The Midstream Collective / Collective Midstream

How do we hold each other through a change of phase? This is the seminal question asked in this thesis as it explores networked systems populated by urban metabolisms and waste streams. Using an embodied feminist framework, this paper attempts to highlight short comings in the current treatment of road snow sludge in the metropolitain areas of Stockholm, Sweden and proposes the use of a systemic, intergrated mycological strategy to filter and detoxify snow-melt-water before it re-enters natural bodies of water.

    Super Superficial

    No full text
The project Super Superficial takes my own practice as its starting point. Being someone who expresses myself through physical objects, working with sustainability is a given for me. Therefore my former mantra, when creating, was to “do as little harm as possible”. But during the master’s  programme, I felt the need to rethink this. Where was the joy of creating? Where was the hope? The complexity? All the things I wish to pass on to the people who come in contact with my work. The things I believe we need for real change to happen. I wanted to expand my idea of sustainability to not only be a question of materials, but also to include the emotional impact that my creations can have. To not limit myself to a concept of less is more but instead to add and layer and color! My goal was to realize a visual world that I dream to inhabit. Just as the realm of emotions is often regarded as an unserious subject, the surface on a piece of furniture is seen by many as superficial. But the surface is where we encounter an object, the place where we use our senses, and this meeting point is where my ideas has come to life. Working with color and ornamentation I have reclaimed the surface on the lounge chair as an actualized place of power and change

The curious Bagatelle of Care and Authority

    No full text
How do care and authority relate to each other, and why is the relation between them important to understand for architects and designers? By experimental modelling and experimental thinking this project tries to understand how the caring for different matters in the design process affect the results and consequences of care. The text draws parallells to early aviation pioneers and how a shifted focus from sheer power to manoeuvrability served them their success.  Through the development of a curious wood treatment technique, and through it’s imagined applications to homes, mainly in large scale housing projects, this project searches eagerly for answers on matters related to care, authority, responsibility, a reasonable degree of rationality, standardisation, the role of the architect and the role of the designer

窸窸窣窣xixisusu-All the small sounds around you : A ramble through language, poem, translation, interpretation & endless imagination

Robert Frost once remarked, “Poetry is what gets lost in translation,” and many literary people find translation to be a near-impossible task.  I can feel that all the “translation” more or less is kind of violence. Behind the language, the culture. Behind the sentences, the individuals. Behind the words, the emotion. Behind the blank space, the currents. If the “original one” is a flower, then translation is cutting the flower from its roots and putting it into a vase (A totally different environment). When Moa read this, she said "Or translation as a seed that is planted in a different soil, and thus grows into a different kind of flower, but still a kind of flower?" I like this idea.  I’m living in translation. Not only translating between my mother language and English, but also between texts and images, even between images and images. And in this case, I believe everyone is living in translation.  My classmates come from different countries all over the world, and none of us has English as our mother tongue. How lucky we are, we all have our private secret language. This is a very interesting environment for me, I became very brave and started thinking deeply about languages and translation.

    Absolvering

What should I say? : A study on how visual arts teachers can organize presentations to support students with public speaking anxiety

Work it Out : Kompakt och komplett träningsutrustning för hemmet

And the wheel of fortune keeps spinning

In this research I examine, mainly focusing on representation in storytelling, how certain aspects of a persons identity in relation to the social environment gives us different modes of discrimination and privileges. I have interviewed individuals around Sweden, during 2020 to 2022, between the age span of 4 to 80 years old concerning societal and familial upbringing. I choose to focus on upbringing since how we reflect about what has shaped us tells a lot about a person and the society. What struck me during the research and the interviews is that we live at the same time, at different places, with different identities, resources and capacities giving us different experiences and views of the world. With vastly different lives: what makes us able to relate to each other? Is it our ability to feel? To feel joy, irritation or loneliness. That no matter how one's life is we all have feelings, that perhaps gives us a chance to recognize, mirror and to empathize with each other? The project resulted in six textile sculptures and eighteen photos of the textile sculptured fictional characters each photographed in their own everyday life, in “their own reality”, in different places around Sweden. The sculptures, their individual jobs, studies, unemployment and places are inspired by the interviews and the research

Grime on a Mountain of Haze : Imprecise Instruments of Vague Spaces

This project explores vagueness in space and how it can help us train and sharpen our senses as designers and architects to adapt to the realities of scarcity and how to make less-extractive processes of creating space. Using ephemeral but recurring phenomena such as air flow, reflections, refractions of light and moist in architecture as inspiration, I seek to make everyday-spaces, such as underneath a wash basin, a radiator or behind a door, interesting again. With methods inspired by the land art movement to find new ways of seeing interior spaces, I use attentiveness and the idea to not destroy or disturb to observe already existing spaces. The project seeks to tell a story of neglected beauty in forgotten spaces and translating them into (im)material architectural spatial installations.  I hope this project can bring an understanding that protecting and appreciating what we already have is probably more sustainable than constantly changing and readjusting spaces to fit our wants and what we think we need. To train our senses and get new ideas of beauty and function in already existing interior spaces, brings what is out of focus into the light. This might be a way to partly slow down the industry of interiors and redirect how we work as architects and designers to understand that everything doesn’t need to change, but if we seek change, we can do it by immaterial phenomena, such as light through the interstices, that will occur as long as there is life.

    Apocalypse Fatigue

    No full text
In this project I am exploring 6 different life forms; snail, slime mold, frog, rock, moss, and fungi. I am approaching these life-forms as agent entities for me to channel, and act for them as vessels.  “Apocalypse Fatigue” is both an exploration of my own artistic practice, by attempting to create works from a nonhuman-centric perspective and investigating how different entities can be co-creators, and an exploration of its sustainability.   It is also an attempt to approach nature as a direct actor to create multiple narratives regarding climate change. Taking the perspective of another organism allows me to imagine alternative ways of being in the world, and through them, I can explore my own emotions, artistic visions or reflect on social issues with a fresh perspective. In a wider way, my work tries to challenge, modestly, dominant world views and presents an alternative to the apocalyptic narratives so often mobilized when speaking about climate change
