Urban Memories : Time, Place and Emotion in a street tapestry
No full text“Urban Memories” encapsulates a personal journey in Berlin. This master's thesis embarks on a captivating exploration of the fluidity of home and the passage of time in the vibrant urban landscape. Spanning the years 2007 to 2022, the streets of the city serve as both canvas and storyteller, capturing the transient nature of homes and the fragility of moments. Through the innovative medium of embroidery, fragments from a personal diary in 2012 intertwine with literary insights from German authors in different eras such as Christa Wolf, Dörte Hansen, and Jenny Erpenbeck. The narrative unfolds across four chapters, each delving into different facets of the author's experiences and reflections. Looking at historical aspect like the reconstruction of Berlin after World War II and the symbolic significance of disappearing houses, the thesis explores the profound connection between memory and location. It navigates through temporal contexts, examining societal attitudes and the evolving spirit of Berlin across different eras. The thesis also dives into the art of crafting stories, drawing parallels between textile craft and comic drawing. In the final chapter, it explores street art's role in shaping public spaces, highlighting the transformative potential of embroidery. As banners flutter on construction site fences and embroidered memories find a place in the public realm, the thesis invites contemplation on the intersections of art, memory, and the evolving identity of the city. Through this interdisciplinary exploration, the thesis weaves a tapestry that not only captures personal experiences but reflects the collective memory of a dynamic and ever-changing city
Smedjan : ett programförslag för den samtida gallerian som innebär en transformation utav den traditionella
No full textGallerian i Eskilstuna centrum genomgår förändringar i linje med den omvandlingsresa som dagens centrumhandel ofta står inför. Måste en galleria vara ägnad åt konsumtion? Liksom många städer är Eskilstuna drabbat av handelsförändringen, vilket lämnar stadskärnan ödslig med många igenbommade lokaler. Utanför Eskilstuna drivs Retuna, som arbetar med upcycling och återbruk av saker som slängs på den intilliggande återvinningscentralen. Här råder platsbrist då det ständigt fylls på med spillmaterial från byggbranschen. Hit åker många eskilstunabor både för att slänga skräp och för att handla begagnade varor. Intill Retuna ligger Eskilstuna Folkhögskola som erbjuder kurser i återbruk och upcycling av materialet som lämnats in. Smedjan är ett programförslag för en skaparverkstad i Eskilstunas citygalleria. Med byggspillet från återvinningscentralen vid Retuna, och med inspiration från Eskilstuna Folkhögskolas utbildning i upcycling och återbruk, innebär programförslaget en etablering av en ny kreativ mötesplats i centrum. Projektet syftar till att reaktivera Eskilstunas stadskärna och återuppliva gallerian genom att prioritera social hållbarhet framför handel. Idén är att här ska workshops och kurser hållas i en miljö där material från återvinningscentralen används både i utformningen av lokalen och som huvudmaterial under workshops. Smedjan ska både vara en mötesplats för gemensamt skapande, samt vara en plats för kursdeltagarna från Eskilstuna Folkhögskola att visa upp hur de arbetar med upcycling och återbruk på en tillgänglig och central plats i centrum som når ut till en bred publik. Smedjan ska främst vara för kursdeltagarna, men syftar även till att nå ut till personer som rör sig på torget, förhoppningen är att detta ska öka intresset för hantverk, återbruk och material, och på så sätt leda till fler kursdeltagare. Eskilstuna kommun stävar efter att vara en grön förebild och med Retuna har staden fått mycket uppmärksamhet ur ett miljöperspektiv. Med Smedjan som en kreativ mötesplats i stan främjas en mer livlig galleria i stadskärnan för eskilstunaborna och för folk som besöker staden. Eskilstuna kommun får ytterligare en verksamhet som går i hand med deras strävan efter att vara en grön förebild, samt rimmar med vad en galleria kan vara i vår samtid. För att realisera projektet och för att kunna utforma ett programförslag har jag använt olika metoder inom inredningsarkitekur och möbeldesign, såsom platsanalys av torg och gallerian, samt av Retuna och återvinningscentralen. Jag har utfört intervjuer med centrumledare för gallerian, Lennart Berg, samt VD för Retuna, Simon Glimtoft. Genom att identifiera och samla ihop material som är typiska för att bli överblivet efter byggen, och som riskerar att hamna på återvinningscentralen, har jag under workshops med ihopsamlat material undersökt vilka möjligheter som finns och vad man skulle kunna bygga