    No full text
The purpose of this thesis is to examine how the Sweden Democrats’ (SD) stance towards the EU has changed between 1992 and 2024. The essay examines how ideological continuity and strategic change can coexist, and how the party’s official positions relate to its practical politics. Our analysis is based on a qualitative method of ideological analysis that focuses on SD:s party platforms and their ideological evolution as well as a quantitative content analysis that focuses on SD:s election manifestos and their evolving political stance on the EU. The theoretical framework draws on concepts such as conservatism, nationalism, and euroscepticism, as well as the relationship between ideological consistency and pragmatic adaptation. The results show that the Sweden Democrats’ ideological core has remained intact but its expression has shifted over time, possibly in response to changing political circumstances. Most notably, the party’s EU policy has moved from a clear call for withdrawal to a more reform-oriented approach, reflecting a broader European trend among like-minded right-wing populist parties. At the same time, a tension emerges between the party’s ideological rhetoric and its concrete political positions. Thus, the thesis ultimately highlights how the Sweden Democrats’ ideological flexibility enables tactical adaptation without fully abandoning the party’s fundamental values

    No full text

Blockchain-Powered Smart Labels: Increasing Consumer Engagement in Sustainable Fashion Practices

    No full text
The fashion industry is increasingly criticised for its lack of transparency and unverifiable sustainability promises. This has led to an erosion of consumer trust and undermined responsible consumption. This thesis aims to design, implement and evaluate a user-centric, blockchain-based smart label system to optimise transparency and trust in sustainable fashion. As part of this study, a prototype was developed using a design science research approach that integrates a Hyperledger Fabric-based blockchain network, QR code-enabled smart labels and a user-oriented web interface. This system enables decentralised, tamper-proof documentation of sustainability-related product information that consumers can access in real time. The prototype was evaluated using the System Usability Scale (SUS) and qualitative interviews with five participants. The results show excellent user-friendliness (SUS score of 88) and demonstrate that direct access to detailed, verifiable information on the supply chain and sustainability can strengthen trust and positively influence purchasing decisions. Participants appreciated the transparency and reliability of the system and expressed a greater willingness to choose products with accessible, trustworthy sustainability information. The results demonstrate that an open, modular and user-oriented blockchain solution is technically feasible and effective in promoting trust and transparency in a sustainable fashion. The work concludes with practical recommendations for future implementations and highlights the relevance of interoperable systems in light of new regulatory frameworks such as the European Union's Digital Product Passport

Framing Disruption : A Multi-Method Analysis of Finnish and Swedish News Framing of Underwater Infrastructure Disruptions

    No full text
This study investigates the underlying ideologies of Finnish and Swedish news media by analyzing news texts about underwater infrastructure disruptions in the Baltic Sea between 2023–2024. Using an inductive, multi-method design—first conducting thematic analysis on news headlines and leads, then applying news frame analysis to a purposive sub-sample across four outlet types (public service TV, commercial TV, broadsheets, tabloids)—five dominant frames emerged: intention, threat, support, negotiation, and economic. The study revealed that both countries foreground intention and threat frames, but Swedish outlets mirror official narratives more strongly and portray events as distant with limited economic fallout, whereas Finnish outlets convey heightened vulnerability and financial concern. In Finland, broadsheets emphasize culprit and conflict narratives and tabloids highlight economic impacts; in Sweden, framing is broadly consistent, though tabloids occasionally invoke a threat frame via Finnish-Russian tensions. These findings reveal how national context and media format shape crisis narratives, underscoring the need for further cross-national, longitudinal, and computational framing research

To be in drag is to stand against the norm

    No full text
Drag queens have become increasingly popular in the news media over the years, even in Sweden, where they have been part of mainstream culture for a long time. This thesis investigates how Swedish media discusses drag queens, to reveal underlying attitudes towards minorities. The topic is explored through qualitative content analysis, through the lenses of Social Representation Theory, Queer Theory and Moral Panic Theory, which offer the possibility to investigate how media discourses influence public opinion, the way drag queens embrace concepts that are central in queer studies, and how these two elements can generate moral panics. The results reveal that the representation of drag is extremely nuanced, presenting both positive and negative attitudes, supportive and excluding narratives. Finally, this thesis contributes to a better understanding of how media have a role in shaping an understanding of drag, and the mechanism they can use to enforce exclusion or inclusion

Learning teaching mathematics with instructional technology: A praxeological analysis of a Ghanaian mathematics teacher education course

