In this thesis we propose penalty methods for the solution of Generalized Nash Equilibrium Problems (GNEPs) and we consider centralized and distributed algorithms for the solution of Hemivariational Inequalities (HVIs) where the feasible set is given by the intersection of a closed convex set with the solution set of a lower-level monotone Variational Inequality (VI)

Personal Productivity: The Role Of Prospective Memory In The Management Of Commitments

    No full text
Several studies (see for example, Francis-Smythe, 2006; Macan et al., 2010) showed the existence of a connection between prospective memory (PM) and personal productivity (or time management, TM): the strategies commonly used to support prospective memory (e.g., business planning, prioritizing tasks, notes, to-do list) are the same used for time management. However, there are still little empirical evidence and gaps in the study of the effectiveness of the typical methods and technologies of time management to support this memory functionality. The overall goal of this study was trying to provide a further contribute to the study of this connection through some empirical studies. The first part of this dissertation deals with the traditional approach to prospective memory study. This will include the main definitions, theories and models of PM and the main areas of investigation arisen from the analysis of literature. The second part deals with the most recent approaches focusing on the connection between prospective memory and time management. Based on the inputs identified in the literature, the third part deals with the empirical contributions to support this connection, identifying the most appropriate instruments to be used for the study of the phenomenon, evaluate their effectiveness, in some cases building ad hoc and propose new ones. Moreover, each study is introduced by the related theoretical contributions. Finally, the last part deals with the general conclusions of all studies and the future prospective of research

This thesis investigates the mechanisms which are currently generating new cycles of urban sprawl; on the one hand they are influenced by the global economic crisis, but on the other hand, they tend to converge and develop in the wake of a more general condition of metropolization involving land use. In other words there is a tendency to favour the integration of relations, economic activities and functions that is affecting vast urban areas both in proximity of scattered settlements and within the most important and historically consolidated European conurbations. This condition of metropolization highlights the appearance of forms of intermediate territory which can be interpreted as articulated branches of residences and diverse functions juxtaposed to a connective tissue of farms and infrastructures that induce residents and users to experiment with alternative land uses. In this context, the prevailing viewpoint is the urban-centric one, which relegates the agricultural sphere to the role of mere container of scattered settlements phenomena. Through the overturning of said point of view, this thesis aims to identify strategies and guidelines for the management and reorganization of the intermediate territory that, actively and most importantly, involve the agricultural areas present in it. Essentially we introduce two basic questions to which we want to provide an answer: • can a multifunctional agriculture, tangibly, take part in the regeneration of entire scattered settlements, unregulated and with seemingly chaotic morphological and functional characteristics, overcoming the problem of excessive property fragmentation and the lack of financial resources through various forms of public-private partnership? • can the multifunctional agriculture of some intermediate areas redesign a new welfare and improve social cohesion and the involvement of civil society in the construction of tangible quality? Such strategies are identified through a process that involves both the construction of a model of existing and potential interactions among several territorial areas affected by the phenomena of metropolization and the creation of "principles of compatibility and integrability" that regulate the relationships amid the various existing or potential activities within the above-mentioned areas. The analysis of Italian and European case studies shows a concealed vis inertiae which prevents (as inhibiting agent) the above mentioned strategies from being turned into urban design practices, and which occurs as the result of some "resistance factors" that, although not strong enough to prevent the possibility of defining complementary strategies, still limit the focus of directives, guidelines and constraints. One wonders then what "type" of governance manages to engage and select the most sensitive and stimulable subjects with regards to the possibility of realizing practical projects in order to improve the quality of scattered settlements, starting from the agricultural areas of intermediate territories. The answer to this question is to relate civil society with intermediate territories. They in fact share an “intermediate condition" that makes both the object (the intermediate territory) and the subject (civil society) highly similar and compatible in terms of intrinsic qualities derived from the fact that they rarely refer to a defined "place" (whether a space or a conceptual category). The meeting point between civil society and the intermediate territory is represented by one of the most advanced forms of “contractual community” currently present across Western countries, the phenomenon of co-housing. By analyzing it, the thesis aims to introduce a wider frame of reference as the landing point of generalizable-because-sustainable directives (if placed in intermediate territorial contexts). Through these directives the improvement processes of the morpho-typological and functional quality of scattered settlements are influenced by practical actions which refer to disadvantaged and fragmentary agricultural sectors. By analyzing the issues that emerged from the case studies we have deduced that, compared to the static and repetitive nature of real estate interventions, both on a public and private level, the co-housing option offers a compromise among formal, functional and typological experimentation, in the search of a possible link between the borders of scattered settlements and structures of the intermediate territories

