Use of long-acting injectable antiretroviral agents for human immunodeficiency Virus: A review

    Get PDF
The development of potent antiretroviral drugs has significantly reduced morbidity and mortality associated with human immunodeficiency virus infection, however, the effectiveness of these medications depends upon consistent daily oral intake. Non-adherence can lead to the emergence of resistance, treatment failure and disease progression. This has necessitated the development of long-acting antiretroviral formulations administrable via an infrequent dosing regimen. Long-acting injectable forms of cabotegravir and rilpivirine have reached various stages in clinical trials both for the treatment and prevention of HIV. Other long-acting agents are at various stages of development. This review evaluates the current research on the development of long-acting injectable antiretroviral agents for the treatment and prevention of HIV

Investigating Emotional Contagion in Counselling Practitioners

    No full text
Emotional contagion theory proposes that people have a natural tendency to copy the expressions, behaviours and vocalisations of other people in their everyday interactions and as a consequence, come to feel, if not the same emotion, one that is congruent to that being felt by the person(s) being observed (Hatfield et al., 1994). Previous empirical research has found that emotional contagion holds key relevance for counselling practitioners and their clients. Clients experiencing empathy are reported to experience a feeling of being deeply understood, more prepared to explore their feelings and show an increased satisfaction with therapy. However, potential negative aspects of emotional contagion also exist. Practitioners may feel emotionally overwhelmed by the persistent transfer of clients’ emotions, potentially leading to depersonalisation, detachment, compassion fatigue and/or burnout. The current research investigated how much of the sharing of emotions within the therapeutic relationship can be attributed to emotional contagion in order that practitioners become better resourced to facilitate the processes that lead to empathy and also ameliorate any negative impact through the modulation of emotional contagion and engagement of emotion regulation. A series of five mixed-methods studies were conducted. The applicability of emotion contagion theory in counselling settings was tested and investigated from the perspective of both practitioners and former counselling clients using pre-validated measures and a new 55-item measurement tool, Emotion Contagion in Counselling Scale. Results showed that emotional contagion does occur in this target population. 57% of practitioners’ reporting feeling clients’ emotions physically often. Emotional contagion was reported to enhance the sense of connection and resonance with clients and appears to facilitate relational depth. However, in prioritising attention on the client’s emotional experiencing, and bracketing and suppressing their own emotional response, counsellors somatised. When this somatised emotion remains unprocessed and/or undischarged, practitioners experience significant adverse effects including intrusive thoughts, feeling burdened, unable to settle and occasionally experiencing a residue from their work. