    Navigating towards hyperautomation and the empowerment of human capital in family businesses: a perspective article

Design/methodology/approach This paper draws upon a contemporary literature search to examine a range of scholarly and practitioner perspectives of the challenges and benefits of automation, exploring the evolvement towards hyperautomation and the empowerment of human capital in family businesses. Findings Automation, transforming to hyperautomation, general purpose artificial intelligence (AI) and beyond has the possibility of radically improving productivity. Fear of job obsolescence has been present since the birth of modern automation, and whilst some jobs are at risk of redundancy, a net gain towards higher-skilled labour is already evident. Family business leaders must be prepared to react appropriately to the accelerating war for talent by implementing a strategy for human capital empowerment. Originality/value This unique paper synthesises developments in automation and proposes a future perspective centred upon the empowerment of human capital in family businesses

    Negotiating recovery following sudden bereavements: An autoethnographic approach to making sense of historical personal cumulative grief in the context of Covid-19

    We are all likely to experience bereavement during our lifetime. The impact of the loss is determined by many variables including age, intensity of relationship to the deceased, and social support systems. Traumatic sudden bereavement features additional causative factors of unfinished business, being unable to say goodbye, and sense of an incomplete life. The trauma of repeated sudden unexpected bereavement results in a potentially long-lasting disintegration of self that may lead to prolonged or complicated grief. The purpose of this qualitative study is to contribute to understanding of the lived experience of sudden bereavement and cumulative grief, what is meant by recovery and how it might manifest. It explores the impact of multiple losses, how sudden death can leave a traumatic imprint, and how each may be mitigated through life choices. This study aims to inform professionals and the bereaved in their understanding of sudden, unexpected bereavement in the context of widespread Covid-19 grief. An autoethnographical approach was used to explore the researcher’s lived experience as a young adult of sudden bereavement of three primary family members within a relatively short time span of seven years. All were traumatic losses, with one bereavement especially so. The resulting cumulative grief is investigated along with the researcher’s perception of progress and relapse in terms of recovery and sense-making of historical personal grief. The concept of posttraumatic recovery is explored in the context of the researcher’s personal experiences and linked to current sociological collective encounters with unprepared for, sudden death experienced by many during the Covid-19 pandemic. Data collection and analysis is a constantly changing interplay of interpretation and discovery. Continuous reflection of memories and emotional responses to the autoethnographic and personal journal writing, poems, and image-making provided data through which unexpected themes emerged, expanded, and evolved, leading to an increased level of sense-making that had been previously absent. This thesis adds to the limited extant literature on sibling and parental bereavement experienced by young adults aged 19-26 years, particularly that of multiple, sudden bereavement and cumulative grief. An individual’s experience of grief is profoundly personal and there is no definitive period of recovery that can be applied. The researcher’s isolating journey of historic traumatic bereavements is viewed within a culture where traumatic loss became an everyday occurrence during the Covid-19 pandemic. This proliferation changed the rhetoric from an individual to a shared experience, permitting the previously silenced to become heard, assisting readers to navigate their own experiences of grief, loss, and recovery through the lens of a more grief-informed society, and to inform professionals and affected others in their understanding and support of sudden ‘unprepared for’ bereavement during Covid related deaths and beyond

    Pyrolysis activation energy of cellulosic fibres investigated by a method derived from the first order global model

This is an open access article under the CC BY licenseThe pyrolysis kinetics of cellulosic fibres, a natural cotton yarn (NCY) and a mercerized cotton yarn (MCY), has been explored with a modified first order global analysis method (FOG), via a series of non-isothermal experiments, using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The modified FOG analysis routine was developed to overcome discrepancy in heating rate and the difference between exact results and approximations in integrals. The intrinsic pyrolysis activation energy, with temperature range tending to zero, was found to be independent of heating rate and approximation used, giving average values of 153 ± 2 kJ/mol for NCY and 192 ± 7 kJ/mol for MCY. This proves the applicability of the reported analysis routine under the conducted TGA measurements. The reasons for different values were hypothesized to be the difference in chemical composition and crystalline structure. The findings provide a new approach in the investigation on pyrolysis kinetics of biomass and factors impacting their pyrolytic behaviour

    Towards a framework of aesthetics in sonic interaction

    As interaction design has advanced, increased attention has been directed to the role that aesthetics play in shaping factors of user experience. Historically stemming from philosophy and the arts, aesthetics in interaction design has gravitated towards visual aspects of interface design thus far, with sonic aesthetics being underrepresented. This article defines and describes key dimensions of sonic aesthetics by drawing upon the literature and the authors’ experiences as practitioners and researchers. A framework is presented for discussion and evaluation, which incorporates aspects of classical and expressive aesthetics. These aspects of aesthetics are linked to low-level audio features, contextual factors, and user- centred experiences. It is intended that this initial framework will serve as a lens for the design, and appraisal, of sounds in interaction scenarios and that it can be iterated upon in the future through experience and empirical research

    Prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron Sublineages and Spike Protein Mutations Conferring Resistance against Monoclonal Antibodies in a Swedish Cohort during 2022–2023

    Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are an important treatment option for COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2, especially in immunosuppressed patients. However, this treatment option can become ineffective due to mutations in the SARS-CoV-2 genome, mainly in the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the spike (S) protein. In the present study, 7950 SARS-CoV-2 positive samples from the Uppsala and Örebro regions of central Sweden, collected between March 2022 and May 2023, were whole-genome sequenced using amplicon-based sequencing methods on Oxford Nanopore GridION, Illumina MiSeq, Illumina HiSeq, or MGI DNBSEQ-G400 instruments. Pango lineages were determined and all single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) mutations that occurred in these samples were identified. We found that the dominant sublineages changed over time, and mutations conferring resistance to currently available mAbs became common. Notable ones are R346T and K444T mutations in the RBD that confer significant resistance against tixagevimab and cilgavimab mAbs. Further, mutations conferring a high-fold resistance to bebtelovimab, such as the K444T and V445P mutations, were also observed in the samples. This study highlights that resistance mutations have over time rendered currently available mAbs ineffective against SARS-CoV-2 in most patients.     Repetition and ritual are shared aspects of two very different activities: life drawing and saying the Rosary. Both activities require entry into a quasi-meditative state which is facilitated through a disengagement from thought patterns and cognitive models that are valorised within Western culture, particularly within higher education. This text adopts a somatic approach to examining these phenomena, one that repudiates the dualistic Cartesian epistemological model that emphasises the separation of subject and object, to favour a situated, embodied, engaged, and concerned model. This paradigm, as Critchley (in the text) explains, is one whereby "[ones] being and that of the world are not distinguished for the most part." Saying the Rosary and life drawing bring about states where the inherent isolation of Cartesian subject-object dualism yields to a radical situated-ness, characterised by "focused attention", "open monitoring" and "automatic self-transcending." In such states the quality of our epistemic engagement with the environment, as embodied, situated and engaged agents is greatly enriched. French Version: La répétition et le rituel sont des aspects communs à deux activités très différentes : le dessin d’après modèle vivant et la récitation du Rosaire. Toutes deux nécessitent d’entrer dans un état quasi méditatif, plus facile à atteindre si l’on se détache des structures de pensée et des modèles cognitifs valorisés dans la culture occidentale et en particulier dans le secteur de l’enseignement supérieur. Ce texte adopte une approche somatique pour examiner ces phénomènes, une approche qui délaisse le modèle épistémologique du dualisme cartésien mettant en exergue la séparation entre sujet et objet en faveur d’un modèle situé, incarné, engagé et concerné. C’est un paradigme selon lequel, ainsi que Critchley l’explique (dans le texte), « [notre propre] être et celui du monde ne sont pas différenciés pour l’essentiel ». La récitation du Rosaire et le dessin d’après modèle vivant font naître des états dans lesquels l’isolement inhérent au dualisme sujet-objet cartésien cède la place à une mise en situation radicale, caractérisée par une « attention focalisée », une « observation ouverte » et une « auto-transcendance automatique ».     Enlightened Participation: SME Perspectives about Net Zero on Social Media using the Action Case Approach

Such a future is examined through network-driven change and informed by co-action and shared business management practices. Methodology used in the study We employ an action case (AC) approach to understand the impact of national and worldwide Net Zero policy for small and medium-sized enterprises (SME). We drew upon a qualitative survey with SMEs alongside a social network analysis (SNA) of Twitter data. Findings We discovered a substantial predictive effect of policy support in the SME social media material regarding Net Zero attitudes. Our findings indicate that reinforcing messages on policy support and assisting enterprises in adopting the new objectives may considerably enhance Net Zero accountability and serve as the foundation for an intervention strategy in policy-focused programmes for SMEs

    This book is not available on ChesterRepThe first full-length study of cycling activism through the lens of social movement theory, this book demonstrates that, despite tremendous differences, bike activism can be understood as a continuous and connected activity spanning a century and a half and across continents. With examples from street protest to institutional lobbying, it emphasises cycling’s current central importance to zero carbon transport futures, while showing that cycling activism is also not always about the bike or the cyclist, as successive generations of activists have used cycling to articulate different visions of freedom and autonomy. Moving from a consideration of social movement theory as a means to understand cycling activism, the author presents a series of case studies of collective action, organisations, networks and campaigns in order to illustrate and elaborate a theoretical model through which diverse campaigns and approaches to change can be understood. As such, Cycling Activism will appeal to those with interests in mobilisation for social change, mobility and transport studies, and social movement theory, as well as cycling studies

Higher H2H^2 regularity pp-moment estimates are derived when σ\sigma is bounded, yielding as well space H\"older and LL^\infty bounds for d=2,3d=2,3, and path a.s. continuity in space.
