Hunter-Gatherers in the Landscape: Surveys and Excavations in the Eastern Vale of Pickering, 1976-2000
This monograph presents the results of over twenty-five years of archaeological and palaeoenvironmental research on the Late Glacial (Late Upper Palaeolithic) and Early Holocene (Mesolithic) landscape of the palaeo-Lake Flixton in the eastern Vale of Pickering, North Yorkshire. Initially conceived as a rescue project focused on Seamer Carr, an area of land lying a few kilometres northwest of the well-known Early Mesolithic site of Star Carr, the project ultimately developed into a much wider study of the early prehistoric occupation of the former lake and its environs. By the time the project concluded it had successfully mapped much of the former lake and developed a detailed account of both the human and environmental histories of this landscape.
While some elements of this research have been published previously, this volume represents the definitive report on the results of the project, and the research strategies employed to investigate an entire landscape buried beneath peat deposits, and with little visible evidence for human activity on the modern ground surface. The data produced by the project, brought together in this volume, provides an unparalleled analysis of the changing nature of Late Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic settlement in lowland northern England and helps place the extensively excavated site of Star Carr in its wider landscape context.The financial support provided over the course of over four decades of fieldwork and post-excavation activities by Historic England (and its previous iterations as English Heritage and the Ancient Monuments section of the Department of the Environment), North Yorkshire County Council, the Leverhulme Trust and a host of additional sponsors of the Vale of Pickering Research Trust (VPRT) is gratefully acknowledged. Scary Monsters: Monstrosity, Masculinity and Popular Music
This book is not available through ChesterRep.Popular music and masculinity have rarely been examined through the lens of research into monstrosity. The discourses associated with rock and pop, however, actually include more 'monsters' than might at first be imagined. Attention to such individuals and cultures can say things about the operation of genre and gender, myth and meaning. Indeed, monstrosity has recently become a growing focus of cultural theory. This is in part because monsters raise shared concerns about transgression, subjectivity, agency, and community. Attention to monstrosity evokes both the spectre of projection (which invokes familial trauma and psychoanalysis) and shared anxieties (that in turn reflect ideologies and beliefs). By pursuing a series of insightful case studies, Scary Monsters considers different aspects of the connection between music, gender and monstrosity. Its argument is that attention to monstrosity provides a unique perspective on the study of masculinity in popular music culture
Diva: Feminism and Fierceness from Pop to Hip-Hop
For many people in the UK, particularly those of an older generation, Grace Jones remains an archetypal diva. In 2006, the TV network channel Gold ran a poll to find the “most shocking” moments in international chat show history. Grace’s November 1980 Russell Harty Show appearance, where she had an altercation of sorts with the host, topped the listing. Gold’s head, James Newton, added in a BBC news story that such moments were ones “which people throughout the country talked about at the time and still remember with great fondness.” He expressed the complexity of the “shocking” show’s reception. Rather than simply dismissing Grace on the Russell Harty Show as committing an act of personal vengeance, or worst still as “mad” or intoxicated, it is better contextualize her actions in relation to the social changes and discussion going on around popular music in that particular era: a time of “creative destruction” in which computer technology reduced the need for human labour in Western nations. New technologies both created a demand for skilled labour and increased wage inequalities. Rather than creating communal unity, the dominant business practices of the emerging era worked to alienate, fragment and encourage competition. Western cultural traditions simultaneously began to increasingly embrace postcolonial, multicultural hybridity. Orientalism in perceptions of race often defined racial different through notions of “unruly” Otherness. One of the means Grace could use to portray her struggle for control at work was by drawing on assumptions about Black female sexuality, sexual availability, and its ambivalent association with the new economy of high gloss beauty and fashion. Here, “being a diva” meant not simply demanding perfection, but causing a commotion which commodified oneself by generating publicity. Seen in this way, divahood is not only a shared Black female response to structural racism, or, worse still, a uniquely female personal quirk, but is instead a mode of economic empowerment in a new celebrity economy
Bowel cancer knowledge gaps evident among Irish residents: results of a national questionnaire survey

The Version of Record is available online at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11845-023-03273-1.Background: The extent of knowledge of bowel cancer, its symptoms and risk factors are unknown in Irish residents. An understanding of bowel cancer awareness may be useful in aiding healthcare professionals, and policy makers develop improved bowel cancer awareness programmes and public health initiatives in Ireland.