    No full text
This study explores how a mathematics teacher educator prepares pre-service teachers to integrate instructional technology into mathematics teaching, using the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD) as a framework. A qualitative case study at a Ghanaian university discusses the MTE’s practices through video observations and a semi-structured interview. Findings reveal that representation of practice through modelling provided PSTs with practical examples of instructional integration, while decomposition allowed for refining lesson plans through structured analysis. However, the absence of approximations of practice due to time constraints limited experiential learning opportunities. The study emphasises the need for explicitly articulating meta-didactical logos and simulated teaching environments to bridge theory and practice.ReMat

    No full text

The elusive residence permit for self-employed persons in Sweden

    No full text
The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate whether the statutory provisions governing residence permits for self-employed persons meet the requirements imposed by the administrative principles of legality and objectivity. The purpose is also to propose legislative reform which would improve the regulations compliance with the administrative principles. These propositions will be based on the Finnish regulatory solution to residence permits for self-employed persons. To fulfil this purpose, the study uses Hjertstedt’s doctrinal legal method, combining descriptive (including comparative), critical, and constructive analyses.   Chapter 2 outlines the principles of legality and objectivity within administrative law with a particular focus on its application in immigration law. The principle of legality is operationalised through four requirements. These are a requirement of legal basis, a requirement of promulgation, a requirement of clarity, and a requirement to limit the retroactive application of laws. The principle of objectivity encompasses requirements for administrative bodies to act impartially, nonarbitrarily and in accordance with the principle of equality before the law. The principles are closely interconnected. When regulation lack clarity, discretionary assessments by case officers may arise, which can be exploited if not constrained by the principle of objectivity. Moreover, while the principles establish minimum requirements, it is noteworthy that these may be exceeded to a greater or lesser extent depending on the nature of the substantive law.  Chapter 3 forms the core of the thesis and provides a detailed assessment of whether the requirements to obtain a residence permit for self-employed persons are compliant with the administrative principles. The assessment finds that several central criteria lack a desired level clarity and leave broad discretion to caseworkers at the Swedish Migration Agency. These include the criteria that an applicant must be able to operate the proposed business, the criteria that the business plan must be realistic and the threshold for determining whether the applicant exercises sufficient influence over the company to be regarded as a selfemployed person. These criteria also risk being subject to arbitrary and inconsistent application, undermining the principle of objectivity.  Chapter 4 examines the Finnish regulatory framework as a potential model for reform. The Finnish system offers clearer legal definitions for who qualifies as a self-employed person. It also delegates the assessment of the applicants’ ability to operate the proposed business and of if its business plan is realistic to specialised authorities, enhancing objectivity. Additionally, Finland provides a separate residence permit for innovative entrepreneurs. This structure enables clearer 3 and more transparent requirements for complex and innovation-driven companies. It also allows for more specialised scrutiny of these applications which makes the administrative processing less arbitrary and increases the likelihood of procedural equality being upheld.  The thesis concludes by arguing that while Sweden’s current statutory provisions governing residence permits for self-employed persons formally satisfy the principles of legality and objectivity, the provisions should be reformed to make its compliance more convincing. This is especially important as legal uncertainty and administrative discretion hamper the government's aim of attracting highly qualified labour. Inspired by the Finnish model, the thesis proposes that Sweden introduce clearer thresholds as to who is regarded self-employed. It also proposes that the assessment of an applicant’s ability to operate the proposed business and of if the applicant’s business plans is realistic is delegated to a specialist body to overcome the criteria’s troublesome relationship with the principle of objectivity. Such reforms would also improve legal certainty and contribute to Sweden’s competitiveness in attracting international entrepreneurs.

Sport: An Antidote to Social Exclusion? : Exploring sport’s role in preventing social exclusion and improving the well-being of disadvantaged individuals

    No full text
This anthropological thesis explores how participation in community-based sports programs can encourage social inclusion and improve the well-being of individuals struggling with mental health issues, homelessness, drug addiction, isolation, or loneliness in Scotland. Two months of fieldwork were conducted at a Change Centre run by the non-profit organisation Street Soccer Scotland, which included several semi-structured and informal interviews, as well as participant observation, with a particular emphasis on sensory ethnography. By drawing on theories such as somatic modes of attention, body technique, and interaction and encounter, this study demonstrates how sport, particularly football, can foster social connections, provide emotional support, and facilitate recovery. While the organisation provides a relaxed and inclusive environment, challenges to exclusion persist, deriving from pressure to perform and traditional gender structures. Nevertheless, this thesis highlights the potential of sports as a tool for social change, offering alternative pathways to community, self-worth,and healing for disadvantaged individuals

    No full text
