    A Miniature and Intelligent Low-Power in situ Wireless Monitoring System for Automotive Wheel Alignment

    Automotive wheel misalignment is the most significant cause of excessive wear on tires, which will severely affect the stability and safety of vehicle handling, and cause serious consequences for human health and the environment. In this study, an energy-efficient onboard wheel alignment wireless monitoring system (WAWMS) is developed to detect wheel misalignment in real time. To minimise power consumption, a dual wake-up strategy is proposed to wake the microcontroller by a real-time clock (RTC) and an accelerometer. Furthermore, an online self-calibration method of inertial measurement unit (IMU) sampling frequency is investigated to improve measurement accuracy. Eventually, real-world wheel misalignment tests were performed with the WAWMS. The error-correcting output codes based support vector machines (ECOC-SVM) method successfully classifies different wheel alignment conditions with an average accuracy of 93.2% using nine principal components (PCs) of 3-axis acceleration spectrum matrixes. It validates the effectiveness of the designed WAWMS on automotive wheel alignment monitoring

    Top 10 Most-Cited Articles Concerning Blended Learning for Introductory Algorithms and Programming: A Bibliometric Analysis and Overview

Blended learning is widely used in school and university subjects. This research aims to determine how blended learning has been applied to algorithms and programming courses over the last 20 years. This study analyzes the quality and quantity of scientific publications using bibliometric techniques and then provides an overview of how blended learning is used and its impact. For this analysis and review, this study conducted a bibliometric analysis of articles published in the last 20 years (2000–2021) and then presented the 10 most cited articles. We established the following criteria for articles: 1) sourced from the Scopus database, 2) concerned about blended learning in algorithms and programming, and 3) publication is limited to articles published in indexed international journals and proceedings. The VOSviewer and MS-Excel applications help with data presentation in this method. We collected 240 articles that met these criteria from the Scopus database, which contained 297 articles published between 2000 and 2021. The most-cited article received 52 citations, while the least received only 3. The top 10 most cited articles are from the following countries: 1) Norway, 2) Serbia, and 3) Saudi Arabia. We divided the articles into categories based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The findings of this study can be used as a reference for state-of-the-art and novelty, as well as for the dissemination of scientific references related to the use of blended learning for introductory algorithms and programming

    The humanistic and economic burden of problem joints for children and adults with moderate or severe haemophilia A: Analysis of the CHESS population studies

    Introduction: Adequate prophylactic treatment and physical activity improve joint health and clinical outcomes for people with haemophilia A (HA). However, non‐clinical joint‐related burden of moderate (MHA) and severe (SHA) HA has not been well characterised. Aim: To quantify the joint health‐related humanistic and economic burden of MHA and SHA in Europe. Methods: A retrospective analysis of the cross‐sectional CHESS population studies using a patient‐centric measure of joint health (problem joints, PJs: chronic joint pain and/or limited range of movement due to compromised joint integrity with or without persistent bleeding) was conducted. Descriptive statistics summarised health‐related quality of life (HRQoL), work productivity/activity impairment and costs by number of PJs (0, 1 or ≥2) and HA severity. Results: A total of 1171 patients were included from CHESS‐II (n = 468) and CHESS‐PAEDs (n = 703). In both studies, 41 and 59% of patients had MHA and SHA, respectively. Prevalence of ≥2 PJs was similar with MHA and SHA (CHESS‐II: 23 and 26%; CHESS‐PAEDs: 4 and 3%, respectively). HRQoL was worse with an increasing number of PJs (CHESS‐II: .81 vs. .66 with 0 and ≥2 PJs, respectively, for MHA; .79 vs. .51 for SHA; CHESS‐PAEDs: .64 vs. .26 and .72 vs. .14). Total costs increased with increasing PJs regardless of severity in CHESS‐II (€2923 vs. €22,536 with 0 and ≥2 PJs, respectively, for MHA; €11,022 vs. €27,098 for SHA) and CHESS‐PAEDs (€6222 vs. €11,043 for MHA; €4457 vs. €14,039 for SHA). Conclusion: Presence of PJs was associated with a substantial humanistic and economic burden on patients with MHA or SHA across the lifespan

    The effects of an acute dose of New Zealand blackcurrant extract on 5-km running performance

Sixteen trained male runners (age 26 ± 5 years, stature 173.4 ± 7.3 cm, body mass, 73.7 ± 6.9 kg, V̇O2max 55.4 ± 6.1 ml.kg-1.min-1) ingested either capsules containing NZBC extract (3 x 300 mg CurraNZTM, 315 mg anthocyanins) or a matched placebo (3 x 300 mg gluten free flour) 2 hours before exercise in a double-blind, randomised, crossover design. Performance time, physiological, and metabolic responses were assessed in a 5-km time-trial, preceded by 10 min exercise at the lactate threshold on a treadmill. NZBC extract did not alter the physiological or metabolic responses to exercise at the lactate threshold (V̇O2, RER, V̇E, carbohydrate oxidation, fat oxidation, heart rate, blood lactate or Rating of Perceived Exertion, P>0.05). The 5-km time-trial was completed in a faster time in the NZBC extract condition compared to placebo (NZBC: 1308.96 ± 122.36 s, Placebo: 1346.33 ± 124.44, P=0.001, d=-0.23, CI range=-0.46 to 0.00 s). No differences in physiological or metabolic responses were apparent between conditions for the 5-km time-trial (P>0.05). Ingesting 900 mg of NZBC extract as an acute dose improves performance in trained male runners without altering physiological or metabolic responses to exercise. Further research is needed to assess a wider range of possible mechanisms (e.g., cardiovascular function, metabolite profiles) to advance insight into improved performance following supplementation

