Adolescence is a particularly challenging phase of life in which adolescents have to master complex developmental tasks such as building close peer relationships or personality development (Gniewosz & Titzmann, 2018). In addition, successful social participation is considered a central goal inclusion (Prengel, 2013), as it has a significant influence on both the learning process and healthy psychosocial development (Böttinger, 2021; Juvonen et al., 2019). Therefore, opportunities must be created for students with special educational needs (SEN) to socialise with peers, make friends and participate in the classroom community (Monchy et al., 2004). In an inclusive context, social interactions, acceptance by peers, friendships and self-perception of one's own social participation are considered the four central facets of social participation (Bossaert et al., 2013; Koster et al., 2009). Cross-group friendships between students with and without SEN are a special form of friendship. They have the particular potential to reduce prejudice and promote cooperation (Allport, 1954; Juvonen et al., 2019). The existing empirical findings on the social participation of students currently stem mainly from primary school, while the social participation of adolescents with SEN and the relationships between the facets have not yet been investigated satisfactorily. Furthermore, the influence of social participation on personality development in an inclusive context has not yet been researched.
The aim of this dissertation was, therefore, to analyse the social participation of adolescents with SEN and its influence on personality development. This cumulative dissertation is based on three empirical studies. At the time of submission, studies 2 and 3 had been published in specialist journals. Study 1 was in peer review process. All three studies are based on data collected as part of the 'Evaluation Gemeinsames Lernen und Schulzentren im Bundesland Brandenburg' (Lenkeit et al., 2023). The data relates to N = 927 students in grade 6 and 7.
In study 1, various facets of adolescents' social participation were investigated and relationships between the facets were examined in a mediation model. Compared to their peers, adolescents with SEN received significantly fewer peer nominations, had fewer friendships and felt less integrated into the class. In addition, the assumed mediation model was confirmed: The relationship between SEN and perceived social participation was mediated by peer nominations and reciprocal friendships.
In study 2, various facets of social participation and their associations were again analysed. The focus was on perceived class climate and bullying experiences. Adolescents with SEN social-emotional development (SED) rated the classroom climate significantly lower, but did not report bullying experiences more frequently than peers without SEN. There were significant associations between peer nominations, reciprocal, and cross-group friendships with perceived classroom climate and bullying experiences. Significant composition effects were also observed: In classes with a higher level of peer nominations, reciprocal, and cross-group friendships, adolescents rated the classroom climate more positively.
In the longitudinal study 3, the influence of social participation on personality development was investigated based on the dynamic personality-relationship-transaction model (Neyer & Asendorpf, 2018). An inventory specially developed for adolescence was used for this purpose, which records the level of personality functioning (Goth et al., 2018). Longitudinal analyses were used to confirm the influence of self-perceived social participation on the level of personality functioning of adolescents. Students who rated their social relationships in classroom more positively had a higher level of personality functioning. Adolescents with SEN SED showed a significantly lower level of functioning compared to their peers without SEN, with group differences decreasing over time. The presence of SEN, therefore, did not moderate or reinforce the influence of low social participation on the level of personality functioning.
The findings of this dissertation show that there are significant differences in social participation between adolescents with and without SEN. All three studies showed that students with SEN SED in particular exhibited low social participation and a lower level of personality functioning. Even if these findings are in line with national and international empirical findings, they highlight the need for significant action. Further efforts are needed that focus even more intensively than before on strengthening social interaction and recognising diversity
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture is a common sports injury, often treated with surgical reconstruction to reduce instability. However, surgery and rehabilitation do not always lead to restored knee function, likely due to altered sensorimotor control. Current evidence is mostly limited to cross-sectional studies following return to activity and sports, leaving a gap in understanding sensorimotor changes during the rehabilitation process. This thesis aimed to analyse the sensorimotor control during the first year following ACL reconstruction.
Methods:
This thesis is constituted of four studies. Initially, a systematic literature review was conducted including articles on active joint position sense (JPS) test in the knee following ACL reconstruction. Following, a cross-sectional study was implemented to analyse the influences of sex and limb dominance on as well as reliability and consistency measures of the angular reproduction and neuromuscular activity of the quadriceps muscle during the active JPS test in 20 healthy individuals. Subsequently, a longitudinal observation of the cortical and neuromuscular activity throughout the first year following ACL reconstruction was initiated. In the first longitudinal study, the cortical and neuromuscular activity as well as the reproduced angle of the active JPS test were analysed in 20 participants following ACL reconstruction during three measurement time points in the initial six months post-surgery. These results were compared to those of 20 healthy matched controls. The second longitudinal study included 31 participants, who were measured at five measurement time points throughout the first year following ACL reconstruction. Additionally, 31 healthy matched controls participated at a single occasion. All participants completed the active JPS test, which included measurements of the reproduced angle, cortical activity and neuromuscular activity of the quadriceps muscles. Thereafter, they performed a stair walking task, and at the final measurement time point, they completed single-leg hops, with recordings of the jump distance and the neuromuscular activity of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles.
