    No full text
Background: The concept of euthanasia is used in this study as a general term for interventions aimed at ending the life of a very sick person, based on the patient's wish. Nurses play a central role in the care of patients at the end of life. The care can be complex, partly due to the laws nurses need to adhere to. Patients describe uncertainty in the disease process making them unsure about choosing to end their own life. Depending on the law, various dilemmas regarding suffering and dignity are experienced by both nurses and patients.  Purpose: The aim of this general literature review was to describe nurses' experiences of euthanasia.   Method: A general literature review based on ten scientific articles of qualitative approach. The study is designed in accordance with Polit and Beck's nine-step model and has used a thematic analysis model by Braun and Clarke for data analysis.   Results: The results are presented based on two main themes: Emotional experiences and Meaningful aspects for good nursing care, with five associated subthemes.   Conclusion: Work related to euthanasia affects all nurses in different ways. The emotions that arise depend on, among other things, personal values, workplace conditions, the care relationship and the collegial environment. As it is common for healthcare professionals to receive questions about death in interactions with patients the subject needs further illumination

    No full text
Background: An increased life expectancy leads to more elderly people suffering from dementia and thus their need for emergency care for somatic diseases and other illnesses increases. However, an emergency environment can be stressful for both patients and nurses. It particularly affects patients with dementia due to communication breakdowns between the patients and the nurse. Due to the lack of time and knowledge to understand the patients’ needs, nurses are not able to provide adequate care.  Aim: To investigate nurses´ experience of caring for patients with dementia in emergency care.  Method: Literature study with ten qualitative articles. The databases CINAHL and PubMed has been used for searching. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyse the data.  Results: Two categories: Need for personal care and challenges in care. The subcategories that emerged are Communication and treatment, the importance of cooperation, organizational conditions, knowledge and feelings.  Conclusion: Nurses feel that care environments are not adapted to dementia patients and meeting these patients is a challenge. Lack of knowledge and experience in dementia care recognised as a challenge in the work of nurses. Therefore, more research is required to increase understanding of the nurses´ experiences and improve care for dementia patients.

    No full text
Background: Sepsis is a serious condition and is considered a global public health problem. Symptoms of sepsis can initially be vague and atypical, which makes it difficult to identify and treat patients. Within emergency healthcare, high demands are placed on nurses' knowledge and ability to quickly make decisions. Nurses' main area of competence is nursing, and the work must be based on guidance documents, ICN's code of ethics and evidence-based knowledge to achieve safe care. Continued high mortality has prompted a critical review of the assessment criteria and the effectiveness of nursing measures. Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe nurses' experience of caring for adult patients with sepsis in emergency settings. Method: A general literature study based on ten scientific articles. The study has a qualitative approach and is designed according to Polit and Beck's nine-step model. Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis model was used in the analysis of the data. Results: When analyzing the material, two themes emerged, which constituted the result. The two themes were Competence and Organization with associated subthemes. Conclusion: Nurses' experiences of nursing adult patients with sepsis in emergency care were influenced by factors linked to both competence and organization. Experiences linked to the care of sepsis in emergency healthcare are knowledge and a need for interprofessional collaboration, guidelines, and access to resources. However, further research is needed on the subject

    No full text
Background: Cancer is the leading cause of death globally. When cancer is no longer curable, treatment shifts to palliative care, which aims to alleviate suffering and enhance quality of life. Existing research indicates that nurses experience uncertainty regarding their competence and in the irinteractions with this patient group. This can potentially have adverse effects on patients'. Therefore, it is crucial to understand how patients' with an incurable cancerdiagnosis perceive palliative care. The aim: The purpose is to describe patients' experiences of palliative care for cancer. Method: A literature study with a qualitative design. The study followed Polit and Beck's nine-stepmodel for literature studies. Results: 11 scientific articles were reviewed, three levels of categories could be identified. One main category: Incurable cancer as a living condition. Two categories: Relationships and Impaired ability. Additionally, two subcategories for each category. Relationships: Care relationships, Loved ones; and Impaired ability: Suffering and Quality of life. Conclusion: Patients' experiences are reflected in relationships and the decreased ability. The patients' experiences depicted the importance of good relationships. The impaired ability affected the quality of life and created suffering. The nursing model the six S’s could consistently be linked to the patients' experiences. Further research should possibly investigate the introduction of a seventh s in the nursing model, the six S's, Soul care

    No full text
Background: Obesity is a global health issue with numerus associated diseases and complications. The structure of society is a contributing factor to why obesity continues to grow. Preventive work needs to develop to provide the right conditions for a sustainable lifestyle for patients with obesity, which is the primary care's main responsibility. Aim: To summarize and synthesize qualitative research regarding patients with obesity experiences of being greeted in primary healthcare. Method: A qualitative literature overview following the nine-step model by Polit and Beck (2021). The review includes eight articles which were analyzed by the six-step model for Reflexive Thematic Analysis by Braun and Clarke (2006; 2019).  Results: Three themes were identified including seven subthemes. The identified themes were Stigmatization, Insufficient support and The importance of establishing trust in the meeting with healthcare providers.  Conclusion: Patients with obesity experience lack of support within primary care because of the stigmatization within society. These patients carry feelings of blame and shame regarding being categorized as obese based on a specific tool, instead of being greeted based on their own perception of health. This leads to patients not seeking care even if they need it
