    No full text
In a globalized world where an increasing number of individuals choose to work abroad, issues of security and social belonging are becoming increasingly central in diverse cultural and organizational contexts. The aim of this study is to explore the sense of security experienced by Swedish employees within the Spanish context, in relation to social capital. By analyzing the experiences of Swedish employees, the study provides a deeper understanding of how social networks and cultural differences influence both professional and private life in an international environment. The theoretical framework is based on Robert Putnam's theory of bonding and bridging capital, as well as Zygmunt Bauman's perspective on group belonging, and is grounded in qualitative interviews with Swedish employees in Barcelona. These interviews, facilitated through the Swedish Chamber of Commerce, highlight how strong networks and support structures within the Swedish community contribute to a sense of security and belonging. At the same time, challenges related to linguistic and cultural barriers emerged, affecting both social integration and professional experiences. The findings reveal that social capital plays a crucial role in fostering security and managing the complexities of navigating a new cultural and organizational environment. The study provides valuable insights for employers and employees operating in international contexts and contributes to a broader understanding of transnational work-life dynamics.I en globaliserad värld där allt fler väljer att arbeta utomlands blir frågor om trygghet och social tillhörighet alltmer centrala i olika kulturella och organisatoriska sammanhang.

    No full text

‘Aiming for Integration’ — Acculturation Strategies Among Refugee Youth in Sweden : A Qualitative Study Using a Resilience Framework

    No full text
In 2022, one in 20 minors in Sweden had a refugee background. As most refugees do not return to their countries of origin, understanding successful resettlement should be prioritised. Acculturation and psychological resilience are useful concepts, as both acknowledge the interplay between individual and contextual factors in sociocultural adjustment. However, less is known about the role of resilience in the selection and maintenance of acculturation strategies, especially among refugee youth. This qualitative interview study aimed to investigate how acculturation strategies may be shaped by risks and resources using a soci-oecological resilience framework. The narratives of 22 refugee youth in Sweden were explored using reflexive thematic analysis. Deductive coding, informed by an established socioecological model of immigrant youth adaptation, examined the interplay between individual acculturation motivations and contextual factors. The analysis resulted in six themes: (1) war, peace, and opportunities (global forces); (2) (dis)orientation and comparisons (socio-political context); (3) aiming for integration (individual/motivation to acculturate); (4) learning to belong (microsystem—school); (5) inclusion and exclusion (microsystem—friends); (6) support, conflict, and accord (microsystem—family). The analysis highlights how resilience resources may enable maintenance, while frustration and discrimination can pose a risk to the maintenance of a preferred integration strategy

    No full text
This study investigates how H&M represents women's bodies in its digital magazine to analyze how the company consolidates and challenges beauty ideals through visual representation. Using visual analysis as the method, supported by representation theory and intersectional theory, the research examines 19 selected images from 2018 to 2024. These images were analyzed for their portrayal of diversity in body types, ethnicities, and age groups, as well as for their alignment with or deviation from traditional beauty norms and body positivity ideals. The findings suggest that H&M balances between promoting inclusivity and perpetuating normative beauty standards. While the company makes visible efforts to depict diversity in its imagery, this inclusivity is occasionally undermined by the persistence of traditional aesthetic conventions. The study also identifies specific visual strategies, such as the framing aspects, that subtly reinforce hierarchical representations. The aim of this study is to contribute to the understanding of how fashion brands shape societal norms regarding women's bodies and beauty standards. In doing so, it highlights the complex interplay between corporate branding strategies and societal expectations, offering insights into the evolving dynamics of inclusivity in the fashion industry

Multimodal Interaction and Intention Communication for Industrial Robots

    No full text
Successful adoption of industrial robots will strongly depend on their ability to safely and efficiently operate in human environments, engage in natural communication, understand their users, and express intentions intuitively while avoiding unnecessary distractions. To achieve this advanced level of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), robots need to acquire and incorporate knowledge of their users’ tasks and environment and adopt multimodal communication approaches with expressive cues that combine speech, movement, gazes, and other modalities. This paper presents several methods to design, enhance, and evaluate expressive HRI systems for non-humanoid industrial robots. We present the concept of a small anthropomorphic robot communicating as a proxy for its non-humanoid host, such as a forklift. We developed a multimodal and LLM-enhanced communication framework for this robot and evaluated it in several lab experiments, using gaze tracking and motion capture to quantify how users perceive the robot and measure the task progres

    No full text

    No full text
In the present study, gender differences in worry about being exposed to workplace violence were examined through prevalence and levels of worry among men and women. A quantitative cross-sectional study with a deductive approach was conducted, using the theoretical perspectives of the disorder perspective and the vulnerability perspective as the foundation for the study. The study utilized a paper-based survey distributed across four closed specialist psychiatry wards. Healthcare staff were given the survey, which included closed questions designed for self-assessment of their own concerns about workplace violence. The study included 75 participants, 47 women and 28 men. To measure gender differences in the prevalence of concern about workplace violence, a Fisher’s exact test was performed, which did not reveal any significant differences between men and women. Similarly, an independent t-test was conducted to examine gender differences in the levels of concern about workplace violence, which also showed no significant differences. The results of the study show no gender differences in worry about workplace violence, which contradicts previous research. Therefore, the topic of gender differences in worry about workplace violence needs to be further investigated without preconceived notions about gender differences in order to gain a deeper understanding of the topic