Results:
The systematic review of 10 studies found inconclusive results regarding active knee JPS following ACL reconstruction and revealed methodological inconsistencies. The cross-sectional study found no sex or limb dominance differences in angular reproduction or neuromuscular activity, with poor to moderate reliability and acceptable consistency. In the first longitudinal study, no group differences in angular reproduction or neuromuscular activity were observed. . The examination of the cortical activity demonstrated that, in the beta-2 frequency band, electrodes over the frontal brain region exhibited higher activation in the ACL group during task execution with the non-involved limb. Conversely, the second longitudinal study revealed superior angular reproduction at all measurement time points in individuals following ACL reconstruction in comparison to their healthy matched controls. Between-group alterations were evident in the neuromuscular activity of the vastus lateralis; however, no differences were found in the cortical activity during the execution of the JPS test. Moreover, during stair descent a reduction in neuromuscular activity of the quadriceps muscles was observed at all measurement time points. An increase in neuromuscular activation in the hamstring muscles were found in the later measurement time points in the participants with ACL reconstruction in comparison to healthy individuals. The single-leg hop distance differed between limbs of the ACL group, with some alterations in the neuromuscular activity evident in the intra-limb comparison of the ACL group. Furthermore, a reduction in neuromuscular activity was observed in all recorded muscles during hop landings with the involved limb in comparison to the healthy control group.
Conclusion:
The JPS test has been proposed as a potential movement paradigm for examining sensorimotor control, including in the early postoperative period. Nonetheless, the revealed psychometric properties and discussed clinical relevance do not necessarily indicate that the angular error is an adequate outcome variable. However, no alternative measurement with simultaneous recordings of the cortical activity have been developed. The persistent alterations in neuromuscular activity observed in participants following ACL reconstruction highlight the necessity for the development of revised rehabilitation strategies.
For computer science lessons, the Gesellschaft für Informatik presents the “Frankfurt Dreieck” as a further development of the “Dagstuhl Dreieck” for discussion as a guideline for the concept of digitization. In the craft and technology lessons, a multi-perspective analysis of digitalization is carried out as an extension of the analysis according to the “Frankfurt Dreieck”, since information technology and social aspects must also be taken into account here. This analysis is compared with empirically recorded ideas from elementary school students and teacher training students. Taking into account existing national and international requirements standards for student and teacher knowledge, didactic reconstruction results in a selection of digital phenomena for the didactic structuring of digitalization for primary school students as well as for teacher training students

Piloting a competence network based on the Four Component Instructional Design model for data science teaching
In response to the growing demand for data scientists, universities are revising existing curricula and developing new data science programs. This educational redesign effort aims to equip graduates with the necessary skill-set to succeed in the rapidly evolving field. The reorganization of data science programs offers instructional designers the opportunity to shift the educational approach from an objectives-based pedagogy to using competence as the organizing principle. To accomplish this transition, educators need to create training situations where students can learn to apply data science knowledge within a realistic context. The Four-Component Instructional Design model can be used as a blueprint to design such a competence-centered curriculum. Hosting a data science program on an online learning platform allows university lecturers to collect data about the learning process. In this paper, we propose a competence framework based on the Learning Taxonomy by Anderson and Krathwohl, which can be combined with the Four Component Instructional Design model to track the acquisition of competence in an online data science program. The concept is being prototyped for a learning unit on k-means clustering, which will be evaluated using an iterative educational design research approach
Sprachtherapie meets Neurowissenschaften
This bachelor thesis investigates the tidal potential of Jupiter's moon Ganymede. The potential is represented in the form of second-order spherical harmonics and the frequencies of the coefficients of these spherical harmonics are then analyzed. This forms the basis for future modeling of Ganymede's internal structure, which can be achieved by linking the results of this work with structural models and future measurements of Ganymede's response to tidal forces by the JUICE space probe.
