From A to B to Z
I’m looking for letters. It’s a little like learning how to read, suddenly there are signs to decipher everywhere. In the asphalt, in the trees, in the fences, in the paving stones. I gather what I find along the road. Everything is or can become a letter. mellanaochb.co
Ripples : The Interplay of Surface and Perception
This degree project, “Ripples,” explores the dynamic interplay of reflections in urban environments, focusing on how natural elements like puddles can transform the spatial experience and perception within these settings. Situated within the field of spatial design, this project emphasizes the potential of reflective surfaces to enrich urban spaces, making them more engaging and adaptable to environmental changes. The importance of “Ripples” lies in its ability to enhance urban livability and ecological awareness by integrating artfully designed reflective elements into everyday spaces. This approach addresses contemporary challenges such as increased rainfall and climate change, demonstrating how design can play a crucial role in urban sustainability and resilience. The project was conducted through a series of experiments and installations in diverse settings, including the Telefonplan tunnel and a controlled exhibition space at Konstfack. Using phenomenological methods alongside practical tools such as walking analyses and sensory observations, the project explored the effects of reflections caused by different materials and lighting conditions. Artistic interpretations through watercolour painting were also employed to conceptualize reflections abstractly, further enriching the study. Conclusions from “Ripples” suggest that thoughtful design interventions can significantly alter public engagement and enhance spatial perception, making everyday environments not only more aesthetically pleasing but also more responsive to human emotions and environmental factors. The project’s implications extend into future design practices, advocating for the integration of reflective surfaces in urban planning to foster environments that are not only functional but also inspirational, paving the way for a reflective future in urban design
Gjenskinn : et tegneserieprosjekt
Gjenskinn is a graphic novel about feeling stuck, and the attempt to walk it off. The comic follows the young student Mia as she leaves her apartment around midnight to go buy snacks, ending up on a trip that is both longer and more social than planned. Exploring themes of melancholia through excessive overthinking and awkward conversations, Gjenskinn tries to put images to feelings it's hard to put words to. It is a story about finding your way back (from the store), told with both humor and seriousness.
Forget-Me-Not
Forget-Me-Not tells the story of my grandmother’s life as she shares the challenges of growing up in Poland during wartime, reflecting on the closeness of family and treasured traditions passed down through generations. Through tales and songs, she shares profound joy and a sense of belonging found in life’s simple moments. This book is a tribute to the countless women who have lovingly crafted and preserved cultural traditions for generations to come. Ornamental culture, often a source of belonging, is intentionally erased from people’s lives, robbing them of their identity. I started my visual exploration with research inspired by my grandmother’s stories and songs about feminism, folklore, and the powerful role of decoration. Through typography, posters, and bold colours, I explore my Polish cultural heritage

Developing haptic attribute models as creative instruments for a hybrid food design community
Interest in haptic perception is growing within the food design community due to the expanding knowledge of multi-sensory experiences across the design spectrum. Our aim was to investigate how haptic perception can be explored, defined and illustrated by interweaving our professional experiences and methods that reflect creative strategies from our aesthetic disciplines: industrial design, culinary arts and hospitality. We developed and conducted a series of practice-based research methods starting with three playful ‘aesthetic labs’ (A-labs), followed by the ‘five basic features-method’ (FBF). This resulted in unfolding four distinct ‘haptic attribute models’: the first three are designed for the ‘hand’, ‘mouth’ and ‘nose’ with the gestalt intention to ‘make’, and the fourth model is designed to guide an ‘embodied presence’ session to facilitate ‘awareness’. The configuration and definition of attributes in each model relate to each author’s professional experiences and emotions, which strengthen the connection between our respective aesthetic disciplines. The models serve as creative instruments to inspire a hybrid food design community for food and non-food applications and support practitioners, educators and researchers interested in haptics. We are dedicated to prototype new haptic attribute models to support research in haptics that are rooted in professional subjective experiences and facilitate ways of connecting disciplines within and beyond the field of aesthetics. We invite readers to share insights gained from applying these models to further their development and relevance
