Hållbarhet under Press : Strategier och dilemman i svenska textil-SMF

    No full text
This bachelor’s thesis examines how small and medium-sized textile companies in Sweden work with sustainability, from the formulation of goals to implementation and follow-up. The study applied a qualitative research method and conducted semi-structured interviews with five companies: Didriksons, Klippan Yllefabrik, Klässbols Linneväveri, Scorett, and Haglöfs. The analysis is structured around three phases: defining sustainability, integration into business operations, and practical implementation. The study concludes that SMEs require tailored frameworks that balance flexibility with standardization. While medium-sized companies are able to act strategically, smaller companies need support to navigate regulatory complexity. Success depends on embedding sustainability into the core business rather than treating it as a separate project

The crofter is a woman : Gender division of labour in rural semi-landless households, Sweden 1850–1900

    No full text
This paper contributes to the empirical question of the labour organization and gender division of labour in a semi-landless rural group during the second half of the nineteenth century, a period charac-terized by developing agrarian capitalism. Thereby, we also add to the broader question of the role of gender division of labour in economic transformation. Through a triangulation of sources – crofters’ contracts, work lists and ethnographic questionnaires, we found that men performed a much higher number of corvée days per year compared to women. Moreover, we found that many core agricultural tasks were done by both men and women. The labour organization, on the other hand, was clearly gendered – the role as a crofter in the sense of doing corvée labour for a landowner was primarily a male experience, while the role as a crofter in the sense of working one’s own small plot of land was to a larger extent a female experience

PFAS-förorening i kustnära ekosystem : En studie av sediment, vatten och bentiska organismer i Östersjön

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been produced and used since the 1950s. The chemical structure of PFAS makes the substances both lipophilic and hydrophilic. These properties have contributed to the use of PFAS in a number of industrial and commercial applications. Wastewater treatment plants are a collection point for contaminated water, and currently, there are no methods to completely purify the water from PFAS. Therefore, wastewater treatment plants constitute a direct source of PFAS emissions into the environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence and concentration of perfluorosulfonates (PFSA), perfluorocarboxylates (PFCA), and their precursors. This was done by sampling sediment, water, and the organisms Monoporeia affinis, Macoma balthica, and Mytilus edulis in close proximity to the wastewater treatment plants Himmerfjärdsverket and Przedsiębiorstwo Wodociągów, both of which have their outlets in the Baltic Sea. The results of the study showed significant correlations between the concentrations of PFCA in sediment and PFSA in M. balthica with the distance to the wastewater treatment plant Himmerfjärden. No further significant correlations were found, indicating that the persistence, spread potential, and presence of diffuse sources of PFAS affect the concentrations in environmental matrices and organisms. The results also showed a very high concentration of PFAS in M. affinis, which differed from the other organisms. To put the results in a larger context, the study discussed how PFAS can spread from primary consumers to the remaining parts of the food web

Background: Global crises can cause significant volatility in financial markets by creating uncertainty and changing investors' risk behaviors. Previous research shows that different crises, depending on their type, affect markets and industries in different ways. Despite this, research on how global events affect the specific stock market broken down into different industries is still limited. This underscores the need for further studies in this area. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the consequences of the three different global crises in terms of stock market volatility. Method: The study uses a quantitative and deductive approach with event window analysis of 40 trading days around the start dates of the crises. Volatility is measured by the standard deviation of logarithmic returns. Data is collected from Investing.com. Theory: The theory is based on a main theory, which is Behavioral Finance, which supports more irrational behavior, then there is a complementary theory, the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH), which supports rational behavior. Conclusion: The study shows that volatility increased the most during the Covid-19 pandemic. The results show that the type of crisis, rather than industry affiliation, had the greatest impact on whether changes in volatility were statistically significant. The study shows that EMH and behavioral finance theories complement each other by explaining market reactions during different types of crises

Class in the Classroom : A Cohort Study of Leader Role Occupancy Across the Life Course

