The Impact of ESG on Corporate Bond Yields: Empirical Evidence from the Nordic Markets
This thesis aims to explore the impact of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance on corporate bond yields in the Nordic markets, focusing on Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark. That is since they rank among the highest in the global leaderboards when it comes to ESG performance. While ESG pillars appear to become an increasingly important factor in financial markets, their influence on fixed-income investments remains underexplored in this region. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating whether higher ESG scores are associated with lower corporate bond yields. The study uses a dataset of 460 fixed-coupon bonds issued by 47 firms. The research applies Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression with cluster-robust standard errors to answer the research question How does ESG performance affect corporate bond yields in the Nordic markets? The analysis includes the control variables credit risk, modified duration, coupon rate, green bonds, and issuer type. A stepwise regression approach was used, adding the control variables one at a time to evaluate how the relationship between ESG performance and corporate bond yields changed with the inclusion of additional control variables. Furthermore, the main analysis was conducted using a symmetrically trimmed model to address outliers and enhance robustness and validity. The empirical findings demonstrate a negative correlation between ESG performance and corporate bond yields, suggesting that greater ESG performance is associated with lower corporate bond yields in the Nordic markets. Moreover, the findings suggest that firms with stronger ESG performance benefit from lower cost of debt, likely due to reduced perceived risk among investors. The findings can be interpreted through the lens of stakeholder theory and signaling theory, aligning with the risk-return tradeoff principle
"I call the perpetrator Prince Charming"
Multimodality in Teaching the Subject Language and Communication : Teachers’ Perspectives on Language-Supportive Approaches in Upper Secondary School for Purpils with Intellectual Disabilities
This study aims to contribute knowledge about how teachers use different forms of expression in the subject Language and Communication, and how these choices support students’ language understanding and communicative participation. The study is based on the theory Design for Learning (Selander & Kress, 2021) and draws on classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with four teachers working in the Individual Program of the Upper Secondary School for Pupils with Intellectual Disabilities. The results show that the teachers use and combine different modes to make the content more accessible and support students’ meaning making. The multimodal approach appears as an integrated part of the teaching and can be understood as an example of what the theory refers to as Design 1. The study also suggests that this approach may enhance language accessibility in other educational contexts.
“To Survive, You Must Look Good or Talk Even Better” : En Analys av Könsrepresentationer och Könsstereotypisering i EFL Kursböcker
The aim of this study is to explore gender representations and gender stereotypes of women and men in EFL coursebooks, regarding the aspects of agency, appearance, and role. The method used is close reading. Close reading was used to analyze the gender representations in each coursebook. The theoretical framework consists of the concept of performativity, derived from gender studies and feminist criticism. This concept involves the idea that gender is a social construction that is determined by culture and society, and that one “performs” one’s gender role. This study shows that the coursebooks, to varying degrees, problematize stereotypical representations of men and women. The study concludes that the EFL coursebooks contain stereotypical representations, much like the coursebooks covered in previous research. What the present study has found, more specifically, is that the affiliated EFL coursebooks, explicitly or implicitly, challenge, problematize, and draw attention to stereotypical representations. More importantly, however, it is emphasized that there is a need to problematize stereotypical representations and that teachers should be aware of these aspects when working with coursebooks in class
Homo and Witch : A study about queer witches view on identity based on their own experiences
This study explores how queer individuals who identify as witches articulate the relationship between their gender identity, sexuality, and spiritual practice. Through semi-structured interviews with eight participants, the analysis focuses on how magic, rituals, and queer communities serve as tools for identity expression, resistance to norms, and emotional healing. The study is grounded in a queer theoretical and constructivist framework, understanding gender and sexuality as fluid and socially constructed. Findings indicate that the participants’ witch identity offers an alternative space where queer experiences can be recognized, expressed, and transformed. The study contributes an internal perspective from a group rarely heard in academic research, highlighting the importance of centering marginalized voices in discussions of identity and selfhood.
