Imagine how much we are missing. So many people's artistry, stories, knowledge, soundscapes that are not given space in our world. In Sweden, two out of ten songwriters (Sveriges Radio 2022) and three out of ten employees in the tech industry (Statistiska Centralbyrån 2020) are women. What do the sounds we haven't yet heard sound like? Unheard Sound wants to let the unheard sounds be heard. In this project, I have explored how women, non-binary and trans people can be invited to participate in the electronic music scene to make the music and tech industry more equal. The project has resulted in a hardware synth that aims to challenge current norms about how a synth should be designed. A focus on technology places the power of the sound in the hands of the user.  The design process has been driven by interviews with women working in the music industry and workshops with a primary school and an LGBTQ+ youth center

    A Knitter's Media Guide: Knitting as a Meaning-Making Device

    No full text
In a dialogue with Catherine Dormor’s book, A Philosophy of Textile (2020), this paper argues that knitting has a unique position in the sphere of textile. To understand the technique as both practice and theory is not only to acknowledge its potency as expression and reflection, but also to perceive textile in a broader perspective. Starting with the article Offset, Buch- und Werbekunst (Offset, Printing, and Commercial Art) written by one of the key figures of the Bauhaus weaving workshop, Gunta Stölzl in 1926, I outline the historical context, and justify the significance of my research. Employing the concept—championed by the artist/psychoanalyst Bracha L. Ettinger—, the Matrix, in particular together with (Inter)relationship, Techne as Dormor suggests, I navigate knitting in general as well as my own practice. By closely inspecting knitting as a mode of both making and thinking, this paper proves that knitting has a capacity to embody multiple layers of time and space, and by doing so, becomes a meaning-making device whose production questions, challenges and overturns hierarchical and binaristic modes of thinking

    Materialiserade erfarenheter

    No full text
This essay tries to, in a post humanist approach, answer questions regarding the agency of materials, things and art in relation to the body; the bodily experience of art. This is also an essay about an artistic practise that has developed during three years in a context where the craft skill and knowledge about certain materials have been in focus while the artist herself has been interested in a more emotional and theoretical approach to the materials and what they do. The text is a result of what happens when those two different ways of relating to art and craft are encountered.

    Assumptions, antagonism, apocalypse

    No full text
This essay delves into the intricate interplay between truth, fiction, pain, and artistry in the contemporary global environment, within the framework of my artistic practice. Through an interdisciplinary lens influenced by Zygmunt Bauman, Donna Haraway, and Boaventura de Sousa Santos, it explores the tensions inherent in navigating an artistic practice amid a world marked by pain and impending uncertainty. The essay explores themes of assumptions, antagonism, and apocalypse, with a foundation in the theories of situated knowledge, hyper-politics, and the impact of liquid modernity on the artist's role. The narrative culminates in a discussion of katabasis, drawing parallels with mythological journeys and the transformative potential of descending into the underworld. Through a series of exhibited works from my solo exhibition Failed Escapist: The Mass Extinction Archives, I navigate the emotional landscape of mourning, searching, and confronting a world in crisis.

How To: Use Craft as an Everyday Intervention of Joy

    No full text
This paper questioned how we could utilise feelings of joy, specifically those within a craft context, as a tool of intervention in everyday life. I explored using craft, both in its making and experiencing, as a means for carrying joy into the daily life of the public, thereby increasing well-being and potentially acting as a catalyst for change. I argued the importance of joy in our lives, as well as the need for public accessibility to art and craft. I wanted to use this paper to draw focus on the value I place upon somatic engagement of the body, specifically when we engage with craft, art and our everyday lives. I believe that by centring the experience of the body and educating about the importance of somatics, we can explore a different methodology for engaging with our everyday environments. I argued somatic understanding is critical, as it allows us to move from a purely cognitive understanding to one that is experiential, thereby creating a more accessible and inclusive framework for creating and understanding art and craft

What work environment do we encounter as artists? What can our bodies handle? In my artistic exploration, I have taken an interest in the risks we expose ourselves to in our work environment at Konstfack. Everyday life in the workshops brings many examples of the challenges our bodies face. We like to test new technologies, new materials, plastics, and chemicals with strange new properties to deal with. The body, the material, and the work environment have been central in my process, but perhaps above all the question of why we are so happy to ignore the risks we expose ourselves to. How do we deal with the knowledge of these threats on a psychological level? Through sculptural techniques and choice of materials, I have explored the airborne threat, a subject that leaves room for subjectivity. It is the idea of a threat, something abstract and invisible, sometimes tangible, sometimes not. What we choose to believe in can in some cases have a more significant effect than the actual material impact on our bodies. Something that has long been considered healing can suddenly be seen as harmful – a duality that I have expressed in my artistic exploration. The multifaceted experience of these threats has the ability to affect every part of our lives. To give an experience of control, and downplay the subconscious presence of the body's vulnerability we create new behavior patterns or change our entire perception of reality. But what happens if we come to terms with what moves in the subconscious? Can we internalize the knowledge of the body's vulnerability?

The consumption of interior design and furniture by Swedes has increased dramatically in recent years. From 2009 to 2019, the consumption of furniture and household goods in Sweden increased by 47 per cent, making it the most expansive consumption category according to the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation. One reason for this is the increasing pace of trends. Colours and styles quickly go out of fashion, and furniture that breaks down quickly or is difficult to repair adds to the clutter in Swedish homes. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet the UN's climate goals, we need to stop producing 'wear and tear' products, buy more second-hand, decorate according to the season and be more consistent in our choice of materials. One way to reduce your own climate impact is to buy products that have been produced locally. This both reduces carbon dioxide emissions as the goods are transported shorter distances, and benefits the country's economy as more jobs can stay in the country. In a country like Sweden where the manufacturing industry is the largest industry in the country in terms of number of employees, according to the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth, more items should be able to be produced at a shorter distance. We can also influence our buying behaviour by buying fewer items so that fewer items are in circulation. One way to do this is to design products with more uses, thus increasing the time an object is used in the home.  An object that spends a lot of time unused in our homes is the kitchen stool. An object that is only brought out when we need something from the top shelf or when cooking with children but is otherwise hidden in a corner or tucked away in a wardrobe. This project explores how the kitchen stool can have a greater role in our homes by expanding its use and giving it a more central place in the kitchen. The stool is designed according to the principle that it should be serialised and produced in the local area. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version