Aims and methods: A 22-question online questionnaire survey was designed to gather data to assess residents' awareness of bowel cancer, its symptoms, and risk factors and to determine reasons for not participating in BowelScreen Ireland.
Results: There were 449 participants (329 women, 119 men and 1 'prefer not to say'). The majority of participants were aged 35-49 years (42.8%), and 82.6% had completed a third level qualification. Irish residents (non-healthcare professionals/scientists (NHCP/S)) recalled on average less than three warning signs/symptoms. Among NHCP/S the most well-recalled protective diet and lifestyle choices were active lifestyle/exercise (62.1%), a fibre rich diet (45.4%) and no/low alcohol consumption (32.1%). Many were unable to recall red and processed meat as risk factors with only 10.7% and 4.9%, respectively, citing these foods. However, prompted awareness was superior with 71.1% agreeing or strongly agreeing that consumption of red and processed meat is a risk factor. 43.4% said they would be 'fairly confident' in recognising a sign/symptom, but more than a third (38.7%) reported they were 'not very confident'.
Conclusion: This survey emphasises the need to improve the awareness of bowel cancer as gaps in this specific cancer knowledge were evident among Irish residents.

Velocity distribution of liquid phase at gas-liquid two-phase stratified flow based on particle image velocimetry
Horizontal gas-liquid flows are commonly encountered in the production section of the oil and gas industry. To further understand all parameters of the pipe cross-section, this paper use particle image velocimetry to study the circular pipe cross-section liquid velocity distribution rule. Firstly the focus is on the software and hardware combination of image correction system, to solve the influence of different refractive indexes of medium and pipeline curvature caused by image distortion. Secondly, the velocity distribution law of the corrected stratified flow (the range of liquid flow of 0.09-0.18 m3/h, and gas flow range of 0.3-0.7 m3/h) cross-section at different flow points of the pipeline cross-section at x=0 and in the Y direction at the maximum liquid velocity is studied. It is found that these distribution laws are caused by the influence of the interphase force of the gas-liquid interface and the resistance of the pipe wall. The current measurements also produce a valuable data set that can be used to further improve the stratified flow model for gas-liquid flow

Effect of movement‐evoked and tonic experimental pain on muscle force production
Introduction: When performing an exercise or a functional test, pain that is evoked by movement or muscle contraction could be a stronger stimulus for changing how individuals move compared to tonic pain. We investigated whether the decrease in muscle force production is larger when experimentally‐induced knee pain is directly associated to the torque produced (movement‐evoked) compared to a constant painful stimulation (tonic). Methods: Twenty‐one participants performed three isometric knee extension maximal voluntary contractions without pain (baseline), during pain, and after pain. Knee pain was induced using sinusoidal electrical stimuli at 10 Hz over the infrapatellar fat pad, applied continuously or modulated proportionally to the knee extension torque. Peak torque and contraction duration were averaged across repetitions and normalized to baseline. Results: During tonic pain, participants reported lower pain intensity during the contraction than at rest (p < 0.001), whereas pain intensity increased with contraction during movement‐evoked pain (p < 0.001). Knee extension torque decreased during both pain conditions (p < 0.001), but a larger reduction was observed during movement‐evoked compared to tonic pain (p < 0.001). Participants produced torque for longer during tonic compared to movement‐evoked pain (p = 0.005). Conclusion: Our results indicate that movement‐evoked pain was a more potent stimulus to reduce knee extension torque than tonic pain. The longer contraction time observed during tonic pain may be a result of a lower perceived pain intensity during muscle contraction. Overall, our results suggest different motor adaptation to tonic and movement‐evoked pain and support the notion that motor adaptation to pain is a purposeful strategy to limit pain. This mechanistic evidence suggests that individuals experiencing prevalently tonic or movement‐evoked pain may exhibit different motor adaptations, which may be important for exercise prescription.VoR made available on 10/10/2023.Funder: Wellcome Trust; doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/10001026
Interplay between leadership and patient safety in dentistry: a dental hospital-based cross-sectional study