under en workshop i Smedjan. Detta utforskas även digitalt i Rhino och moduleras upp till volymer utifrån de identifierade materialens standardmått för att få bredare kunskap i vad som är möjligt att bygga. Baserat på stadsplaneringen och de geografiska förhållandena mellan Retuna och återvinningscentralen, beläget utanför stan, och gallerian i stadskärnan, har jag undersökt materialflödena mellan platserna. Genom att analysera ritningar av hela gallerian och ta hänsyn till det redan befintliga, och den logistik som finns i byggnaden idag, har jag avgränsat ytan för projektet Smedjan. Ovannämnda metoder ligger till grund för konceptet kring program. Genom metoderna har jag utformat ett programförslag med funktioner och zonindelningar för Smedjan. Jag har tagit fram ett planförslag med möblerad planritning över verkstäderna, detta visas även i en fysisk modell av byggnaden

No full textdesign_destruct is a look at industrial design education, straight from the source; it tries to understand the relationship between conscious, radical intentions and the continued embrace of a status quo that upholds and deepens structures of destruction. it focuses in on corporate collaborations as a central culprit to this acceptance, and encourages design to be a tool to build for a structurally sustainable world, instead of the world as it is (and physically, socially, and environmentally can't continue to be). it is a call to action, to question, to reject and to refuse, and to protest. the knowledge gained—both through and despite the education—is turned against the structures we are taught to fit into, resulting in a collection of designs that use text, typography, space and form to educate and mobilise
Kackel och kulör : Gestaltningsförslag för kreativ mötesplats på Årsta torg
No full textIn my thesis project, 2024, Konstfack’s Bachelor program in Interior Architecture and Furniture Design, I present a hypothetical proposal for transforming a space in Årsta torg in Stockholm. Through research, site analysis, and examination of Årsta torgs’s color palette, I have created the project Kackel och Kulör. Many spaces in urban areas are facing a transformation, where commercial businesses are affected by new trends and rent out their spaces to new types of tenants. I have chosen Årsta torg to propose a transformation that I believe many similar places in the city could benefit from. Kackel och Kulör is a design concept for a space in Årsta torg. The concept revolves around the production of egg tempera paint, an ancient painting technique that involves mixing eggs, linseed oil, pigment, and water. With hens as honored guests and egg producers, this place is created for the local community to gather in the color workshop, the hen coops, or the small shop. The space is for those who want to learn to make their own paint, repaint their furniture, feed the hens, or buy painting supplies and eggs. The presence of the hens contributes to a local cycle and creates a vibrant hub for creativity and community engagement in Årsta. Inspired by the color scheme of the square, a colorful space for knowledge exchange is created, contributing to a local and social cycle in Årsta torg
Submerged Wetlands : A speculative design proposal to reduce cyanobacterial bloom in Mälaren
No full textIn the Anthropocene era, human intervention has significantly transformed our environment, blurring the lines between the natural and artificial. This project places an emphasis on this viewpoint in environmental philosophy, and its role in the practise of the industrial designer. Drawing on research of two science advisors and their findings, the focus of Submerged Wetlands is to create a small-scale design of an artificial wetland, that works to mitigate cyanobacterial bloom, a growing phenomena caused by climate change, specifically agricultural nutrient runoff and global warming.The material choices,, the plant Juncus Repens as an acting low-tech filter to remove excess nutrients, the choise of reed grass and the consideration of what people and space the design interact with, comes out of natural fieldwork, interviews, lab tests and excursions to institutions. In submerged wetlands, the properties of marinal vegetation are being speculatively utilized in a design proposal to construct submerged gardens under buoys in recreational areas around the lake Mälaren in Stockholm. These areas are subject to cyanobacterial blooms, commonly referred to as algae bloom, which pose a threat to humans and aquatic species. Together eith a body of scientific research on wetlands, soil and ccyanobacterial blooms, the designed solution submerged wetlands takes into account the spectator's need for a third place, their emotional disposition towards the climate crisis and presents a demonstrative and accessible formation in the form of an artificial wetland

