Background: Gynecological examination can be both physically and psychologically challenging experience for women. Nurses play a central role in establishing a sense of safety and contributing to a positive care experience during the examination. Aim: The aim of this literature review was to explore young adult women’s experiences of nursing support during their first gynecological examination. Method: A general literature review was conducted, including the qualitative scientific articles were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: The study resulted in two main themes: A holistic perspective in the care encounter and The importance of participation. These included four subthemes: Feeling vulnerable, Feeling secure with accurate information, Feeling seen, and Feeling trust. Conclusion: Women’s experiences of nursing support during their first gynecological examination are influenced by nurses´ approach, the quality of interaction, communication, and involvement in care. Insufficient information, cultural factors, and previous sexual experiences may increase feelings of vulnerability, while respectful encounters and clear information promote a sense of safety and trust. Person-centered care is therefore essential, and further research is needed to improve communication and interactions in the context of gynecological examinations. Keywords: Gynecological examination. Young women, nurse, support, pain.
Nurse’s experiences of caring for children and their families in palliative care : A general literature study within palliative care units
Background: Palliative care should be provided regardless of age or diagnosis and is based on principles such as autonomy, justice, and relieving care. Children are particularly vulnerable and require developmentally appropriate care in which parents must be considered. Nurses have an important mission in pediatric palliative care, which demands both medical knowledge and emotional competence. Aim: To synthesize and summarize qualitative studies that have explored nurses’ experiences of caring for families with children in palliative care. Method: A qualitative literature review was conducted, following Polit and Beck’s nine-step model. Searchers were performed in databases such as CINAHL and PubMed, and ten scientific articles were selected. The articles were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis to identify and analyze patterns in the data. Results: Two main themes were identified: providing safety for families with children in palliative care and creating a professional encounter with families in pediatric palliative care. Four subthemes were identified: to offer professional care, to build trusting relationships, to offer a safe dying process, and to experience challenges with the ability to recover. Conclusion: Caring for children in palliative care is emotionally demanding for nurses and requires safety, trust and adapted communication. To support nurses’ work in pediatric palliative care, education, supervision, emotional support, and a sustainable healthcare organization are needed.
Nurses´experiences of caring for patients in forensic psychiatric care : A literature review
Background: Forensic psychiatric care is provided to individuals who have commited a crime under the influence of a severe mental disorder. This type of care is often carried out in high- security environments with limited patient autonomy, creating complex care situations for nurses. They are expected to deliver person centered care within legal, safety related, and ethical boundaries. Aim: To explore nurses ‘experiences of caring for patients within forensic psychiatric care. Method: A literature review with an inductive approach based on qualitative studies. A total of 13 articles published between 2012 and 2023 were included. Results: The findings show that nurses in forensic psychiatric care often work in complex and emotionally demanding contexts. They describe a constant balancing act between maintaining safety and providing care characterized by empathy and respect. Many report ethical dilemmas, feelings of inadequacy, and lack of organizational support. At the same time, there is a strong desire to make a difference for patients and to build meaningful relationships despite existing restrictions. Conclusion: To support nurses in delivering high quality care, increased understanding of their role, improved organizational support, and opportunities for reflection are needed
When a loved one has a first episode psychosis : A relative perspective
Background: Psychotic illness is one of the most serious psychiatric conditions, and despite this, not everyone receives the help they need. Involving relatives contributes to a better prognosis for recovery, and the specialist nurse plays an important role in including relatives to gain a more comprehensive understanding and thereby provide person-centered care. Aim: The purpose was to highlight the experiences of relatives of a family member who is experiencing a first episode of psychosis. Method: Structured literature review with a thematic analysis based on Braun and Clarke. Results: The results consist of five themes: “Relatives’ first encounter with the illness”, “Relatives’ struggle to get the right support”, “An emotional journey”, “Interaction and support within healthcare” and “Barriers to relatives’ involvement in healthcare” Conclusions: Being a close relative of someone experiencing their first psychotic episode is an emotionally challenging time, often marked by uncertainty and varying experiences of care, ranging from supportive to lacking. The stigma surrounding mental illness creates additional barriers, leading to feelings of powerlessness and reduced access to quality care. The psychiatric specialist nurse plays a key role in addressing these challenges by including and empowering relatives, which can contribute to better recovery and reduced suffering.
