environments require consideration of individual learning prerequisites. The Potsdam Inclusive Teaching Model (PIMODE) outlines resources that support individualized teaching. However, there is limited understanding of which resources are crucial for digitally enhanced individualization. This study analyzes data from 145 teachers in Germany regarding the significance of teacher- and school-related resources for self-reported digitally enhanced individualization in the classroom. Path model analyses indicate that digital-related competence self-evaluations are particularly associated with self-evaluated learner orientation. Findings highlight the importance of specific self-evaluations of competencies to be integrated into PIMODE as resources for designing digitally enhanced individualized teaching

Inclusive learning in primary schools: Changes in children's attitudes towards inclusive education through the "SEGEL" intervention

    No full text
In Germany, children with and without special educational needs are increasingly taught together in the same class. The success of such inclusive education depends, among other factors, on the attitudes of all participants. Therefore positive attitudes are particularly important, making interventions aimed at improving attitudes more and more relevant. In the federal state of Brandenburg, the intervention Soziale Entwicklung beim gemeinsamen Lernen (SEGEL; Social Development in Inclusive Education) aims to promote not only personal and social competencies but also students’ attitudes towards inclusive classrooms. To date, only little empirical research has been conducted on children's attitudes towards inclusion in schools and especially regarding inclusive learning settings. Therefore this study investigates how students perceive inclusive education – specifically various types of differentiated instruction – and how these attitudes develop through their participation in the “SEGEL“ intervention. A total of N = 283 fourth- and fifth-graders took part in two questionnaire surveys before and after the intervention. Results indicate that, at both measurement points, students held significantly more negative attitudes towards instructional differentiation for children with behavioral difficulties than for children with learning difficulties. Prior to and following the intervention, students' attitudes did not differ depending on whether they (do not) perceive themselves as children with learning or behavioural difficulties. Regarding the intervention’s goal of improving these attitudes, significantly more positive, but still predominantly negative, attitudes towards differentiation for children with behavioral difficulties were found after the intervention. In contrast, students’ consistently positive attitudes towards differentiated instruction for children with learning difficulties remained almost unchanged. These findings are consistent with the current state of research. Future studies should investigate the underlying causes of these attitudes
