Navigating Sustainability: Reducing Single-Use Plastics in FMCG Warehouse Operations

    No full text
ABSTRACT  Background: Single-use plastics (SUPs) remain prevalent in Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) secondary and tertiary packaging within warehouse operations, an area receiving less research attention than primary packaging despite significant environmental impact. European regulations increasingly target plastic reduction in these applications.  Purpose: This study examines operational strategies and environmental challenges in reducing SUPs in secondary and tertiary packaging of FMCG products within warehouse operations in Europe . Method: Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten supply chain professionals from various FMCG companies in Europe, with the data analysed thematically.  Findings: Five key operational strategies were identified: reusable packaging systems, material substitution, automation and technology, packaging design optimization, and standard operating procedures. Environmental challenges included waste management difficulties, carbon footprint concerns, workplace contamination, packaging security requirements, and cost constraints.  Conclusion: While companies implement various strategies to reduce SUPs, a fundamental tension exists between operational needs and sustainability goals. Successful implementation requires process adaptation, equipment investment, and staff training, but offers potential competitive advantages through improved resource efficiency, regulatory compliance, and brand reputation

    No full text
The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is the European Union's latest addition to its Green Deal, aimed at combating climate change by regulating the import of products linked to deforestation. Through this regulation, the EU seeks to reduce global deforestation. Despite its promising goals, the EUDR has received strong criticism for its unilateral nature, particularly from Brazil, one of the countries most associated with deforestation due to cattle pasture expansion and soybean cultivation, and heavily affected by its implementation. This qualitative study examines how the EUDR is likely to affect Brazil’s cattle and soy value chains, based on interviews with relevant stakeholders. Our findings show that adapting to the regulation's due diligence requirements demands significant technical and financial resources. This tends to favor large-scale producers over smallholders, placing the latter in an even more vulnerable position. Several interviewees also voiced concern that the regulation may not lead to an actual reduction in deforestation, but instead shift the problem, either through diversion to other markets with lower sustainability standards or through increased land conversion in biomes not classified as forests under the EUDR, such as the Cerrado. While some respondents acknowledged that the regulation marks an important step toward global forest protection, others questioned its fairness and legitimacy. To explore this further, the study applies the concept of climate imperialism to analyze whether the EUDR reinforces unequal structures in global environmental governance. The study concludes that the EUDR reflects a broader trend of unilateral climate governance, where the Global North sets the terms and the Global South bears the burden of compliance.

This thesis examines the dynamics of international cooperation in disaster risk reduction (DRR) within Guatemala City's informal urban settlements. Despite being one of the most disaster-prone areas, structural, political, and socioeconomic obstacles frequently hinder Guatemala's preparedness efforts. This study examines how disaster preparedness funding reaches vulnerable communities and how much local knowledge, and community engagement are incorporated into DRR strategies using a qualitative methodology that includes semi-structured interviews with representatives from NGOs, UN agencies, government institutions, and community leaders, in addition to field observations. The study maps stakeholder interactions and identifies issues with fund allocation, governance, and access using the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and Actor-Network Theory as analytical lenses. The findings point out a complex aid environment, community engagement strategies in disaster preparedness, and a lack of incorporating local perspectives into decision-making. The impact and inclusivity of DRR initiatives are decreased when stakeholders avoid at-risk communities, even though some exhibit robust partnerships and funding flows.

Dialogic Literature Discussions – A Path Toward Broadened Perspectives? : A Design Study on the Possibility of Developing Students' Perspective-Taking Through Dialogic Literature Discussions.

Making room for change: Student Associations' Engagement in Sustainability : The Case of Jönköping University