Of particular interest are the high-frequency components in Ganymede's tidal potential, which are primarily caused by the interaction with the other Galilean moons Io, Europa, and Callisto, as the body's response could be significantly amplified by Ganymede's subsurface ocean, if current estimates of it's depth are correct. Even though the resulting tidal response is likely to be dominated by the excitation from Jupiter, it could nevertheless be possible to measure these smaller excitations under the right conditions during the final scientific phase of the JUICE (JUpiter ICy moons Explorer) mission in orbit around Ganymede. Measuring higher-frequency excitations would provide direct evidence for the existence of an ocean beneath Ganymede's icy surface and also allow for a more accurate determination of the depth of this ocean when compared to currently used methods.
In addition to this practical application in the context of JUICE and the determination of Ganymede's internal structure, the contributions of the various objects in the Jupiter system are discussed, and their influence on different spherical harmonic coefficients of the tidal potential, each associated with a distinct spatial structure, is investigated. This allows for a better understanding of the interactions causing the tidal potential.
Not only the results, but also the methods used and developed in this work are relevant for further scientific research concerning calculating, analyzing, and representing the tidal potential, as they can also be applied to other objects than Ganymede.
When comparing the method based on orbital parameters and Keplerian orbits with the numerical calculation of the tidal potential based on ephemeris data, it was found, as expected, that the second method reveals many additional frequencies of Ganymede's tidal potential that are not present in the Kepler method, due to the simplifications made. Furthermore, since the interaction with the other Galilean moons can only be accurately incorporated using the ephemeris method, the Kepler method is less suitable for a detailed frequency analysis of the tidal potential than the slower but more precise ephemeris-based method, despite its lower computational effort.
Through a Fourier analysis and subsequent iterative fitting of the most dominant frequency peaks for the separate contributions of Jupiter and the other Galilean moons, as well as the combined total potential, many of the strongest periodic components of Ganymede's tidal potential were classified and their physical cause examined. In addition to the expected strong peak of the diurnal tide, further frequency peaks could be detected in the isolated potential exerted only by Jupiter. These occurred mainly at higher frequencies and can be explained by perturbations of Ganymede's orbit due to interactions with the other Galilean moons, which indirectly modulate the tidal potential exerted by Jupiter. In addition to these indirect contributions, Io, Europa, and Callisto also have a strong direct influence on the frequency spectrum of Ganymede's tidal potential, adding a large number of strong peaks, especially in the higher frequency range. Even though the amplitude of these peaks is still at least one to two orders of magnitude smaller than that of the diurnal tide, the large number of periodic components found with comparatively high amplitude gives hope for a resonant amplification of one of these components.
Even though, as expected, Europa has the strongest contribution to the total potential in a comparison of the three Galilean moons, Callisto's significant contribution is a surprising result of this work. Despite its great distance from Ganymede, the outermost of the Galilean moons contributes even more strongly than Io and even Europa to certain spatial structures of the tidal potential, more precisely the coefficients c20, c22, and s22 of the spherical harmonics representation. This highlights the strong dependence of the tidal potential on the relative orientations of the different moons orbits.
When comparing the various coefficients of the spherical surface functions, it can be observed that the average amplitudes of the highest peaks vary significantly. In particular, the coefficients c21 and s21, which describe effects that are asymmetrical to the axis of rotation, show significantly lower amplitudes than c20, c22, and s22.Diese Bachelorarbeit untersucht das Gezeitenpotential des Jupitermonds Ganymed.
Debris flows are a widespread, gravity-driven hazard in mountain landscapes and often cause significant damage to residents and property along the main flow path. Seismic instruments, which can be installed outside hazardous zones, have emerged as a promising tool for monitoring debris flows by capturing the seismic waves they generate. The difference in velocity between debris flows and the seismic waves enables the potential for real-time warning systems. However, translating seismic observations into robust, automated estimates of debris flow onset probability remains challenging. Machine learning techniques have enhanced the accuracy of event identification and are particularly effective in catchments with dense historical datasets. For example, decision tree-based models such as Random Forest have shown potential for designing debris flow warning systems using seismic data.
However, due to the variability in catchment geophysical settings and sediment properties, a profound understanding of the effective seismic features and the limitations of different machine learning models for debris flow warning remains lacking. Key unresolved questions include, but are not limited to: (1) whether calibration-free seismic features of debris flows exist that facilitate detection; (2) whether incorporating temporal pattern of debris flow footprints can enhance warning capabilities based on (1) and other existing seismic features; and (3) how pre-trained models from (2) generalize to debris flows exhibiting different levels of similarity and diversity in their seismic records. Collectively, these three research questions culminate in this dissertation, which presents a machine learning-driven framework for debris flow early warning using seismic data, developed through four interrelated studies.
