Cultural Sustainability : Influence of Traditional craft on Contemporary craft cross-culturally
No full textAmong the four dimensions of sustainability (environmental, economic, social, and cultural), it is the latter aspect that is least examined. However, understanding how culture contributes to the long-term sustainability of communities and societies is one key to a holistic understanding of sustainability itself, and further how it can impact the textile in different cultures. This project is based on understanding cultural influence when practice is moved from one place to another. As traditional artisans struggle with addressing the consequences of economic issues and finding new models of conducting their temporal business, their very existence and preservation contribute to the long-term sustainability of communities and societies as a whole. This project is taken further by following two approaches: first, to understand the values and ideals embedded in traditional textile which contributes to the textile industry and serves as the foundation of long-term survival; second, by acting ‘culturally sustainable,’ to ensure its endurance, thus vouching for safe interests of future generations. The project presents a perspective of a traditional practice moving from India to Sweden as a craft practice instead of a business opportunity to produce functional products. It investigates what happens to an Indian practice when it merges with the aesthetics of Swedish craft and culture. This paper puts light on the fact that eastern crafts are led by western designers and associations for its globalisation into industries. However, it is followed by the negative impact in the form of the exploitation of artisans and the loss of tradition in traditional crafts in this process. Also leading to singularity in craft all over world losing the cultural value. This practice-based research brings the two cultures (Indian and Swedish) and their traditional practices together in one work, presenting the influence of it on each other and presenting my perspective on these cultures being part of both without losing the cultural value and leading to the evolution of traditional practice

ORIENTING THROUGH the ORDERS
No full textIn this essay I make an attempt to propose a different view of the world. A look that turns to the world as it is. A look that longs for a world that addresses the world as it is. In this text, as in my graduation exhibition, I have used the cabinet of curiosities as a method. I have built the text in different text fragments where I present different ideas, thoughts and discussions about the displacements that people are put in, in a class society. The headings act as an instruction or rather a pointer for the reader. I use dialogue, poetry and lyrical prose in this hybrid essay to build a scene of the displacements I write about. Class markers that trick one into consuming oneself closer to norms have a central position in my essay. I want to highlight how different subordinates play out with each other.How performative assimilation is just performative assimilation, thus other limitations masked in glitter. Beware of the distance that is the consumer society. Beware of how our subjectivity is shaped by marketing.By reading and thinking together with authors such as Athena Farrokhzad, Mara Lee, James Baldwin, Trinh T. Minh-ha, Anne McClintock, Yahya Hassan, Don Mee Choi, Kristina Lugn, bell hooks and Jennifer Hayashida I examine the power of language, performative assimilation, economic capital, material capital, how accessibility that is said to be accessible is less accessible than we think, and how different class markers can create an illusion of a class belonging to which you do not belong.
Stora lilla världen : Ett hypotetiskt förslag på lekhus till Siljansvägens lekplats, Årsta
No full textVad vi ser på lekplatser i Sverige idag återspeglar inte barns önskan och behov. Lekplatser formas allt för ofta efter vuxnas krav på säkerhet och deras egna önskan om design (Jansson, 2016). Jansson är även medförfattare till boken ”Plats för lek”: Svenska lekplatser förr och nu och menar på att detta bidragit till mer strikta och välplanerade lekplatser, med mindre utrymme för fantasi. I mitt examensarbete vårterminen 2023 på programmet Inredningsarkitektur och möbeldesign, Konstfack har jag valt att skapa tre lekhus till Siljansvägens lekplats i Årsta. Mitt syfte är att genom fältstudier, workshops, intervjuer samt ta del av senaste forskning kring lek och barn, avser detta examensarbete att lyfta vikten av välgestaltad arkitektur och välgestaltade utemiljöer för barn. Syftet är också att undersöka hur vi som inredningsarkitekter kan utforma och bistå med rumsligheter och designelement som kan främja fantasi och kreativitet hos barn. Genom att lyfta forskning om fördelar med fantasifull och utmanande lek samt utforska principerna för lekhusdesign, avser detta examensarbete