Results show that ferroelectric domain walls are active at the THz band, with lower dielectric permittivity compared with that of the domain. This work has verified that it is feasible to use domain wall engineering method to optimize properties of ferroelectrics at the THz band, which help create new applications for ferroelectric materials at THz frequency

    Remaining ‘in-between’ the divides? Conceptual, methodological, and ethical political dilemmas of engaged research in Critical Military Studies

In this article, we offer a close reading of foundational CMS literature to reveal its distinct approach to the critical study of military power. We argue this foundational literature is characterised by a commitment to a series of ‘in-between’ and 'engaged' positions on conceptual binaries between civilian and military spheres, questions of methodological proximity to or distance from military actors, and ethical political support for or opposition to militarism. While CMS makes important contributions to analyses of military power and security, we argue it too often re-centres white western male military subjects and agendas while marginalising antimilitarism. In this way, we argue, it reproduces a form of epistemic and ‘methodological whiteness’ that limits its potential to offer a sustained critique of the racialised structural inequalities and violent effects of militarism in world politics

    Searching the literature on scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL): An academic literacies perspective: Part 1

    There are few references that critically evaluate the different ways of searching the literature on scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), or how these are related to researchers’ goals. We use an academic literacies perspective as a lens with which to explore the different ways that literature searches may be undertaken. While searching the literature is often presented as a scientific objective process; the reality is much messier, nuanced, and iterative. It is a complex, context-dependent process. We provide a practical, critical guide to undertaking SoTL literature searches and argue that these need to be seen as socially constructed processes. There is no one way of searching the SoTL literature. The academic literacies perspective leads us to emphasise the variety of different purposes for carrying out a literature search. We distinguish between using comprehensive tools and selective sources. We end by arguing that there is a need for SoTL researchers to be less insular and take purposeful steps to search for, cite, and amplify diverse voices. This article complements a separate one reviewing and synthesising the SoTL literature (Healey and Healey 2023)

    Antibacterial, Remineralising and Matrix Metalloproteinase Inhibiting Scandium-doped Phosphate Glasses for Treatment of Dental Caries

    Objectives: Antibiotic resistance is increasingly a growing global threat. This study aimed to investigate the potential use of newly developed scandium-doped phosphate-based glasses (Sc-PBGs) as an antibacterial and anticariogenic agent through controlled release of Sc3+ ions. Methods: Sc-PBGs with various calcium and sodium oxide contents were produced and characterised using thermal and spectroscopic analysis. Degradation behaviour, ion release, antibacterial action against Streptococcus mutans, anti-matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) activity, remineralisation potential and in vivo biocompatibility were also investigated. Results: The developed glass system showed linear Sc3+ ions release over time. The released Sc3+ shows statistically significant inhibition of S. mutans biofilm (1.2 log10 CFU reduction at 6 h) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) activity, compared with Sc-free glass and positive control. When Sc-PBGs were mounted alongside enamel sections, subjected to acidic challenges, alternating hyper- and hypomineralisation layers consistent with periods of re- and demineralisation were observed demonstrating their potential remineralising action. Furthermore, Sc-PBGs produced a non-toxic response when implanted subcutaneously for 2 weeks in Sprague Dawley rats. Significance: Since Sc3+ ions might act on various enzymes essential to the biological mechanisms underlying caries, Sc-PBGs could be a promising therapeutic agent against cariogenic bacteria

    Comparison of person-centred and cumulative risk approaches in explaining the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and behavioural and emotional problems

To access the final edited and published work see http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/08862605231153877Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) commonly co-occur, and researchers often estimate their impact using a cumulative risk approach. The person-centred approach offers another approach to operationalise the co-occurrence of ACEs. This study aims to estimate latent classes of ACEs in a sample of UK children, examine their relationship with emotional and behavioural problems, and compare the explanatory value of the latent classes to cumulative risk scores. Data were collected among a general population sample of British 10-year-old children extracted from the UK Household Longitudinal Study (N = 601). Seven items characterised ACEs, comprising parent-report physical discipline, emotional abuse, supervisory neglect, maternal psychological distress, and child-report parental educational disinterest, bullying victimisation, and adverse neighbourhood. Outcome measures were derived from the self-report Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire including total difficulties, emotional symptoms, conduct problems, hyperactivity, peer problems, and prosocial behaviour. Latent class analysis resulted in a 3-class solution: low ACEs, household challenges, community challenges. Compared to the other classes, the community challenges class scored substantially worse on total difficulties, emotional symptoms, and peer subscales. The cumulative risk score was associated with all outcomes except prosocial behaviour. Cumulative risk models accounted for a larger proportion of variance compared with the latent class models, except for peer problems which the person-centred model explained better. This study confirms that ACEs are associated with impairment in child functioning, and that both person-centred and cumulative risk approaches can capture this relationship well. Specifically, the person-centred approach demonstrated how co-occurring risks factors in the community challenges class produced particularly poor internalising outcomes.Economic and Social Research Council; FundRef: https://doi.org/10.13039/501100000269; Grant(s): ES/P000746/