Una carta di valutazione per le strategie di rigenerazione del territorio storico

The main purpose of the present work is to develop a methodological proposal for the evaluation of development policies and regeneration strategies for small historical towns and minor historical cities, while reconsidering the conceptual categories which define their territorial role. More specifically, the contribution of this investigation is to identify a flexible evaluation process and consequently to build an operational tool – the Evaluation Set of Indicators. The Evaluation Set is a tool to investigate how actions, programs and projects are implemented and the effects they produce; it aims at contributing directly to the continuous improvement of "territorial performances" and at supporting the possible rescheduling of interventions by government and local authorities. The investigation has been supported by both an historical and descriptive approach (analysis of the literature, legislation and the most significant experiences, not only with respect to regeneration strategies for historical towns, but also with respect to evaluation methodologies) and an empirical case study analysis; indeed the application of the Evaluation Set has been tested through two case studies (Regione Toscana and Regione Sardegna), used as benchmarks for the methodological proposal. Since the early ‘60s, Italian academic debate about architectural and heritage conservation of historic towns and cities has been extremely lively and it has produced a number of in-depth researches. Indeed, historic towns and cities are the larger part of Italian settlements and they are proper to this Country: they are part of the historic character of Italy, they tell the story of its unique development and give a sense of place, continuity and cultural identity. However, over the last few years, rapid economic changes and accelerated growth have caused a widespread abandonment and decay of historic towns: they have lost their primary functions and their territorial viability has faded away. Consequently, academic studies have pointed out the need to oppose these phenomena of abandonment and decay and they have emphasized the crucial contribution of regeneration strategies. Indeed, although extensive academic research has explored the dynamics of architectural and heritage conservation of historic cities, much less and more recent research has investigated the effectiveness of regeneration strategies for minor historical towns and, above all, the related evaluation issue. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to investigate potential and effectiveness of regeneration strategies for minor historic towns while proposing an evaluation model. The work is structured in three parts. TITOLO TESI The first part is devoted to the brief description of the theoretical background required to better understand the “question of historical towns”. The literature review and the analysis of the disciplinary debate in the Italian context have been faced in order to propose a definition as clear as possible of historical towns; a thorough analysis has been devoted to determine the proper meaning of minor historical settlements, in order to reconsider their territorial implications while establishing the limits of this investigation. On the other hand, a classification scheme of minor historical towns has been proposed – in order to clarify the phenomenology of historic settlements, functional to the selection of possible case studies. The second part critically describes reasons and circumstances of the recent transition from conservation to regeneration of historical towns and settlements, describing the balance between seclusion and slow development. The following analysis of opportunities, meanings and problems of the evaluation process aims at outlining how it is complementary to development projects and regeneration strategies and how it may be used in a constructive way. The literature review, the investigation of evaluation criteria, methodology and terminology, the analysis of national and international sets of indicators, aim at reducing the lack of uniqueness and the deep variety of meanings with respect to evaluation itself. In the third part, the Evaluation Set is described and tested through selected case studies – Regione Toscana and Regione Sardegna. More specifically, this part describes the general framework of the Evaluation Set, its structure, the evaluation methods and the judging criteria applied. The critical description of the selected indicators is discussed depending on five different “capitals” (human, social, infrastructural, physical and manufacturing capitals) – each of them is described in order to clarify contents and meanings, to review the literature, to explain the selection of the varied indicators derived from national and international dataset. Finally, the results of work have been described – not only with respect to the results of the evaluation of the selected case studies, but also with regard to the effectiveness of the Evaluation Set, the weaknesses emerged during the application, the compliance of the indicators to specific local situations

Characteristic polynomials, associated to the energy graph of the non-linear Schrodinger equation

We study the irreducibility and the separation of characteristic polynomials, associated to the energy graph of the non-linear Schrodinger equation. This fact will be useful in the study of stability of a class of normal forms of the completely resonant non-linear Schrodinger equation on a torus, described in a recent work by M. Procesi and C. Procesi. The problem can be also considered as an independent interesting algebraic combinatorial problem
