New records of benthic foraminifera in the surface sediments of the Little Neston saltmarsh of the Dee Estuary in England, UK.
This dataset is not available on ChesterRepWe investigated the community composition of benthic foraminifera in surface sediments taken from 8 sample stations in the Little Neston salt marsh, in England (UK). Constrained cluster analyses determined a zonation pattern in the spatial variability, composition, and richness of benthic foraminiferal species relative to the tidal frame that was constrained by elevation and salinity (as a secondary influence) in our study area. Stations across the high and mid marshes contained a high proportion of agglutinated foraminifera, whereas the low marsh and mudflats were dominated by calcareous species, which is consistent with reports from other latitudinally similar salt marsh habitats. The exceptionally low proportion of morphological abnormalities in the foraminiferal tests that we sampled suggests that the Little Neston salt marsh is a pristine, unpolluted environment. New micropaleontological occurrence records for the Little Neston salt marsh are presented, which will be useful for reconstructing Holocene relative sea-level changes and contribute to global databases: PANGAEA® Data Publisher

Pomiferin targets SERCA, mTOR, and P-gp to induce autophagic cell death in apoptosis-resistant cancer cells, and reverses the MDR phenotype in cisplatin-resistant tumors in vivo
Drug resistance in cancer has been classified as innate resistance or acquired resistance, which were characterized by apoptotic defects and ABC transporters overexpression respectively. Therefore, to preclude or reverse these resistance mechanisms could be a promising strategy to improve chemotherapeutic outcomes. In this study, a natural product from Osage Orange, pomiferin, was identified as a novel autophagy activator that circumvents innate resistance by triggering autophagic cell death via SERCA inhibition and activation of the CaMKKβ-AMPK-mTOR signaling cascade. In addition, pomiferin also directly inhibited the P-gp (MDR1/ABCB1) efflux and reversed acquired resistance by potentiating the accumulation and efficacy of the chemotherapeutic agent, cisplatin. In vivo study demonstrated that pomiferin triggered calcium-mediated tumor suppression and exhibited an anti-metastatic effect in the LLC-1 lung cancer-bearing mouse model. Moreover, as an adjuvant, pomiferin potentiated the anti-tumor effect of the chemotherapeutic agent, cisplatin, in RM-1 drug-resistant prostate cancer-bearing mouse model by specially attenuating ABCB1-mediated drug efflux, but not ABCC5, thereby promoting the accumulation of cisplatin in tumors. Collectively, pomiferin may serve as a novel effective agent for circumventing drug resistance in clinical applications. [Abstract copyright: Copyright © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.. ASPHER Statement: A new Public Health Curriculum for a ‘new normal’
The constant state of change that epitomizes our existence inevitably results in new phenomena that impact on individuals, professions and society. In the context of public health (PH), the ‘new normal’ of our time has been, and is being, shaped by demographic and socioeconomic shifts, scientific and technological developments, political strife, upheaval and migration, climate change and environmental degradation, food and water insecurity and the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, the ’new normal’ refers a constant state of risk necessitating a state of ‘preparedness’ for change which cannot be fully contained or overcome, but which calls for recognition and regulation [ ]. The Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER) recognizes this ‘new normal’ for PH and the challenges it poses for PH education, training and practice.
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated an evolving series of health crises in an increasingly unstable world. It highlighted issues of trust in science and expertise among the public in general, governments, politicians and health care workers. It capitalized on rapid developments and dissemination of information, and exposed the potential of mis and disinformation. It emphasized the need for competent leadership and informed decision-making, and it highlighted the growing inequities of our time. Any acceptance of this ‘new normal’ as being inevitable or hopeless must be addressed, and its potential for positive change must be embraced.
