Professional learning in physical education

Published with license by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.Professional learning in physical education is typically experienced as a coaching course where the predetermined content is delivered to teachers in short, one-off sessions. This approach can have value, but greater interest is now being shown in more transformative approaches to professional learning that are based on sustained collaboration with peers within the context of the teacher’s classroom. This paper examines three such approaches: Practitioner enquiry, lesson study, and the teacher research group. More specifically, it shares findings from relevant empirical studies, particularly the author’s own research, to understand the potential values of these approaches and identify the features that provide support for teachers and lead to progress in students’ learning.n/

Space-time estimation of built-up landscape of Ilorin Metropolis, Nigeria
This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Papers in Applied Geography on 21/03/2025, available online: https://doi.org/10.1080/23754931.2025.2480101This paper assesses the spatiotemporal dynamics of the built-up environment in Ilorin, Nigeria, and appraises the landscape changes between 1986 and 2020. The study used information from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) with remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as major analyses instruments. Employing the Markov model and artificial neural networks (ANN), particularly multilayer perceptron (MLP) models, the study predicts future land loss surrendered to urbanization processes. The study employed Landsat 4–5, 7, and 8 images of Ilorin administrative areas for five epochs: 1986, 1996, 2006, 2016, and 2020 for land cover monitoring. The Environment for Visualizing Images (ENVI) and ArcGIS software were utilized for image classification, enhancement, processing, analysis, and land use map production. Calculations of land consumption rate (LCR) and land absorption coefficient (LAC) revealed increased land consumption from 3757.23 ha in 1986 to 15,925.17 ha in 2020, with a fluctuating LAC influenced by historical events and specific government policies measured by different regimes. Isolation and characterisation of acid soluble collagens and pepsin soluble collagens from Eel (Anguilla japonica Temminck et Schlegel) skin and bone

Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.Eel (Anguilla japonica) is an important and valuable food fish in East Asia and its by-products have been reported to include bioactive and profitable components. This study aimed to extract, characterise, and compare the structure and properties of acid-soluble collagens (ASCs) and pepsin-soluble collagens (PSCs) from the skin and bone of eel (Anguilla japonica), providing insights into their composition, structure, and properties for various applications. The yields of ASC-S (from skin), PSC-S (from skin), ASC-B (from bone), and PSC-B (from bone) were 12.16%, 15.54%, 0.79%, and 1.34% on a dry weight basis, respectively. Glycine, the dominant amino acid, accounted for 16.66% to 22.67% of total amino acids in all samples. SDS-PAGE and FTIR analyses showed the typical triple-helical structure of type I collagen with slight variations in molecular order in extract and intermolecular cross-linking between skin and bone collagens. The denaturation temperature (Tmax1) measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is 81.39 °C and 74.34 °C, respectively, for ASC-B and ASC-S. Bone collagen has higher thermal resistance than skin collagen. Surface morphology imaged using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed that the bone collagen had a denser network structure, whilst the skin collagen was more fibrous and porous. Student-Parents’ experiences of transitioning into university in the UK: how they feel, what they need, and how we can respond
Research exploring the transition into university of students with parental responsibility (student-parents) in the UK is very limited. This is a notable gap, not least given the recent inclusion of student-parents in the Office for Students’ Equality of Opportunity Register, meaning that all English providers are now obliged to identify and mitigate barriers to success for student-parents in their institutional Access & Participation Plans.
This paper explores the findings of a UK-wide study of undergraduate student-parents. It provides an insight into participants’ feelings and motivations on starting university and reveals what student-parents need to ensure their successful transition into higher education. The paper concludes with recommendations for practice and shares two evidence-based, research-informed guides co-created with student-parents. These guides translate the learnings from the research project into practical toolkits aimed at assisting student-parents to navigate university and supporting personal tutors to facilitate their student-parent tutees’ transition into Higher Education.Unfunde
Climate change readiness in Arab universities: Policy paths for the future of climate action

El-BaryClimate change is a growing global crisis with far-reaching implications for environmental, economic, social, and public health stability. The Arab region, comprising 22 countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), faces unique challenges due to its arid climate, limited freshwater resources, and reliance on climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture and energy. Rising temperatures, intensified heatwaves, and increasing water scarcity have already begun to disrupt ecosystems, exacerbate food insecurity, and challenge the region’s socio-economic development. Given the region’s projected population growth and the expected decline in agricultural productivity, it is crucial to identify sustainable pathways to address these interconnected crises. Universities, as key institutions of knowledge, research, and societal engagement, hold significant potential in tackling climate change and driving adaptation and mitigation strategies. This paper examines how Arab universities can contribute more effectively to climate action, focusing on their roles in research, curriculum development, sustainable campus operations, and community outreach. Through a combination of PEST (Political, Economic, Social, and Technological) analysis, expert surveys, and Policy Pathways Mapping, the study assesses the factors influencing the ability of Arab universities to engage in climate change initiatives. It identifies key barriers, including inadequate funding, fragmented research efforts, and weak policy integration, as well as opportunities for improving institutional responses to climate challenges. The paper proposes strategic policy pathways that emphasize the importance of regional collaboration, sustainable financing, and the integration of climate change into educational frameworks. It further outlines actionable recommendations for enhancing universities' roles in climate change mitigation and adaptation, such as fostering interdisciplinary research, expanding climate literacy, adopting green campus practices, and strengthening community engagement. By implementing these policy pathways, Arab universities can become critical drivers of change in the region’s climate response efforts, advancing both national and global climate goals. The paper concludes with a call for a comprehensive, coordinated approach to align higher education institutions with climate action frameworks and policies, ensuring that universities fulfill their potential as leaders in climate resilience and sustainability.Unfunde

Mapping the age of autistic spectrum condition diagnosis, affected by sex and intellectual disability

More commonly diagnosed in males, and during childhood, diagnoses are increasingly being made throughout adulthood.
Purpose: To establish what age autistic people receive their diagnosis, and whether the age of diagnosis was influenced by their sex and by the presence of intellectual disability.
Design: A quantitative, cross-sectional, retrospective study. Data was collected from the Primary Care records of 6 GP Practices covering Ellesmere Port, a large town in Northwest England with 71,210 people registered. Mean age of diagnosis was calculated for the group then for each subgroup, to allow comparison between males and females, and those with and without a documented intellectual disability.
Findings: Data from 1130 autistic participants were analysed. Age of participants was between 3 - 81 years with an age of autism diagnosis of 1 - 72 years. 85.6% of participants were diagnosed with autism by the age of 25 years, most commonly at 3 years of age (11.9%). The average age of diagnosis was 2.48 years later for females diagnosed across the lifespan. Average age of diagnosis was 5.05 years later for those with a learning disability.
Practical implications: This study highlights the importance of healthcare professionals, educators and care givers recognising autistic traits in people across the lifespan, including the potential for diagnostic overshadowing. There are implications for commissioning autistic services, to ensure adequate assessment pathway capacity for adolescents and adults as well as children.unfunde