No full textDenna studie undersöker graffitimålares upplevelser och användning av tags som en del av deras identitetsskapande och kreativa process. Med en kvalitativ ansats, inklusive semistrukturerade intervjuer och analys av visuellt material, utforskar studien hur tags fungerar som både personliga signaturer och subkulturella uttryck. Genom att integrera fenomenografi och hermeneutik analyseras variationen i graffitimålares perspektiv och de djupare meningar som deras berättelser rymmer. Resultaten visar att tags inte bara fungerar som estetiska och sociala uttryck, utan också som verktyg för självreflektion och dialog i både individuella och kollektiva sammanhang. Graffitins potential som ett pedagogiskt verktyg framträder också tydligt, särskilt dess roll i att stimulera kritiskt tänkande och utforskande av normer. Studien bidrar till en djupare förståelse för graffitins kulturella och pedagogiska betydelse genom att lyfta fram graffitimålares reflektioner kring sina tags. Resultaten antyder att tags är dynamiska uttryck som förenar kreativ frihet med social interaktion och identitetsförhandling
Världens Vackraste Väntrum : Om livet, döden och rummen där emellan
No full textDeath remains one of the few mysteries untouched by humanity’s relentless pursuit of knowledge. While science can describe the biological processes that occur before and after death, it cannot yet unravel the deeper significance of this universal phenomenon. This essay explores the spaces between life and death through my artistic practice, focusing on themes of grief, mortality, nature and our relationship with non-human animals and all organic matter. It has emerged from an ecological world view as well as my personal experiences of mourning. I examine the anthropocentric worldview that places humans at the center and compare it with an ecocentric perspective that views all life as equally valuable. In the essay, this will be portrayed through the works I've created during my years at Konstfack as well as through different exhibitions and text based works. Through my work, I question the ethical dilemmas surrounding the use of animal remains as material. By working with elements such as wool, bones, teeth, and wood, I aim to highlight the inherent value and histories embedded in these materials. My practice invites dialogue between myself and the materials, acknowledging both the animal as well as the remains as individuals with their own narratives.

Gummo, Garfield, The Residents, Hyperlink Cinema har varit stora inspirationskällor i detta sökande där olika genrer och tekniker möter varandra för att visa något nytt och större och hur ensamheten blir mindre när kommunikationsvägarna öppnas
Spatial Translations : An exploration through the generative possibilities of point cloud scanning
No full textSpatial Translations (Rum i översättning) explores how point cloud scanning, a new technical tool for spatial documentation, also has the possibility to be generative in a new design process within interior architecture and furniture design. The tool has streamlined the process of gathering spatial information and provides a detailed digital basis for further designing. I believe that all tools and materials that the architect uses, affect the design work in different ways. This project explores how this new type of digital material, with a greater amount of spatial information and interpretations, actively can influence further design that takes place in the scanned space. The constant development of technical and virtual means within the profession has a major impact on future architecture and the built environment around us. It is important to increase the understanding of the technology as well as to be critical and innovative about its impact and possibilities in a creative practice. The investigation of the technology is explored theoretically and practically in different spatial contexts as well as in digital manipulations of the information. Spatial Translations is inspired by colleagues, such as Interiors Matter, who have used point cloud scanning in other projects. This project tests and takes on similar explorations and materialization methods, but in a different context and implemented design. In the practical examination of the digital information, interesting misscans and spatial manipulations are found. These errors are the scanners perception of the rooms and occurs through various spatial challenges it was faced with. The project concludes that the technology offers a large amount of detailed digital and spatial material that is inspiring in many ways for new developments of ideas in further design processes
