Hope of the Remains : An exploration of the interior architect's role and responsibility in urban development

    No full text
The project Hope of the Remains deals with urban development from a spatial design perspective, using the Lövholmen area in Stockholm as a starting point.  The project’s purpose is to create a dialogue, to better understand and improve urban development. Also, to question what my responsibility with expertise in interior architecture is and to explore what resources the interior architect possesses.  Lövholmen bears an industrial history while also having a prominent art and design identity. The issue at stake is whether to demolish or preserve remains of the industrial period. The project may be a way of appreciating historical values, questioning environmental imprints, but also creating a nesting spatial experience for people. Like how animals seek a smaller, comfortable, and safe space to settle down. And by that, I mean spaces for people to gather to work, have conversations, have a meal, or just stay in while reading a book, which is mostly the smaller existing spaces or the smaller newly built interior rooms. However, public space is important to be preserved within the future of Lövholmen as a residential area. To create a vibrant neighborhood with coexistential values.  Hope of the Remains contains a concept and idea that are developed for the future of industrial properties that are currently empty. The idea is based on the property Nitrolack designed by the architects Nils Tesch and Lars Magnus Giertz for AB Wilh. Becker's paint factory, that was built in 1943-44. My master’s thesis investigates nesting as a phenomenon and its significance in these types of large spaces that hold qualities and challenges. How void and mass can be formed by color and shape. The project Hope of the Remains reflects our time, a debate about the urban growth and our responsibility for how we develop the city and how we can make use of remains, history and culture in the future. The design proposal is aimed to encourage commitment and interest. It is a way to create a conversation and inspire new visions for the development of Lövholmen and similar areas. The vision is intended to encourage dialogue. The design proposal within the project is a vision of a future in relation to what already exists on Lövholmen both historically, today and taking care of the industrial modernist remains for a new future. It is a way to increase the value of the existing structures, both a historical and environmental impact, but also the possibilities of the existing spaces as an asset for what can be developed here.

This essay navigates around ideas of normality, assimilation, language politics and nationalism in relation to deafness and the history of the minority languages Swedish Sign Language and Meänkieli. It takes it starting point in how Audism has manifested itself within my family, a brief history of the education of the Deaf and Swedish Sign Language and continues by looking at how language oppression is used as a tool by the nation state, and ends with looking at art as proposals and methods of political resistance, expanding on the art form Visual Vernacular (VV), with the background of mine and Karin Keisu’s multi-channel film installation Back to Back (2022)

We dispose of things when they fall out of style, when taste changes, when they break or when we can no longer find a use for them. Sometimes, we sell things when we see value in them. Sometimes we recycle. Sometimes we feed the landfill — the meeting point for materials that have lost their utility. Many of them have the potential to serve their use much longer than having just one life as one object. My degree project investigates what role disassembly plays in the lifespan of a material. Can it support the recovery and subsequent use of matter? Whose responsibility is to take care of an object’s afterlife? By researching the possibilities of exchanging fixed pieces of joinery for detachable ones, my project reinvents the way we attach materials based on forces such as tension, pressure and gravity. Can joinery invite us to disassemble

Home/work: piece of furniture for the home to interact, play and exercise with. In Sweden we sit in average 10H/day. This is associated with a lot of risks, such as cardiovascular diseases, increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat and abnormal cholesterol levels. Home/work tries to nudge us (who sit too much) to move a little bit more in our everyday life. The objects are inspired by climbing holds, crash pads and bouldering. The project questions the concept of ergonomics and its inherent positive connotation

My work is about using industrial saltrock to create furniture that speak to both humans and animals. The result is a communicative furniture shaped though the interaction of man, animal and nature. I believe that this subtle interaction, which makes us feel the presence of animals, can help us reconnect with our senses and thereby create empathy for the non-human existence of life.   In my work, I want to create conditions for an animal-inclusive design process where the salt’s ability to change is used for the purpose of design, in this case modular pieces of furniture. The location of these objects is intended to capture the attention of people. They stand out from the organic environment, white cubes surrounded by nature. The crystal from the salt reflects light, creating a piece of furniture that gives the illusion of a floating refulgent island. With time, the saltrock object will change, and during this transformation I cast off the different shapes of stages that the salt cube takes before it dissolves.  In the urban environment, they are reinterpreted and shaped into new materials. Now still with traces of animal imprints to remind us of their distant presence. The module is assembled in shapes according to the tectonic possibilities, which is reminiscent of how the game “Tetris” form is designed. With this project, I hope to increase the volume of wilderness and nature in modern urban architecture.  With my method of allowing animals to be involved in the design process, I have taken a step back as a designer based on a traditional design process. My intention was never to make a piece of furniture in the traditional sense, but to capture a moment of the missing connection between city and nature.  A big challenge for me was to dare to let go of control of the expected end result, to dare to leave room for the actual imprints that the animals created without post-constructions. At the same time, there was a great excitement in letting the forms take their own expression, the uncertainty became an inspiration to dare to believe in the inherent strength of the abstract form.

    Compost Compendium

I collect things, I chew them up. I put them in a pile, and they merge. Snippets of texts, a note in the margin, screenshots and ornaments rub against each other until they become something else. A fertiliser for new ideas to grow from.  The seed of this project was a climate crisis-related numbness: I felt stuck between individual responsibility and powerlessness. Between wanting immediate restorative action and realising the need for a deeper systematic change. I began digging into the history of the Western view on nature, tracing its dark roots. Now, two years later, I re-emerge, and I want to share my findings. Using collage as a visual translation of the compost pile, the project is an expression of multiple voices, exemplifying the need for collective thinking and action in these matters.  With the Compost Compendium I offer a collection of entry points into a reimagining of the relationship we have with the ecologies in and around us. I have filled it with things that have inspired me, angered me, puzzled me, made me smarter, made me laugh, made me want to get my hands dirty. I invite my reader to go foraging and collect their own pile. Dive into it and share it with a friend.

Ongoing places, generated traces : An exploration of realtions, translations and temporarity in city planning transformation

This project is an exploration of co-produced space in a city planning process. With the intention of exploring participatory design processes in the field of spatial design, this project is focusing on co-production of space and the role and power of the architect as a relational and spatial initiator. Since participatory design processes have become an implemented tool in municipal city planning, it is of relevance from a perspective of interior architecture to through practical work be both specific, aware and transparent about how these processes could be designed.  The project takes place in a public park in Gottsunda, a district south of Uppsala, built as a part of the Swedish million programme in the 1960’s- and -70’s. Gottsunda is now undergoing a city planning transformation and expansion. With background of city planning and architecture from that time, this project has been seeking knowledge of what relevance participation plays in city planning today.  This project has been conducted through a series of spatial activities at site, historical research and meetings with a group of teenage girls living in Gottsunda.  The conclusions and implications of this project are that the interior architect’s tools as tactile and close to both object, places and users, in this case residents, are of relevance in city planning. Participation is relational, and the interor architect's ability is to both design, understand and translate those relations into the practice of spatial design.
