No full textAv jord är vi komna, av jord ska vi åter bli. Mellan dessa båda stadier av vår existens strävar jag efter att skapa design som går bortom normer för formgivning av rum och interiör. I mitt examensarbete i kandidatprogrammet Inred- ningsarkitektur och möbeldesign Konstfack 2024 gestaltar och föreslår jag en bänk, som placerats i en av basarlängorna vid arkitekten Gunnar Asplunds stads- bibliotek vid Observatorielunden. Social hållbarhet, biofiliska och neurovetenskapiska perspektiv, mellan- mänskliga möten och att utforska gränser mellan inne/ ute är centralt i projektet. Vi har vårt ursprung i naturen och lever i symbios med den men våra moderna livsstilar har i mångt och mycket kopplat bort oss från naturen, i synnerhet i tätbebyggda områden. Det är därför mitt projekt utgår ifrån begreppet biofili; insikten om att vi mår bäst när vi känner oss sammanlänkade med naturen. Då en central del av projektet har varit att undersöka gränsen mellan inne/ute så har konceptet jordning varit en utgångspunkt i just formsökandet för att undersöka gränsen mellan inne/ute. Jordning innebär att direkt- kontakt med jordens elektronfält har en vetenskapligt bevisad antioxidantisk och antiinflammatorisk effekt på kroppen. Jag har studerat specifika exempel och referenser från arkitekt Gunnar Asplunds arbete som även om det inte var uttalat harmoniserade med principer inom neu- rodesign och biofilisk design. Platsen jag placerar mitt förslag på är en del av hans ritningar för lokaler och parkmiljöer runt Stockholmstadsbibliotek på Sveavägen byggt 1928. I designförslaget ”Stötta” har jag materialiserat mina idéer och studier i en bänk som genom sin form, funk- tion och placering kan öppna upp samtal om stödjande design och bidra till att skapa förutsättningar för en hållbar framtid i våra inomhusmiljöer. Genom att in- tegrera mina idéer och studier till bänkens utformning strävar jag efter att vara en del i att ge besökarna på platsen nödvändiga förutsättningar för välbefinnande. Mitt förslag inkluderar att lokalen övergår från att vara en snabbmatsrestaurang till att bli en integrerad del av bibliotekets faciliteter och därmed bli ett offentligt rum tillgängligt för allmänheten. Ashes to ashes and dust to dust. Between these two stages of our existence, I strive to create designs that go beyond the norms of spatial and interior design. In my thesis for the Bachelor's program in Interior Architecture and Furniture Design at Konstfack 2024, I conceptualize and propose a bench, placed in one of the arcades at architect Gunnar Asplund's city library at Observatorielunden. Social sustainability, biophilic and neuroscientific perspectives, interpersonal interactions, and exploring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors are central to the project. We originate from nature and live in symbiosis with it, but our modern lifestyles have largely disconnected us from nature, especially in densely built areas. Therefore, my project is based on the concept of biophilia; the realization that we feel best when we feel connected to nature. Since a central part of the project has been to explore the boundary between indoors and outdoors, the concept of grounding has been a starting point in the design process to explore this boundary. Grounding means that direct contact with the Earth's electric field has a scientifically proven antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect on the body. I have studied specific examples and references from architect Gunnar Asplund's work which, although not explicitly stated, harmonized with principles within neurodesign and biophilic design. The place I situate my proposal is part of his drawings for the premises and park environments around the Stockholm City Library on Sveavägen, built in 1928. In the design proposal "Stötta" (Support), I have materialized my ideas and studies in a bench that, through its form, function, and placement, can open up conversations about supportive design and contribute to creating conditions for a sustainable future in our indoor environments. By integrating my ideas and studies into the bench's design, I strive to be part of providing visitors at the location with the necessary conditions for well-being. My proposal includes transforming the premises from a fast-food restaurant into an integrated part of the library's facilities, thereby becoming a public space accessible to everyone.

No full textGurra is primarily an attempt to both engage and foster appreciation of the locale. The project looks at Gustavsbergsteatern, a theatre and cultural centre located in Gustavsberg,20 km east of Stockholm. The area is undergoing extensive redevelopment, which will include new housing, schools and a cultural centre. Meanwhile, historic buildings in thearea are being privatised and parts of the cultural heritage, that cannot be commercialised, forgotten. To solve this, the foyer and entrance have been redesigned to highlight the building’s historic and cultural importance, as well as its presence in the local community. Through conversation, material research and design, I have deepened my own understanding of the site in both time (its history) and space (present geography and functions), and Gurra attempts to translate this personal connection into an act of material consolidation to strengthen the theatre’s position as an anchor institution and place. Underpinning this intervention is a novel approach to renovation and material, which conceives physical renovation as static performance linked to the site’s cultural heritage. This will result in a new activation of the place, an expansion of its use, and the creation of a space which evolves with its users, therefore encouraging activity and change

No full textIn the project Weave me through a dream I explore how textile craft, specifically tapestry weaving, can help create a more creative environment when caring for elders with dementia, and what the benefits with this can be. The research was done in collaboration with a nursing home in Stockholm, where I previously worked as a care assistant. This paper discusses and examines gathered research material combined with experiences from the care assistant job. In the process the project transformed from the therapeutic aspect of craft towards caring through craft in social engagement. The exhibited physical work is an interpretation of interactions at the nursing home. The tapestry can be used as discussion material concerning dementia care. My research concludes that weaving in dementia care was beneficial for the residents I met. My conclusion is also that a more creative environment within dementia care can strengthen staff and relatives affecting the residents in a positive way. The project Weave me through a dream hopes to open up the image of dementia and strengthen the relationship between residents, staff and relatives through creative care
Designing for Circularity : Towards a Bioeconomy

The study focuses on developing a circular bio-economy system that integrates local mycelium cultures for material decomposition and soil regeneration. The central research question is: How can industrial design practices evolve to foster ecological regeneration while maintaining economic viability? Key findings emphasize the importance of closing material loops and reimagining industrial processes to harmonize with ecological systems. The Catifa Carta project, a collaboration with the Italian furniture brand Arper, serves as a case study demonstrating the practical application and success of these principles. Future research directions include exploring the scalability of these practices and additional ecological partnerships
State of Day : A design proposal for an alternative watch.

