This essay by Andrew Allen-Olivar uses the film script form to present scenes that follow a fictional town where each scene follows different inhabitants – from the new kid, to the tree, to the fish, to the undead locals that inhabit the town. The work is inspired by magical realist writers, poets and philosophers such as Jorge Louis Borges, Alejandro Zambra, Anne Carson and Franz Kafka. Through these scenes, the author's intentions are to convey a place that shifts – between time and place; between memory and exaggerations; between narrative and documentation

Observations of a Window Frame : About the Importance of a Forgotten Detail

    No full text
Due to the geographical location, the amount of daylight in Sweden varies greatly during the year - the lack of light is part of our everyday life. Regardless of the season, the sun’s position gives a light that seems to fall from the side, it kind of drags itself in through the windows. As a result, it is easily influenced by the surroundings. All the edges, corners and profiles that stand in the way create an endless variety of shades. Given these conditions, it is a good reason to devote time to the detailing of all the parts of a window. In this master’s project, I am directing my gaze towards the window frame and more specifically towards the framework’s profiling. By observing the shape and the color language of different profiles, the perceived contrast between light and shades is noticed and interpreted into new. Based on the qualities of the Nordic light, this project hopes to clarify and show with concrete examples why decision-making around the window frame is crucial for how we perceive the incident light. Relatively small differences in profiling create a large effect in contrasts, I find, and consequently, a more complex window profile enhances the character of the window and the incident light. This project is about looking at something specific, to observe and to explain what already is there

Luise Schröder founded a private business school in 1910 in Stettin, a city once part of Germany. With a focus on typewriting and stenography, she was a local educator of modern communication. Throughout four generations, her family was impacted by global technological developments and socio-political shifts.‘I Never Learned to Type with Ten Fingers’, edited by Schröder's great-great-grandson and graphic designer Laslo Strong, compiles stories from a family-run school. It delves into the past century of typography, through personal and corporate documents. Pictures, letterheads, graphic prints, signs, and newspaper articles provide insight into a particular corporate identity. In dialogue with this research, a series of typefaces was designed dedicated to the characters of the school. They give voice to anecdotes and speculative stories about family and typography

Cliffhangers : A narrative tool for wonder and creativity in the classroom

    No full text
This study is about applying narrative theory into the media classrooms. Can a teacher create wonder and curiosity in his or her classroom by using classic storytelling techniques? The use of compelling storytelling has been used throughout history. With today’s media climate and the endless amount of streaming entertainment that surrounds us, makes us feel, fantasize, become inspired, and forget about time and space, how can we as teachers not imagine applying that sense of wonder into the classroom? This study´s main focus is on cliffhangers as an educational tool in the classroom and examines the teachers’ point of view on the subject of cliffhangers and the use of narrative techniques. How can a teacher apply classical narrative techniques to keep or even inspire to wonder, curiosity, and the will to learn more in the media classroom? Does a cliffhanger motivate the student to learn more? Do professional teachers see possibilities or restrains by using narrative techniques, such as cliffhangers in their classroom? Lastly, how can a cliffhanger contribute to a more creative classroom climate? This paper tries to find the answers to these questions. This paper examines the concept of cliffhanger, how to construct one, how it is used in normal context within film and television, and how it can be used as a creative tool in the classroom. I create two cliffhangers for two teachers and observe their performance in the classroom. Supported by previous research concerning the importance of film pedagogy in school and media education, the concept of affordance, narrative theory, achieving a sense of wonder, and the importance of a creative teaching practice. The reason for this study is to inspire and awake new ideas in other teachers to how one can practice a creative classroom and to hopefully stimulate the students to their own creativity and wonder. The result points to the importance of keeping the cliffhanger relevant to the assignment and subject, the teacher’s performance, and a general positive outlook on narrative techniques in the classroom. With the major theme cliffhanger and narrative theory in education, this study is summarized and presented with a 3D structure of the literally word cliffhanger in a cliffhanger situation. Will the creative teacher save the day? To be continued…