Background: Despite major medical advances, stigma remains a significant barrier in the healthcare of people living with HIV (PLHIV). Stigmatization occurs both through individual actions and structural barriers that affect patients’ right to equitable and respectful care. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore experiences of stigma in nursing care among PLHIV within healthcare settings. Method: The study was conducted as a general literature review based on nine qualitative research articles retrieved from CINAHL and PubMed. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis according to Braun and Clarke (2006), applying an inductive approach. Results: Three main themes and seven subthemes were identified: Enacted and judgmental stigma in healthcare encounters, Structural and systemic barriers, and Resistance, coping, and restoration. The findings revealed that stigma manifests through discriminatory attitudes, breaches of confidentiality, and unequal healthcare structures, while patients actively develop coping strategies to regain dignity and autonomy. Conclusion: HIV-related stigma within healthcare remains a global and ethical concern. Enhancing knowledge, reflection, and education in person-centred care can help reduce stigma and promote equitable and compassionate nursing care for people living with HIV.Bakgrund: Trots stora medicinska framsteg kvarstår stigma som en betydande barriär i vården av personer som lever med hiv (PLHIV).

These factors affect safety, quality of care, and the work environment. Conclusion: To improve care, increased psychiatric competence, organizational support, and a person-centered approach that promotes empathy, respect, and safety in the nurse–patient encounter are needed.
Nurses' experiences of meeting and caring for people with dementia within inpatient care : A literature review
Background: People living with dementia are a growing problem that is expected to increase over time. This places high demands on the skills of nurses to care for these people. It becomes especially difficult for people with dementia when they need healthcare in inpatient care because the care environment is not adapted for people with dementia. The perspective of relatives is important. Purpose: To describe nurses' experience of meeting and caring for people with dementia in inpatient care. Method: A general literature study with searches in CINAHL and PubMed which was analyzed using thematic analysis method. Results: The study is presented according to two themes, the Nurse's clinical understanding in the nursing process and Work environment & care environment and four subthemes, working methods, person-centered care, quality of care and patient safety. Conclusion: Nurses experience the care of people with dementia as complicated. Time and resource shortages are an overarching problem. Person-centered care and quality of care depend on a good care environment. Nurses want to contribute more to the person-centered care of people with dementia than the organizational conditions allow. Further research: Cultural differences and religious aspects.
Nurse’s experiences of meeting women who have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM) : A general literature review
Background: Female genital mutilation, FGM, is an ancient custom often regarded as a rite of passage. Over 230 million girls and women have undergone FGM, which primarily occurs in the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia. FGM is most often practiced when the girl is newborn up to 15 years old and is considered normal in the countries where it occurs. The tradition lacks medical purposes, which violates human rights. Aim: The aim was to investigate nurses' experiences in interacting with women who have undergone FGM. Method: The method was a general literature review in which articles with a qualitative approach were collected from the databases CINAHL and PubMed. Results: Two main themes emerged: “Dynamics and challenges of the care relationship” and “Support and development for healthcare staff” and three subthemes: “Communication and interaction”, “Patient centered care and transcultural understanding” and “emotional and personal challenges in the care relationship”. Conclusion: Lack of cultural competence and communication among nurses in developed countries negatively impacts healthcare, creating fear, prejudice, and ethnocentric thinking. This can lead to complications in care and deteriorated relationships with patients. There is a need for education and clearer guidelines on how to approach women who have undergone FGM.
Nurses' experiences of caring for adult persons with mental illness in emergency department : A literature review
Background: Health is more than just absence of illness. In 2019, 970 million people worldwide were living with some form of mental health condition. Nurses have a significant role in providing care and support to people with mental health problems who visit emergency departments. To provide adequate care for these people, increased knowledge about nurse’s experience of caring for people with mental health problems in emergency departments is required. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe nurses' experiences of caring for adoult people with mental illness in the emergency department. Method: This is a general literature review structured using Polit and Beck’s nine-step model. Systematic searches of qualitative articles were conducted in the databases PubMed and Cinahl, where nine scientific articles were included and analyzed using Braun and Clake thematic analysis with an inductive approach. Result: The study identified two themes followed by five sub-themes. Under the main theme of organizational challenges in nursing, subthemes were identified as lack of knowledge, healthcare environment and lack of time. Under the main theme of nursing meetings, subthemes were identified as challenges in communication and emotional experiences. Conclusion: Nurse’s experiences highlighted that increased competence about mental health and improved care environments in emergency departments can facilitate the care of people witch mental illness. Lack of knowledge affects nurse’s confidence in their own abilities and impacts on nursing. Investigation of nurses' experiences of caring for people with mental illness in emergency departments after nurses have undergone training is a suggestion for continued research.
