Good reading : Historical and Contemporary Conceptions of Reading from the Perspective of Librarians in Biblioteksbladet 1916–2024

    No full text
Under samtliga perioder understryks dock läsintressets värde. This study investigated how librarians conceive good reading from a historical and contemporary perspective, to then analyse and problematise the conceptions by relating them to power aspects. The relevance of this is, among other things, the actuality of reading promotion today and that librarians are a strong force in such work. The empirical material consists of articles in which librarians convey their voices about reading and are taken from the trade journal Biblioteksbladet from the years 1916, 1976 and 2020–2024. The documents were primarily analysed using qualitive content analysis, but the analysis method also incorporates elements of discourse analysis since concepts from Michel Foucault’s discourse theory were used. Critical studies of reading then acted as theoretical framework. The material reveals that librarians from 1916 mainly imagine that good reading occurs when it gives bildung, and that librarians from 1976 view it as happening when reading what they classify as good literature. According to librarians from 2020–2024, reading is good reading, but it should be pleasurable and voluntary. During all periods however, reading interest and its value is underlined. Further similarities are that the norm is lonesome reading, and that good reading is conveyed as more or less accessible depending on the individual. Based on Foucault, the library is an institution where power/knowledge creates truths and produces the definition of good reading, and one conclusion is that the meaning of the concept has changed since 1916. Librarians from 1916, 1976 and 2020–2024 are thus interpreted as working within different discourses and regimes of truth. Going against the regimes of truths can result in marginalisation. In addition, librarians think that especially boys have difficulty engaging in good reading, which affects their knowledge access. However, the discourse during 2020–2024 indicates that what is included in the concept of good reading has broadened, which highlights how discourses’ power is not merely repressive. Librarians can therefore broaden the meaning of good reading in several contexts if they spread a regime of truth and discourse that does not restrict reading. In doing so, inclusion is promoted while discrimination is prevented

Participating through speaking, or? : Linguistic participation during placement at the hospital

    No full text
This study investigates linguistic challenges and opportunities for doctors with a foreign degree during a “language placement” at a Swedish hospital. Through observations and recordings from two key practices, the team meeting and the ward round, it analyzes what linguistic or communicative practices the student participates in, as well as how linguistic participation is affected by institutional roles. The study is theoretically based on the concept of community of practice and legitimate, peripheral participant (LPP; Wenger, 1998), and the concept of institutional role (Halvorsen & Sarangi 2007), which enables an analysis of the student’s position in the team compared to full participation as a professional physician. Empirical results show how the linguistic requirements of professional participation are made visible in the two key practices, both containing continuously conversation, in ways organized institutionally. Additionally, results show that even though the placement contains large parts of conversation, the student does not engage in the interaction to any great extent (of the 480 min of the recordings, she speaks 9 minutes 55 sec., distributed over 3 occasions). She participates both in a student role and as a professional colleague, and mainly on the chief physician's initiative. Through the perspective of legitimate peripheral participation and community of practice, the amount of verbal participation as expected institutionally: even though she is a trained doctor, without a Swedish license, she does not have access to making decisions or ordinate treatment, and shes does not have a leading role communicatively.. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of how practice structures and linguistic environments can promote or limit language development, and provides insights into how professional language training can be adapted to better support these individuals in their pursuit of a professional role in Swedish health care

Meaningful holiday educare : Selective traditions, spatious frame-works and the invisible care capital during week-long school holidays

The peripheral film : a case study on the position of film within Stockholms stadsbibliotek

    No full text
I denna diskursanalytiska fallstudie undersöks synen på film som ett problem inom organisationen SSB utifrån Carol Bacchis (2009) diskursanalytiska ”what’s the problem represented to be” (WPR)-ansats, vilken också utgör studiens teori. The film collection and the access to film through the public library is decreasing within the public library organisation Stockholms stadsbibliotek (SSB). In this discourse analytic case study the view on film as a problem in the organisation SSB is investigated through the lens of Carol Bacchi’s (2009) discourse analytic tool ”what’s the problem represented to be” (WPR), which is also the theory of the essay. Since this essay is a case study the study’s empirical data is public statistics, interviews and organisational documents that in turn has been analyzed through WPR. The conclusions shows that there is no common explanation to the films disappearance from SSB, the problem is instead put aside and not problematized from the organisational perspective. How the film’s position is presented differently in policies, statistics and the informants’ statements adds to the the challenges for justification for existence which prevails for the film’s position within SSB. Due to the democratic and cultural aspects of the represented problem the view on film may be affected negatively, both in it’s own right as a library media and as a cultural form

To be a nursing assistant : A qualitative study of nursing assistants' professional identity in elderly care

    No full text
The purpose of this paper was to get a deeper understanding of how nursing assistants' professional identity is shaped and created while working in elderly care. To do so, we conducted eight semi-structured qualitative interviews with elderly care workers from various fields, ages and work experiences. The collected data has been analysed using Tajfel & Turner's social identity theory (1979) and Stets and Burke's identity theory (2000). This paper's findings reveal that nursing assistants' professional identity is formed by several factors. This includes relationships with collegues, superiors and the ones recieving the care, the organisational policies enforced by the employer, external factors such as lack of respect in that line of work, and lastly the individual's morals and values. Depending on an individual's situation, this paper shows that they either choose to leave the field due to it's low societal status, stay due to their own values or stay due to a lack of opportinities to leave the field, but keep focusing on the positive aspects of this line of work. This study concludes that one's professional identity is a result of an intertwined process between multiple mechanisms.