Objectives: The study aimed to study the association of leadership practices and patient safety culture in a dental hospital. Design: Hospital-based, cross-sectional study Setting: Riphah Dental Hospital (RDH), Islamabad, Pakistan. Participants: All dentists working at RDH were invited to participate. Main outcome measures: A questionnaire comprised of the Transformational Leadership Scale (TLS) and the Dental adapted version of the Medical Office Survey of Patient Safety Culture (DMOSOPS) was distributed among the participants. The response rates for each dimension were calculated. The positive responses were added to calculate scores for each of the patient safety and leadership dimensions and the Total Leadership Score (TLS) and total patient safety score (TPSS). Correlational analysis is performed to assess any associations. Results: A total of 104 dentists participated in the study. A high positive response was observed on three of the leadership dimensions: inspirational communication (85.25%), intellectual stimulation (86%), and supportive leadership (75.17%). A low positive response was found on the following items: ‘acknowledges improvement in my quality of work’ (19%) and ‘has a clear sense of where he/she wants our unit to be in 5 years’ (35.64%). The reported positive responses in the patient safety dimensions were high on three of the patient safety dimensions: organisational learning (78.41%), teamwork (82.91%), and patient care tracking/follow-up (77.05%); and low on work pressure and pace (32.02%). A moderately positive correlation was found between TLS and TPSS (r=0.455, p<0.001). Conclusions: Leadership was found to be associated with patient safety culture in a dental hospital. Leadership training programmes should be incorporated during dental training to prepare future leaders who can inspire a positive patient safety culture
Vegan Children in English Secondary Schools: Challenging Norms and Personal Impacts
As a teacher, teacher educator, and ethical vegan, I have reflected on how animals are used, viewed, taught, and discussed in the school system. Inspired by the work of McDonald, Cevero, and Courtenay (1999), this study aims to explore the experiences of vegans, specifically their ability to challenge normative ideologies. However, unlike previous research, this study focuses on children in UK secondary schools. Giroux's (2001) concept of the hidden curriculum in schools is vital in understanding the experiences shared in this thesis, including the physical environment, school ethos, facilities, and relationships between staff, support staff, and pupils. Schools and education more broadly are viewed as imposing a typical culture that reflects the social structure and power relations of wider society. Importantly, this study highlights how education perpetuates a normalization of
consuming animals, replicating existing cultural norms.
This thesis provides insight into the experiences of young vegans as they navigate their school life within the context of the broader societal norms and values. The study identifies a gap in the current literature, which fails to consider the experiences of children and young people. The research aims to answer the question of whether vegan children in English schools can challenge the omnivore norm and examines their personal impact. Qualitative research methods were utilized to narrate and
understand their day-to-day encounters. The participants are positioned as engaging in parrhesia, or truth-telling, to convey their experiences.
This interpretivist practitioner-inquiry draws from a variety of methods, akin to a bricolage, to explore personal experiences and encourage participants to engage in critically reflective conversations. Through the research question "Can young vegans challenge the omnivore norm in English schools, and what is the personal impact?" this study concludes that experiences were predominantly negative, particularly in challenging the pervasive norm of animal consumption within schools. Young
vegans faced limited opportunities to challenge these norms and incurred a high personal cost in doing so, which shaped their decisions and identity. These encounters extended beyond the classroom, curriculum, and lessons to the wider school culture. The hidden curriculum serves as a framework for understanding the reproduction and widespread support of overriding norms, including those of omnivores
Novel ultra-energy-efficient reversible designs of sequential logic quantum-dot cellular automata flip-flop circuits
The version of record of this article, first published in [The Journal of Supercomputing], is available online at Publisher’s website: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11227-023-05134-1Quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) is a technological approach to implement digital circuits with exceptionally high integration density, high switching frequency, and low energy dissipation. QCA circuits are a potential solution to the energy dissipation issues created by shrinking microprocessors with ultra-high integration densities. Current QCA circuit designs are irreversible, yet reversible circuits are known to increase energy efficiency. Thus, the development of reversible QCA circuits will further reduce energy dissipation. This paper presents novel reversible and irreversible sequential QCA set/reset (SR), data (D), Jack Kilby (JK), and toggle (T) flip-flop designs based on the majority gate that utilizes the universal, standard, and efficient (USE) clocking scheme, which allows the implementation of feedback paths and easy routing for sequential QCA-based circuits. The simulation results confirm that the proposed reversible QCA USE sequential flip-flop circuits exhibit energy dissipation less than the Landauer energy limit. Irreversible QCA USE flip-flop designs, although having higher energy dissipation, sometimes have floorplan areas and delay times less than those of reversible designs; therefore, they are also explored. The trade-offs between the energy dissipation versus the area cost and delay time for the reversible and irreversible QCA circuits are examined comprehensively
