An animated short film in which we follow the acorn Acca through her daily routines. We watch her go from young to old and observe how the conditions around her change. The degree project is also an exploration for me in a newfound technique, as well as an examination of how a visual creator can keep their process more sustainable and climate-smart
The Beauty of Repairing and the Human Body : Re-visioning Rituals Through Artificial Intelligence
This thesis raises discussion about the importance of repairing, new urban meeting places and the use of artificial intelligence. Using AI as a tool, I have re-visioned rituals around taking care of ourselves and our objects. When we give a lot of value to the repeated habits of repairing ourselves and our objects, they become like rituals to us, containing a deeper meaning in our lives. The physical context of my project is in the Örnsberg industrial area in Stockholm, at the address Instrumentvägen 21. This area was established in 1938 and still now a lot of carpenters and other kind of industries are located there. For this reason it serves as a natural place to build an urban community dedicated for repairing and sharing knowledge. During my process I have tested new visual artificial intelligence tools that emerged during the past year. I have aimed to find out how we as designers could use AI as a tool to help us in our work and to also find the parts in the process where human intelligence is irreplaceable. Since AI in the current extent is new and there are a lot of questions hanging around it, it is important that us designers try to understand it already now already in its early stages. This thesis is my starting point on that path
Controversial issues in the visual arts education : A study on how visual arts education can enable the development of democratic competences through work with controversial subjects.
1 Skolinspektionen (2022). Since school is a place where young people should have the opportunity to develop democratic knowledge and abilities which, in the long run, should act as a force of resistance against risky and undemocratic behavior, active work with the democratic mission must take place. But the Swedish Schools Inspectorate's latest report shows that 21 out of 30 primary schools in the country are failing in their work with the democratic mission.1 This study intends to investigate how visual arts education, through work with controversial subjects, can develop democratic abilities and skills. As a starting point in the study, students' and young adults' perceived ideas, experiences and thoughts regarding the democratic potential of creative practices and the work with controversial subjects in the subject of visual arts are examined. I have interpreted their answers using discourse analysis as an interpretive framework and theories about which subject positions we take in the meeting with others and dissenters. The results show that the term "controversial" is complex and contextual and something that students shy away from talking about and working with. This seems to be due to a lack of ability to deal with dissent and engage in democratic conversation, mainly out of a fear of what others will think of oneself. It becomes clear that there is a need to work with these subjects because, according to the informants, it can train the ability to cope effectively with dissent, prepare for life after school and practices an ability that everyone shares equal right to learn. It is also evident that image creation is a medium that has a high potential for expressing opinions, waking emotions and making one think. During the process of writing the thesis, I have taken a double perspective where in parallel with writing, I have filmed myself reflecting on the process itself. The filmed reflections have been compiled in the video work Why is the difficult difficult? which was shown at Konstfack's spring exhibition. Ideas that arose during the work were presented at the Visual Arts Education Symposium on Democracy and the Future at the Spring Exhibition at Konstfack 25 May 2023 organized by Belinda Morén, Katarina Seth, Mari Eriksson, Sandrine Samuelsson and Amanda Sammeli. 1 Skolinspektionen (2022). Labor lurking under the surface of glass : Discussion between the visible and invisible
This text is about visibility and invisibility of work and labor through research from history and present time and through my own work, process and thinking. Through these topics I want to raise discussions and make comments in the field of craft and glass. To evoke our senses and feelings through video, sound and perception of the work and installations together with the properties of glass. To discuss that there are underlying layers of a work of glass that we see in a museum or gallery space. Why some information is visible, and some is lost by the presented state. Is the material and finished product that we see more important than the underlying layers and process? Can we change how we present and document our pieces with information better? Together with the labor of my interest, there is also about the loss of an industry and a personal loss of the time I had there coming to an end.
To create oneself free : A research on the connections between liberatory pedagogy and street art and graffiti
Modular head phones : Extended lifespan, reduced climate impact
Currently, electronic waste is posing a growing threat towards the environment. Electronic products are often difficult to recycle efficiently while also consisting of toxic substances and materials. Furthermore, e-waste is today's fastest-growing category of waste. Due to the complexity of recycling e-waste, scientists, designers, and consumers are instead calling for products with longer life spans as a part of the many actions required to solve today's environmental challenges. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to examine and design an original concept of a common e-waste product, over-ear headphones. The modular design aims to enable the product to achieve a higher life expectancy, and therefore less environmental impact, than other currently existing headphones on the market. This bachelor thesis project was made in collaboration with Urbanista. Through interviews and design reviews with their employees, I aimed to broaden my understanding of the headphone as a product and the current headphone market. I also recieved invaluable input on my design propsals from people professionals within the industry. The final prototype consists of two 3D-printed headphones with added textiles. One of prototypes shown in its disassembled state as different modules, and one of them shown as fully assembled. The final design proposal is a concrete example of how modular design can be applied to headphones in order to prolong product life expectancy and therefore lessen the environmental impact these products cause the world today.
In my thesis I have investigated how to design a comfortable seating furniture for public spaces, so that it can be produced and used in a sustainable way. This is particularly important in environments where furniture is worn at a high rate, and where repair is currently not prioritized and furniture is left to decay. In the project, I have worked site-specifically with Stockholm City Library, but designed with the idea that it can fit in several different environments. This degree project presents a proposal on how companies and municipalities can switch to a more circular way of using furniture. The design proposal presented is an alternative to an upholstered armchair. Bind is designed to be produced and used in a sustainable way, so that it can have a long and dignified life and contribute to a circular economy
Architechno - Translating rhythm into room : Method development for how interior architecture can be designed through music
This degree project in interior architecture and furniture design at Konstfack, explores and develops methods for how interior architecture can be designed based on music. Through practice-based studies, the project analyzes subjective experiences of music, which components that exist and how the music is structured. Studies that creates frames for the interior designer to relate to in a design process. Not as limitations, but as an interface that welcomes alternative ways of working and investigates new design possibilities. Based on a selected piece of music, a translation into interior is created of the music and experiences it generates. The project iterates between music theory, studies of subjective experiences and color, light and material exploration. The result is a proposal for methods created for analyzing and studying spatiality in relation to music, but also a design proposal based on this method development. An example of a translation of one medium into another, which in itself becomes an independent work. Rhythm, darkness and light form a temporal experience together. A piece of music becomes an interior in a long, narrow room, where the light comes into focus between two layers of walls, with elements of surprises represented in colored light, surface color or material
Weaving past into present
WEAVING PAST INTO PRESENT revolves around contradictory feelings towards, on the one hand, the lure of a mythic past, and on the other hand its absurdity and potential danger. This is done by stating that craft and weaving is inherently conservative, closely connected to nostalgia and claimed as something more authentic and pristine. In continuation used in the creation of an idealized and romanticized past generating a separation between an “us and them”. These problems are created by the main quest and question of this work, to weave the past into present and then ask; which past is woven into the present presence of the tapestries? The paper then continues to describe the methods and considerations used and made in this time-translation. Looking at the sketch and the collage as ways of materializing and enmeshing the transient flow of time through cacophonies of ephemera and threads. Concluding that I, just as the ones creating mythic pasts, am not weaving a past at all. But merely weaving a sketch trying to highlight the feeling and fear of loss apparent today in encountering the accelerated present, the eerie future, and the desirable progressive changes towards equalityWEAVING PAST INTO PRESENT rör sig kring motsägelsefulla känslor gentemot å ena sidan, lockelsen i ett mytiskt förflutet, och å andra sidan dess absurditet och potentiella fara.