till att ge insikter som kan informera gestaltare av lekplatser om hur vi kan skapa lekmiljöer som förbättrar barns utveckling och välbefinnande. Lekplatser är en sorts miniatyr av världen där barn ska lära och utvecklas. Låt oss inredningsarktitekter gestalta miljöer som barnen faktiskt vill vara i och som främjar den viktiga leken. Designförslaget som helhet syftar till att uppmuntra till en mer attraktiv och utforskande lek i Årsta. Det vill ge platsen ett förtydligande och samtida gestaltning och samtidigt utmana standardiserande lekstugor som marknanden idag erbjuder.Lekhusens element, färger och former är antingen idéer som jag har kommit fram till tillsammans med barn under workshops, teckningar barn har ritat och skrivit om sina drömlekstugor/kojor och lekplatser eller former från befintlig arkitekturhistoria i Årsta. Min önskan har varit att lekhusen ska kunna knyta an till och spegla områdets bebyggelse, Områdets detaljrikedom i färg och form och genom laborativ gestaltning sammanfogas med detaljer till en lekfull helhet. Jag anser det en viktigt aspekt för att lekhusen ska smälta in och bli spännande när en upptäcker dem, jag har även en föreställning om att barnens fantasi måste ta avstamp utifrån deras erfarenhet om vad de associerar formen med. Jag har velat visa respekt för plastens historia och också en stor respekt för barn och deras behov. Med spännande arkitektoniska detaljer som associerar till platsen, är tanken att barnens inre rika symbolvärld ska göra att de hamnar i fantasins underbara värld. Annorlunda lösningar i form av skalförskjutningar, tunnlar, klättring och oväntade detaljer är tänkta att väcka en vilja att upptäcka, utmana och utforska för varje ny gång som barn och föräldrar besöker platsen. Behoven barnen har just denna dag ska kunna tillgodoses. Barn är de viktigaste! Låt oss främja den viktiga och utvecklande leken.
I want to become a barn
No full textThere is a new order on the farm, the animals are long since gone, new people have moved in. On a farm in Bergslagen, which is also my home, a barn (or lada in Swedish) stands empty. The original function of this barn, to house a small number of cows and their feed, has been lost. Since moving to the farm, we have asked ourselves how it should be used. It is here the project I Want to Become a Barn plays out. In my degree project, I explore how to have a dia-logue with the building and how the barn can be approached by starting from its current condition. The work process is guided by a care for that which has been, where the new has to adapt to the old. The history of the place, the ravages of time, and the forces of gravity are elementary starting points. The project proposes that the building can be made habitable and meet basic everyday needs. When does it stop being a stable for animals and when does it start to become a home for humans

No full textArt education in Åland and Sweden : a comparative study of student participation from curriculum and policy documents in art to practical reality
No full text“Bildämnet på Åland och i Sverige - en komparativ studie av elevdeltagande från läroplan och styrdokument i bild till praktisk verklighet” är en studie jag genomfört för att undersöka hur och vilka faktorer som påverkar elevdeltagande och inflytande i bildundervisningen, samt hur detta skiljer sig åt mellan den svenska och den åländska gymnasieskolan. Studien är genomgående av komparativ karaktär, och genom tre olika analysmetoder av intervjumaterial, läroplan och styrdokument från båda regioner har jag presenterat förslag på utvecklingsområden för bildundervisningen. Jag har fört intervjuer med svenska och åländska gymnasieelever, och de viktigaste resultaten i studien har varit hur elevernas tal om bildundervisningen stått i kontext mot villkoren skrivna i läroplan och styrdokument. Genom läroplansanalys, tematisk analys och kontextualiserande analys har jag presenterat skillnader och likheter från de två olika skolorna. "Art Education in Åland and Sweden - a comparative study of student participation from curriculum and policy documents in art to practical reality" is a study I conducted to investigate the factors that influence student participation and influence in art education, and how this differs between the Swedish and Ålandic high school systems. The study is comparative in nature, and through three different methods of analysis of interview material, curriculum, and policy documents from both regions, I have presented proposals for areas of development for art education. The interviews were conducted with Swedish and Ålandic high school students, and the key findings of the study have been how students' discussions of art education are situated in the context of conditions outlined in the curriculum and policy documents. Through curriculum analysis, thematic analysis, and contextualizing analysis, I have presented differences and similarities between the two different schools.