The thesis presents a design proposal for an alternative watch that through unconventional methods uses natural light to gradually reveal the passage of time. Furthermore, design research includes observations of and interactions with other-than humans (such as the Calathea plant and a Spiral Grained Tree) and their relation to time and light. Underlying the two main themes is the topic of mental health and stress-related illness that has rapidly increased in Sweden over the past few years

No full textStudien syftar till att undersöka vilka aspekter som gör att ungdomar från ett så kallat utsatt område väljer eller väljer bort det estetiska programmet. Således är frågeställningarna: Vilka aspekter gör att ungdomar i ett så kallat utsatt område väljer att gå på estetiska programmet? Samt vilka aspekter gör att andra ungdomar i samma bostadsområde väljer bort att gå på estetiska programmet trots intresse? Empirin är insamlad genom semistrukturerade intervjuer med gymnasieungdomar inom ramen för en geografisk plats, ett utsatt område. Det har sedan analyserats utifrån en utbildningssociologisk begreppsram med komplettering av Critical Race Theory. Tematisk analys har använts som analysmetod och de kärnämnen som har identifierats är: att sträva efter en trygg framtid, att vilja vara en del av gruppen, att känna att man inte passar in och att bo i ett så kallat utsatt område. Resultatet visar på att de aspekter som påverkat ungdomarnas val är ungdomarnas bostadsområde och normer som finns där, grupptillhörighet och gruppidentitet, område där de gått i skolan, föräldrars tidigare yrkesliv, sociala nätverk och förebilder och historia av mikroagression som internaliserats
Designing for Death in a Divided Future : Highlighting a Dichotomy of how to navigate the Anthropocene
No full textThis thesis, “Designing for Death in a Divided Future,” by Hillevi Hesseldahl, is a speculative design project which explores the ideological dichotomy in addressing climate crises within the Anthropocene epoch. The study highlights two major frameworks: Posthumanism together with Anthroposophy, advocating for a harmonious integration with nature, and Transhumanism together with Eco-Realism, emphasizing technological solutions and a geologial separation between human and wild ecosystems. The project uses speculative design to visualize future death rites, presenting two contrasting scenarios for Stockholm in 2050. The first scenario, “Gaian Sympoiesis,” envisions a society deeply connected with nature, employing local, community-based solutions. Here, death rites involve the “Vessel of Return,” an urn designed to return human essence to the earth, symbolizing a cyclical view of life. The second scenario, “Cybernetic Ascendancy,” portrays a technologically advanced society where humans withdraw from nature, relying on digital innovation and conservation of natural habitats. This scenario introduces the “Orb of Descendancy,” a digital artifact encapsulating a deceased person’s life data, reflecting a rational, data-driven approach to memorialization. By examining these speculative futures, the thesis sheds light on current ideological divides and the potential impacts of our choices on the trajectory of human civilization. This project combines artistic methods, personal interviews, and design theories to create tangible representations of possible futures, aiming to foster a deeper understanding of the present and stimulate discourse on navigating the Anthropocene
“The tiny scales on the legs” : a post-qualitative study of multispecies inclusivity in art education
No full textDet finns forskning som pekar på hur barn i vårt samhälle under vuxenblivandet fostras till att ta avstånd från andra arter och inta ett alltmer människocentrerat förhållningssätt till världen. Detta sker även i skolan som ofta vidmakthåller antropocentriska föreställningar. “De små fjällen på benen” är en postkvalitativ studie där forskaren ställer sig frågan: Hur möjliggörs artinkluderande arbete i bildundervisning? och söker svaren genom att besöka en anpassad grundskola tillsammans med sin kompanjon Cornelius - en sköldpadda. Dessa besök är uppdelade i tre moment - presentation/ett första möte, workshop och efterföljande intervjuer/intravjuer med några av barnen. Empirin bearbetas och analyseras med postkvalitativa metoder, tillsammans med teoretiker som Karen Barad och Donna Haraway. Studien rör sig under tidens gång mot ett alltmer tydligt post-antropocentriskt perspektiv och forskaren ska komma att ifrågasätta sina egna metoder. Därför görs även forskarens personliga “resa” synlig parallellt då det är ett grundantagande i postkvalitativ metodologi att forskaren ständigt påverkar och påverkas av det/de beforskade. Analys sker genom diffraktiva läsningar av den bearbetade empirin från skolbesöken och följs upp av konstnärliga diffraktiva läsningar, som resulterar i ett tredelat verk i bearbetad akrylplast som ställs ut på Konstfacks vårutställning 2024. Avslutningsvis kan studien presentera signifikanta händelser och genom dessa händelser visa på möjliga ingångar till att arbeta artinkluderande i bildundervisningen. Spoiler alert: kroki är inte en av dessa möjliga ingångar.