Interplay Between Generations : a qualitative study about social inclusion of older adults and intergenerational programs at public libraries

    No full text
The incentive for this paper lies in the demographic development towards a larger population of older adults worldwide. Furthermore, there is a growing concern of involuntary loneliness becoming a big public health problem in Sweden, and it is particularly found among the elderly and young adults. How do public librarians currently view this phenomenon and in what ways do it affect their operations towards older adults? An additional question this study aims to discover is what kind of intergenerational programs exist at librariesand which limitations and possibilities can be identified in the public library work in regard to this topic? This approach and area of research is rarely found within the field of library and information science, why this study attempts to help fill that gap. Through a qualitative methodology using interviews and a text analysis based on a socio-spatial framework, the answers to these questions are explored. Some conclusions were drawn. Social inclusion is best achieved through a combination of many different means, one of which is intergenerational programs. When organizing intergenerational programs in libraries, considerations should be given during the planning phase, but serendipitous side effects should not be underestimated. A combined approach that enables several outcomestherefore seems advantageous. Making use of both low- and high-intensity arenas for this purpose is also beneficial. Factors such as collaboration, a common interest and legitimacy appear to increase the success for intergenerational interactions, whereas a lack of a social “glue”, weak spatial conditions, and stereotypical beliefs may hinder them.

    The Nordic Countries and Humanitarianism

    No full text
Humanitarianism has been a defining feature of Nordic international engagement since the beginning of the twentieth century. Its evolution from individual initiatives to a state-led, institutionalised and globally recognised tradition reflects both continuity and strategic adaptation. After the end of the Cold War, Nordic humanitarianism adjusted to new geopolitical conditions, while “humanitarian interventions” in places like Somalia and Kosovo challenged traditional Nordic principles of peace and neutrality. Nordic humanitarianism in the twenty-first century is confronted with challenges such as protracted conflicts, politicisation of aid and increasingly extreme weather events

Visions of the Öresund Bridge, 1865–2023

    No full text
The Öresund bridge between Denmark and Sweden has been key to the realisation of a cross-border region across Sjælland and Skåne, and it also links the Scandinavian peninsula with continental Europe. It was completed in 2000 with the involvement of local, regional and European actors, although its inception reaches back in time to the nineteenth century. A globally renowned icon, it is a symbol of many and sometimes opposing things, including Nordic cooperation, the solving of real or imagined crimes, freedom of movement, and the policing of borders in times of crisis. Nonetheless, it is undeniably a positive image of cross-border relationships

Violence as content : Patrick Bateman, Michael De Santa and late-capitalist culture in American Psycho and Grand Theft Auto V

    No full text
The aim of the study is to examine how violence is represented in Bret Easton Ellis’s American Psycho and Rockstar Game’s Grand Theft Auto V in relation to late-capitalist culture. Drawing on Fredric Jameson’s theory of postmodernism and late capitalism, together with Linda Hutcheon’s account of postmodern aesthetics, the essay analyses the protagonists Patrick Bateman and Michael De Santa as figures shaped by environments saturated with consumption, media and spectacle. Previous research by Leigh Claire La Berge and Richard Godden on American Psycho, and by John Wills and Kyle Moody on GTA V, is used to situate the texts in debates on finance, masculinity and the American Dream. The study argues that both works depict violence not as a clear break from everyday life but as something embedded in ordinary routines of work, leisure and entertainment, and that their different forms as a first-person novel and an open-world video game affect how this violence is experienced and understood. It concludes that in both cases legal and moral consequences are left uncertain and that the fictional world actively absorbs and keeps low-consequence violence rather than resolve it clearly. This matters for the investigation since it shows how both texts present late-capitalist culture as system in which violence can be repeated, consumed and enjoyed without leading to a stable or legal closure

    No full text
This thesis examines the artistic practice of Ana Mendieta through a close reading of the video work Alma, Silueta en Fuego (1975). The analysis situates the work within the feminist art practices of the 1970s and the period’s critical engagement with questions of the body, identity, and belonging, drawing on theories of performativity and abjection. Particular emphasis is placed on how the work produces meaning through process, absence and materiality rather than through traditional forms of representation. In Alma, Silueta en Fuego, Mendieta replaces her own body with a silhouette and uses fire as a means of dissolution and transformation. Through this strategy, the work articulates experiences of exile, loss and conditional belonging. The thesis argues that the work functions as a form of artistic resistance to fixed identity categories, in which what disappears continues to operate meaningfully through its remains. In this way, what is lost to fire persists as meaning through the ashes
