WINDOW REUSE AND RECYCLING: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES IN THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR : A Case Study of the Church House Renovation in Uppsala and Million Programme Housing in Sala: An Economic and Environmental Perspective

    No full text
This thesis investigates the conditions for window reuse in the building sector, with a specific focus on a case study of a church renovation in Uppsala, Sweden. The aim is to analyze both challenges and opportunities in the reuse process from a technical, economic (LCC), and environmental (LCA) perspective. The results from the case study are compared to cost and environmental calculations for new versus reused windows and further related to a renovation project in a Million Program housing area in Sala. Findings show that regulations, lack of certification, technical requirements, and logistical barriers hinder large-scale reuse. However, under the right conditions — such as high technical quality and local reuse — reused windows can be both environmentally and economically viable. Differences in project-specific factors, such as heritage value, building type, and economic constraints, strongly affect reuse potential. The study highlights the need for supportive policies, incentives, and technical adaptations to enable circular windows to be used in renovation projects

Electrifying vehicles in stockholm’s Clean Air Zone Class 3 : An Assessment of the Effects on Grid Infrastructure, Environmental Sustainability, and Economic Implications

    No full text
As the transition towards green energy becomes an increasingly crucial step to fulfill the global climate goals, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are becoming an increasingly attractive alternative as a means of de-carbonizing the transport sector as both the technology itself and the public perception are improving. However, there are numerous challenges associated with high EV penetration mainly due to the highly temporally dependent nature of charging demand. This report will analyze the implications of electrifying the vehicles of a proposed clean air zone of class 3 in Stockholm and investigate the potential solutions to make this zone a reality. The methodology of this study involves MATLAB modelling to investigate the impact of EV charging on the grid, analysis of real data from the local electrical grid, identification of potential business opportunities, and assessments on the associated economic implications. The findings conclude that although practical challenges are present, there are ways to mitigate these in order to successfully implement the Clean Air Zone. These solutions involve regulations on charging behavior, smart charging, and demand-side management, as well as peak shaving using photovoltaic installations in combination with vehicle-to-grid technology for maximum efficiency and sustainability of the local electrical grid. The successful implementation of the Clean Air Zone Class 3 would establish a scalable model for sustainable urban electrification, ultimately paving the way for a nationwide green energy transition of Sweden’s transport sector.INT

    No full text

    No full text

    No full text
Purpose: This study examines how modern energy efficient building techniques outperform older 1970s Swedish villas in energy use and evaluates the cost of upgrading older homes to meet current standards.Method: Two 117 2 models were simulated using IDA ICE software, a 1970s villa and a bronze certified passive house. A retrofit plan for the villa added insulation, triple glazed windows, and a heat recovery system, with costs and energy savings analyzed. Results: The passive house used less heating energy than the villa. Retrofitting the villa reduced its energy use to comply with Swedish building codes, but the upgrades cost 145 575 SEK with a 56 year payback period due to modest annual savings. Conclusions: While passive houses achieve energy efficiency, retrofitting older homes is costly and slow to break even. Financial incentives or policy support are critical to making energy efficient renovations viable for homeowners, ensuring broader adoption of sustainable building practices. int

PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE FOR FREIGHT TRAINS: A MACHINE LEARNING APPROACH TO OPTIMIZING WHEEL REPLACEMENT SCHEDULES : Machine Learning Approach for Predictive Maintenance

    No full text
Efficient maintenance planning is crucial for railway operators to minimize costs and operational disruptions. Green Cargo, a major rail freight provider, currently replaces train wheels based on scheduled maintenance or reactive repairs, leading to inefficiencies. This thesis explores the application of machine learning to predictive maintenance by analyzing sensor data from DPC detectors mounted along railway tracks. These detectors measure force impacts as the train moves, providing key indicators of wheel wear. Using supervised learning techniques and grid search optimization, predictive models for left and right wheel damage were developed and evaluated. The left wheel model achieved a test R2 of 1.0000 with an RMSE of 0.08 kilonewton, while the right wheel model achieved a test R2 of 0.9873 with an RMSE of 0.36 kilonewton. Forecasting trends over a three-year horizon identified one axle requiring replacement, with left wheels typically failing first. Maintenance scheduling logic was implemented to replace both wheels on an axle when either exceeded predefined thresholds. This research demonstrates the potential of predictive maintenance to enhance efficiency and reduce costs in railway operations by leveraging advanced machine learning methods and historical data from DPC detectors. Future work will focus on integrating real-time monitoring and refining predictive capabilities for broader industrial applications

Handling Confidential Data in LLM Prompts

    No full text
Increase in popularity of Large Language Models (LLMs) throughout different applications led to important privacy challenges, especially when it comes to handling Personally Identifiable Information (PII) that is embedded in prompts of users. PII being exposed to LLMs, or to third party providers that are managing them can lead to privacy breaches and regulatory non-compliance. This work investigates several methods for protecting confidential data inside LLM prompts by anonymizing PII before model input and de-anonymyzing the output. To address this, the custom Named Entity Recognition (NER) model trained on ai4privacy/pii-masking-200k dataset was developed in order to identify PII spans. These spans are replaced by placeholder tokens and a mapping to original value is stored. Two approaches are compared for de-anonymization: (1) fine-tuned seq2seq “Seek” models (T5, mBART, BART) that predict original text from anonymized text and evaluated using BLEU and ROUGE metrics; and (2) a mapping-based approach that simply replaces placeholders with the stored originals. While fine tuned “seek models” can generate understandable de-anonymized text, they mostly hallucinate incorrect details. Mapping approach achieves 100% accuracy and semantic consistency. Besides its accuracy, the mapping strategy is preferred for reliability and performance (does not have to generate new words). This work demonstrates an effective end-to-end pipeline for PII protection which contributes clear guidelines for safer LLM utilization

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF MACHINE LEARNING METHODS FOR HOUSE PRICE PREDICTION

    No full text
This study investigates the ability of three different models to predict apartment prices in Stockholm. The models used are Multiple Linear Regression, Random Forest and XGBoost. Their performance is evaluated using common regression metrics including Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Squared Error, Mean Absolute Percentage Error and R-squared. The results also include a version of the MAE adjusted per square meter to allow more practical interpretation. Among the tested models, XGBoost produced the most accurate predictions with the lowest error per square meter and a high R-squared value. Random Forest performed similarly well while Multiple Linear Regression showed weaker results and higher error. These differences suggest that more advanced models are better suited to handle the complexity of the data. The analysis of feature importance shows that living area was the most important factor in all three models. Other influential features included the year the building was constructed as well as the location measured through latitude and longitude. Variables such as heating included and whether the apartment was newly built had only minor impact. Overall, the results indicate that machine learning models like Random Forest and XGBoost are effective tools for estimating property prices and can support better decision making in the real estate market