In many respects, addressing the pandemic was basic PH, comprising epidemiology, surveillance, contact tracing, implementing interventions of isolation and vaccination. These must be maintained and strengthened as essential PH services [2]. However, expertise and skills above what have been traditional tenets of PH are also required affirming ASPHER’s endorsement of a multi-disciplinary approach, particularly for preparedness. While current PH education may be constrained by conventional instructional approaches and challenges in the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical applications, essential competencies for an informed PH workforce are evolving.
For these reasons ASPHER, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe, has undertaken to review a Core Curriculum for PH to address the ‘new normal’ and to underpin the attainment of necessary competencies by PH graduates. This is the theme of this year’s ASPHER-member conference, the 2023 ASPHER Deans’ & Directors’ Retreat
An evaluation of the parent and child groups provided by Winsford Youth Forum and commissioned by Sure Start Winsford
© University of ChesterSure Start is a government policy initiative developed as a key part of its agenda to address child poverty and social exclusion. It aims to bring together early education, childcare, health and family support, in order to achieve better outcomes for children. Sure Start Winsford has commissioned Winsford Youth Forum to provide parent and child groups in the local area. At the time of this research there were six different groups in operation, each run weekly by the two session facilitators. The aim of the research was to evaluate the parent and child groups delivered by Winsford Youth Forum. It set out to evaluate the quality of the environment in the different settings and to explore the impact of the services on the children and families who use them
Co-movement clustering: A novel approach for predicting inflation in the food and beverage industry
In the realm of food and beverage businesses, inflation poses a significant hurdle as it affects pricing, profitability, and consumer’s purchasing power, setting it apart from other industries. This study proposes a novel approach; co-movement clustering, to predict which items will be inflated together according to historical time-series data. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the proposed approach based on real-world data obtained from the UK Office for National Statistics. The predicted results of the proposed approach were compared against four classical methods (correlation, Euclidean distance, Cosine Similarity, and DTW). According to our experimental results, the accuracy of the proposed approach outperforms the above-mentioned classical methods. Moreover, the accuracy of the proposed approach is higher when an additional filter is applied. Our approach aids hospitality operators in accurately predicting food and beverage inflation, enabling the development of effective strategies to navigate the current challenging business environment in hospitality management. The lack of previous work has explored how time series clustering can be applied to support inflation prediction. This study opens a new research paradigm to the related field and this study can serve as a useful reference for future research in this emerging area. In addition, this study work contributes to the data analytics research stream in hospitality management literature
Theorising Resilience in Times of Austerity
This book chapter is not available on ChesterRepResilience is an important theoretical construct that helps to conceptualise the ways individuals and organisations attempt to countervail the effects of poverty and austerity. As a response to prolonged crises, such as the global economic crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, this chapter focuses on tracing the psychological, behavioural, sociological and spatial perspectives of resilience, advancing our current understanding of resilience theory within the marketing and consumption context of crises and austerity. The chapter reviews recent research exploring the importance of resilience, and more specifically the notion of persistent resilience in response to long-term stressors, such as unemployment, triggered by the austerity measures imposed by European governments following the global economic crisis as well as the COVID-19 pandemic. In advancing previous research in this area, we offer a broader perspective by underlining the impetus for businesses and communities to employ a range of resilience strategies while also highlighting the importance for individuals to develop a sustainable set of resilience capacities to help creatively navigate the market and flexibly adapt to the long-term effects of intense and long-standing crises
Transatlantic Drift: The Ebb and Flow of Dance Music
Titled Transatlantic Drift: The Ebb and Flow of Dance Music, this book tracks the evolving story of electronic dance music from WWII to the Millennium, as the beat bounced between Europe and North America. It will be published by Reaktion, in 2025. Music is not formed in isolation; humans are social animals, keen to draw on influences, to come together collectively, to share music, whether in their hometowns or travelling the world to share melody, and to feel the beat, communally. From Detroit to Wigan; from Dusseldorf to Chicago; from New York to Ibiza, the story of dance music has been a conversation between many people, in many, many different areas, communicating through the beat. This book will interrogate those ideas