    No full text
Early life experiences are important precursors for developing leadership skills and acquiring formal leader roles later in life. The antecedents of leadership emergence in childhood have, however, not been subject to much empirical research—nor their links to actual leader role occupancy in adulthood. This study examines leadership emergence in a life-course perspective based on a large cohort of boys and girls, including survey and register data from the early 1960s to the late 2000s. We found a strong association between informal leadership emergence in childhood and formal leader role occupancy in adulthood. Social class was a significant predictor of both, mainly mediated through cognitive capacity and educational attainment in adulthood. Overall, the same factors predicted leadership emergence for both men and women. However, women received significantly more nominations for informal leader roles in childhood compared to men—accounting for a relatively larger share of the indirect effect of social class on holding a managerial position in adulthood. In contrast, the likelihood that a male held a managerial position in adulthood was relatively higher if he had been active in his spare time in childhood and had become a parent. Our findings thereby confirm the “parenthood advantage” for men vis-à-vis leadership role occupancy. With its prospective design and richness of data, the study shows how individual, structural, and behavioral factors interact in how leaders emerge across the life course, in general and among men and women respectively

Dancing as Sustainably Being and Moving through the World

    No full text
This chapter approaches sustainability from an educational and artistic angle, notably through the dance educator’s gaze, as a contribution to conceptualizing sustainability education. In this, education and the arts generally are viewed as spaces for young people’s efforts to enter into dialogue with the world – past, present and future. Providing space to work in an art mode like dance is seen as essential to education’s existential remit, a task the chapter explores as owning a dimension of sustainability in itself, in terms of catering for a sensitive dialogue between the self and the natural and social world, calling for survival. The chapter is written as an essay, tentatively conceiving dance teaching as aesthetic teaching and pleading for an aesthetic turn in education. At its core is the capability and willingness to be permeated, through the senses, by what the world offers. The dancing young person is seen as an agentive subject coming into being by submitting to movement and imagination, vulnerable and receptive to what comes from ‘outside’. In the concept, teaching is seen as allowing the world with its phenomena to reveal itself aesthetically, offering its gifts and lending its heritage to us to take care of and live in balance with before passing it on to new generations.  In the chapter ethical and relational, existential and sustainability aspects of dance and education are brought to the fore, reminding us of what education essentially is all about, what dance as primordial interhuman and world-human interaction can teach us about these fundamentals, and, hopefully, what dancing together can teach us about sustainability education. The arguments are informed by Gert Biesta’s ideas on art as education, subject-ness and democracy in a world-oriented education, in dialogue with John Dewey’s and Maxine Greene’s thinking of art as experience, aesthetic literacy and education, and dance scholar and educator Susan Stinson’s stances on dance education and dancing as becoming.Sustainability, World Heritage, phenomenon-based learning and multilingualism are the central issues woven together in this book. The four themes are the cornerstones of the research and development project entitled Sustainable World Heritage Learning through a Phenomenonbased Approach (SveaSus, 2017–2024). Through the 16 contributions we wish to contribute to an in-depth discussion about why and how the four areas are relevant in contemporary educational contexts. Our group of researchers and teacher educators have explored large entities of subject matter, teaching outside the campus and collaboration with experts and units outside the university, conceiving a teacher education that surprises, challenges, and encourages holistic and sustainable thinking and being. It led to a university course, collaborations with a diveristy of educators and artists, to analyses, publications, and eventually the development of methods applicable in teacher education. This book summarises findings of the endeavour and further outlooks. With sustainability as the focus, phenomenon-based learning as the method, and World Heritage as both the goal and the learning environment, SveaSus is a unique teaching and learning experiment that promotes the goals of the Finnish core curriculum. At a higher level, SveaSus relates to many of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals (the SDGs) as they are formulated in Agenda 2030.The SveaSus Project, Department of Education, Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Helsink

Tales of Cyberspace and Artificial Intelligence : Diverging Stakeholderships?

    No full text
This article traces the evolution of the Internet from the 1990s to the 2020s and compares it with the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly following the public launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. It identifies both parallels and divergencies between these two overlapping technological domains, focusing on the growing integration of AI into online applications. The central argument is that, whereas users once played a decisive role in shaping the Internet's trajectory and politics, the contemporary AI landscape is dominated by two principal stakeholders: governments and private companies. User groups, by contrast, have become largely marginalized in debates on AI policy and regulation. While users in cyberspace historically acted as co-creators, they are thus far confined to the role of consumers in relation to AI. This shift toward elite-driven governance raises important concerns regarding the emergence of authoritarian tendencies in the development and implementation of AI and digital technologies in general

    "Omsorg och lärande i hallen"

    No full text