    No full text
This thesis explores the current presence of sustainability within student associations at Jönköping University (JU). Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are seen as key agents for promoting sustainable mindsets and behaviours. Student associations, as informal learning environments positioned between the university and students, offer unique potential for creating lasting sustainable change. Research in this area is still underdeveloped. This research aims to assess the current perception of sustainability within JU’s student associations and identify pathways for development. Employing a constructivist approach, the study is a case study focused exclusively on Jönköping University. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 board members from student associations, to explore how sustainability is understood, prioritized, and implemented from their perspective. The qualitative interview data was analysed using thematic analysis, guided by the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) Framework and Stakeholder Theory.  Key findings indicate that associations generally emphasize inclusivity and diversity, although the disconnect between Swedish and international students remains a prevailing issue. Environmental sustainability is considered, with practices like reuse being adopted, but implementation is inconsistent. Economic sustainability is primarily understood as careful spending, with low awareness of ethical or sustainable procurement and decisions often based on cost and convenience. Students are considered the primary stakeholders, and internal decisions are largely inclusive and democratic. Although policies are publicly accessible, awareness and perceived practicality are low. The main barriers to advancing sustainability are a lack of time and a lack of concrete knowledge and ideas, rather than financial constraints. Additionally, boards typically feel they are "sufficiently sustainable." Despite these challenges, there is a strong openness to external support and concrete opportunities for improvement were identified. Suggestions include developing practical tools like a handbook or checklist, providing centralized resources, campus-wide incentives, improving policy accessibility, and promoting peer-to-peer learning. In conclusion, the study highlights that while JU student associations have positive steps in social sustainability, environmental and economic aspects require more systematic integration. Moving forward requires accessible resources, practical guidance, and incentives from the university and student union to overcome identified barriers and shift sustainability from an optional consideration to a core principle

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are among the leading causes of death worldwide and are influenced by several factors, including chronic inflammation and lifestyle habits. Associations have been found between oral health and systemic conditions such as abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), where periodontitis may contribute to systemic inflammation. Aim: This pilot study aimed to investigate and compare the prevalence and severity of periodontitis, as well as oral health behaviors and tobacco use, among individuals with and without AAA. Method: The study included 80 male participants with a mean age of ≥65 years, of whom 18 were diagnosed with AAA. Clinical periodontal parameters (plaque index, bleeding on probing, pocket depth, clinical attachment loss) and questionnaire data on toothbrushing frequency, interdental cleaning, and smoking habits were collected. Results: Individuals with AAA had a significantly higher prevalence of severe periodontitis compared to those without AAA (p = 0.001). No statistically significant differences were found between the groups regarding toothbrushing, interdental cleaning, or tobacco use. Conclusion: The results showed a potential association between AAA and severe periodontitis. The pilot study includes a limited number of participants, the results should be interpreted with caution and understood in relation to the study’s restricted scope.

Policy Without Promise? : A Panel Study of Non-Transferable Paternity Leave and the Gender Wage Gap across Europe (2000-2022)

    No full text
In response to the remaining wage gap, many European countries have implemented non-transferable paternity leave that is exclusive for fathers, as a policy aim to redistribute caregiving responsibilities and possibly reduce gender career interruptions. This thesis therefore investigates the association of non-transferable paternity leave on the gender wage gap across 26 European countries between 2000 and 2022 using aggregated panel data with random effects. To explore whether non-transferable paternity leave might influence the wage gap through a more indirect mechanism, the analysis also examines a set of potential indirect pathways. While these indirect associations are largely statistically insignificant in the fully specified model, a few variables such as male and female tertiary education and male part-time employment show notable patterns. Although these indirect pathways do not appear to have a strong influence on the wage gap, they highlight the complexity of gendered labor dynamics. Rather than offering straightforward answers, these findings suggest that non-transferable paternity leave alone may not be sufficient to shift wage outcomes without broader institutional and cultural changes

The rainbow in the cis-heteronormative shadow : A qualitative interview study on Swedish organizations’ work with violence in LGBTQI+ people’s relationships

    No full text
LGBTQI+ people are subjected to similar or higher rates of intimate partner violence than heterosexual women and men, but the Swedish support systems for victims of violence rarely targets towards LGBTQI+ people. Previous research shows that LGBTQI+ people who are victims of intimate partner violence are met with inadequate support and heteronormative presumptions of what violence is. The purpose of this study is to investigate how heteronormativity affects Swedish non-profit organizations, social services and municipalities who work with intimate partner violence, thus meeting or working with LGBTQI+ victims of violence. Furthermore, the purpose is to examine which factors affect the work with LGBTQI+ victims of violence in Sweden. Finally, we seek to understand which routines and measures develop the work with LGBTQI+ people who are victims of intimate partner violence. The study has been conducted through semi-structured qualitative interviews with professionals, drawing conclusions from the queer theoretical framework. The results show that there are substantial flaws in the work of Swedish organizations who meet LGBTQI+ victims of partner violence, due to a lack of competence and education among the working professionals and within the organizations. Furthermore, the study highlights that heteronormative assumptions are deeply rooted in the organizations, which can marginalize LGBTQI+ victims of violence.