Analysis and improvement of internal material flow - at Proton Finishing Stans 8
This thesis was conducted at Proton Finishing Stans 8 with the purpose of identifying weaknesses and proposing improvements in the internal material flow. The study applied both qualitative and quantitative methods, including observations, interviews, time studies, document collection, in combination with the analytical tools flow diagram, spaghetti diagram, value stream mapping, and the DuPont model. The analysis of the current state revealed four main root causes: inefficient flow in goods reception, inconsistent use of the QR code system, unclear procedures for handling pallets in the buffer and preparation area and deficiencies in the information flow. These issues were linked to extended lead times, increased risk of handling errors, and high personnel costs. Improvement proposals include merging goods reception and arrival inspection, reintroducing and standardizing the QR code system, implementing a visual FIFO system, and adding delivery information to packing slips. The results suggest that simple, targeted measures can improve material flow efficiency. While the methods used are broadly applicable to industrial operations, the proposed solutions are particularly relevant for companies facing similar challenges to those identified at Stans 8
Delayed Climate Action : Critical Discourse Analysis of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s COP 29 Speech
According to scientific data, one of the most urgent problems of humankind is climate change. While climate change discourses approach this issue in different ways, there is a distinct group of counterdiscourses, the climate delay discourses. The current thesis analyses these specific types within the context of far-right populist politics, more specifically through a critical discourse analysis of Viktor Orbán’s speech at the COP 29 climate summit in 2024. While the Hungarian government usually neglects climate change discourses and systematically weakens state and civil environmental institutions, this was a unique opportunity to scrutinize a coherent speech about climate issues from the Hungarian government. The thesis draws on the dialectical-relational approach to critical discourse analysis, and textual elements are analyzed, such as pronouns, passive verbs, nominalizations, modality, hyperboles, metaphors, and number game. The employed climate delay discourses were identified alongside the legitimation tactics used to justify the government’s position. The thesis shows that far-right populist rhetoric aligns well with climate delay discourses and can effectively utilize its elements
Digital Afterlife : Swedish Perspectives on Trust and Management of Social Media Data After Death
In an increasingly socially connected society, the question of how social media data should be managed after death has become both a practical and ethical concern. This study investigated the preferences and trust of Swedish citizens regarding the post-mortem data management of their social media accounts, which was carried out through a quantitative survey of 174 respondents. The study identified trust levels towards users, social media providers, and analyzed how demographic factors influenced trust. The study’s findings revealed that most participants wished to convert their accounts into memorialized profiles or delete them entirely, with a large majority placing their trust in family members rather than friends or social media platforms to carry out the deceased’s wishes. Demographic factors such as age and whether they have children were found to affect trust levels. The study highlights a lack of awareness regarding the possibility of digital wills, pointing out the need for better user education and clearer legacy tools from social media providers. The study concludes by presenting recommendations for social media providers, users, and policymakers to address the legal, ethical, and emotional issues of post-mortem social media management in Sweden
Cold, Calm, and Cashmere : Exploring Motivations For Quiet Luxury Fashion Consumption In Scandinavia
Background: Traditionally, the consumption of luxury fashion has been all about conspicuous consumption, where consumers demonstrate their wealth and status through visible logos and branding. Nowadays, a rising trend towards quiet luxury can be seen around the globe, which is characterized by its subtle and minimalistic branding, and with a focus on quality and timeless design. Various studies on quiet luxury consumers have been conducted, which are mainly focused on major economies like the United States and China, as well as some smaller Asian economies like Vietnam. The Scandinavian region, which is a big luxury market, and where values of modesty and social cohesion are common, represents an underexplored market for quiet luxury fashion. Purpose: The aim of this research is to explore and uncover the motivations of Scandinavian quiet luxury consumers, thus focusing on consumers in Sweden, Denmark and Norway that purchase quiet luxury fashion. By covering the research gap in regional quiet luxury research and the call for research in big luxury markets that practice minimalism, the study contributes to the existing theory and provides new insights about inconspicuous luxury fashion consumption, particularly in Scandinavia. Method: An interpretivist research paradigm with the use of an exploratory research design has been used. Primary data was collected through 18 semi-structured in-depth online interviews with Scandinavian quiet luxury fashion consumers, selected through both purposive and snowball sampling. Hereafter, a thematic analysis was conducted, which was guided by an adapted Self-Determination Theory framework that includes the psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness, as well as specific quiet luxury motivations related to social sensitivity, which were added based on literature review findings. Conclusion: The results have shown that quiet luxury consumers in Scandinavia are primarily motivated to purchase quiet luxury fashion because of its quality, the ability to differentiate themselves from loud, conspicuous luxury consumers, and to not stand out from the crowd, thus maintaining social cohesion. In contrast to other quiet luxury studies, Scandinavian consumers demonstrated to not be motivated by aspirational motivations, thus not having the desire to chase a certain image or lifestyle. In addition, a new quiet luxury motivation was discovered. This was subsequently named ‘cultural influence’ by the authors, implying the presence of unspoken rules such as ‘Jantelagen’ and ‘Lagom’ in society, which also unconsciously motivates consumers in Scandinavia towards quiet luxury fashion