For the first question, I apply Benford's law, which states that the first non-zero digit of given datasets follows a specific probability distribution: . This law, which is independent of geophysical settings and sensor instrumentation, provides a computationally cheap approach to identify anomalies in large datasets. Here, I selected vertical component seismograms to derive the first digit distribution. Seismic signals generated by debris flows follow Benford's law, while those generated by ambient noise do not. I propose both physical and mathematical explanations for the occurrence of Benford's law in debris flows, highlighting why this approach does not require calibration. My finding of limited seismic data from landslides, lahars, bedload transports, and glacial lake outburst floods indicates that these events may follow Benford's law, whereas rockfalls do not. Focusing on debris flows in the Illgraben, the Benford's Law-based detector (F1=0.64 for subwindow classification and F1=1.00 for whole-segment classification), which requires only twelve features and single-station data, is comparable in performance to an existing Random Forest model (F1=0.83 and 0.94 for subwindow classification before or after one check dam) trained on seventy features and six seismic stations. Furthermore, through cross-validation using various field-independent observational datasets, including acoustic recordings, video footage, and water level measurements, I demonstrated the potential of Benford's law to classify multiple events during the bedload transport process. The results reveal differences in the first-digit distributions in the time domain for bedload motion, turbulence with bedload motion, turbulence alone, and air. I suggest that Benford’s law is a computationally cheap, novel technique that offers an alternative for event detection, classification, and potentially for real-time warnings.
For the second question, I investigate eighty seismic features, based on findings from the first question and other existing seismic features, and evaluate three machine learning models to assess whether the temporal pattern of debris flow footprints can enhance warning capabilities. These seismic features, derived from physical and statistical knowledge of impact sources, are grouped into five sets: Benford's law, waveform, spectra, spectrogram, and network. The machine learning models belong to two families: two ensemble models, Random Forest and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost); one recurrent neural network model, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). Model performance is assessed across two tasks: single-station-based binary debris flow classification and multi-station-based debris flow warning. I analyzed the feature importance from the ensemble models and found that the number and even the types of seismic features are not critical for training an effective binary classifier for debris flow. When using models designed to capture patterns in sequential data rather than focusing on information only in one given window, using the LSTM does not significantly improve the performance of the single-station-based binary debris flow classification task over Random Forest and XGBoost. For the multi-station-based debris flow warning task, the LSTM model predicts debris flow probability more consistently and provides longer warning times. My proposed framework adopts a decoupled warning approach, enabling trained machine learning models to be applied in catchments without dense seismic networks. It also allows stakeholders to incorporate their own warning strategies into the workflow, simplifies machine learning-driven debris flow classification and lays the foundation for cost-effective, seismic signal-based early warning using sparse sensor networks.
For the third question, I first compiled a global debris flow seismic catalog with 119 events from 25 catchments, quantified the similarity and diversity of these events, and then investigated the response of pre-trained LSTM model from the second question to previously unseen catchments. Based on this catalog, I measured debris flow similarity in the frequency domain by fitting the slope of the power spectral density and in the time domain using dynamic time warping and hierarchical clustering techniques. I further evaluated a pre-trained LSTM classifier, originally developed for the second question and trained on 22 debris flows from the Illgraben catchment, to assess its ability to distinguish diverse debris flows on a global scale. My results show that debris flows exhibit distinct spectral patterns but share more temporal similarities. The classifier demonstrates strong global generalization, successfully detecting 40 of 55 non-Illgraben debris flows. And classification accuracy improved as seismic data uncertainty decreased. Furthermore, the model successfully detected the 2016 Bhotekoshi glacial lake outburst floods, suggesting that large volumes of debris flow seismic records can help reveal similarities with rarer but more catastrophic channelized events. My work presents a well-documented, open-access global debris flow seismic dataset with event labels and uncertainty levels. It serves as a valuable resource for developing and validating physical and data-driven models, aiming to improve our understanding of debris flow dynamics and enhance early warning systems.
Overall, this dissertation answers the three research questions by (1) introducing calibration-free seismic features to facilitate detection; (2) highlighting the crucial role of incorporating temporal patterns through LSTM model to enhance warning capabilities, rather than increasing the number of seismic features; and (3) providing a global debris flow seismic catalog with quantified levels of similarity, broadening the generalization potential for the pre-trained LSTM model from site-specific applications to global applicability. It demonstrates the feasibility of designing next-generation warning systems for debris flows and other channelized flow events based on the seismic features, machine learning model structures, and global debris flow seismic records developed herein.