Children’s, parents’ and school nurses’ perspectives on HPV vaccination

    No full text
The overall aim of this thesis was to explore and describe children’s, parents’, and school nurses’ perspectives, attitudes, and knowledge of the HPV vaccination. Focus group interviews were performed with 17 school nurses to explore their experiences of offering the HPV vaccination to girls aged 10–12 years (Study I). Twenty parents (Study II) and 13 boys (Study IV) were interviewed face-to-face, the parents about their reasoning regarding the HPV vaccination and the boys about information and communication relating to HPV vaccination. A web-based questionnaire was answered by 206 children and 276 parents about their attitudes and knowledge about the HPV vaccination (Study III). The findings showed different perspectives on HPV vaccination from the children’s, parents’, and school nurses’ viewpoints. The school nurses played a significant role in the process of offering and administering the HPV vaccination (Studies I–IV). They provided information about HPV, and strove to avoid influencing the parents’ decision of whether to vaccinate their child (Study I). Teachers were also described as a source of information (Studies III–IV). Parents expressed trust in the Swedish vaccination program, but showed a lack of knowledge about HPV (Study II). Like the parents, the children showed a lack of knowledge, and were only partially involved in the decision-making process regarding HPV vaccination (III–IV). Overall, the vaccination process is complex, and the school nurse and the teacher play important roles. Children and parents need increased knowledge to make informed decisions regarding HPV vaccination

Leachable and extractable amount of PFAS in ash from waste incineration

    No full text
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of highly persistent, bio-accumulative, and mobile compounds used in a wide range of industrial and consumer products. Due to their chemical stability, PFAS are known to resist thermal degradation, raising concerns about their presence in the residues of waste incineration. This study investigates the occurrence and extractability of 30 targeted PFAS (Σ30PFAS ) in bottom ash, boiler ash, dry fly ash, wet fly ash, salt brine liquid (SBL), and lake water that are used to wet the fly ash, from a hazardous waste incineration facility in Sweden. The leachable fraction of PFAS30 in wet fly ash was also studied. The method used to analyze PFAS30 was the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) method 1633A. Results showed that PFAS were present in all solid ash fractions (Σ30PFAS =1,3-2300 ng/kg), with bottom ash containing the highest concentrations (Σ30PFAS =2,0-2300 ng/kg) and dominated by 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (FTS) and short-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs). Boiler ash displayed lowest concentrations (Σ30PFAS <16 ng/kg), suggesting possible thermal degradation or volatilization of PFAS30 in the high-temperature regions of the incineration process. Wet fly ash samples contained higher concentrations of FTSs, especially 6:2 FTS, compared to dry fly ash, particularly in samples treated with salt brine liquids. This indicates secondary PFAS30 input through post-combustion handling. Leachate analysis revealed inconsistent results with high uncertainty due to low internal standard recovery and matrix interference; however, short-chain PFCAs were consistently leached from the wet fly ash, likely due to their high water solubility. The findings support the notion that PFAS can persist through hazardous waste incineration and remain in ash residues, with variable potential for leaching. These results highlight the need for improved control of waste inputs, and further investigation into the thermal behavior of PFAS and long-term environmental impacts of ash disposal. The results also emphasize the importance of managing incineration residues responsibly to minimize the risk of PFAS release into the surrounding environment

    No full text
This thesis was conducted at Volvo Construction Equipment in Eskilstuna. This study is an improvement project supported by Kaizen, where the cells and their associated processes in the machining axle flow were analyzed to identify and propose improvements with focus on the measurement Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). Problems affecting OEE were examined in relation to availability, performance and quality, which are the factors that have impact on the measurement. The methodological framework used in this thesis was a modified Design Research Methodology (DRM) combined with other methods and techniques, with the Plan Do Check Act (PDCA) method as a complement. By combining Lean methods and data collection techniques, problems, root causes and lean wastes were identified, which led to the formulation of improvement measures. In the first two parts of the study, cells and problems were prioritized for further analysis in the improvement project. Resulting in cell 4b with the identified problems of long lead time and lack of OEE knowledge, and cell 33 with identified problems of manual work and long lead time. Wastes were also identified including overwork, unnecessary movements, transportation, waiting and inventory. The root causes included, among other things, AGV disturbances, many tool changes and the placement of the washing machine in cell 4b, while in cell 33 there were pallet and packaging handling, external operations and measurements. The third and largest part of the study was the development of improvement measures. For cell 4b, the suggested improvements were repositioning the washing machine, painting AGV lines, investing in a turner, improving tool change efficiency and standardizing measurements. For cell 33, improvements in packing, shelving, measurement, staffing, automation, and investment in a new truck were suggested. Furthermore, overall improvement measures for the machining of the axle flow were proposed, including routines for handling more machines, increased OEE knowledge, further development of shift logging, and procedures for basic machine maintenance. An evaluation was conducted through verification by production staff and calculations showing cost-effectiveness and OEE improvement of potential improvements. The proposed improvements show clarity, validity, and reliability through the combination of quantitative and qualitative data and thorough analysis. Suggestions for further work include deepening the analysis of improvement measures, conducting similar analyses for other cells in the machining of the axle flow, to increase the OEE
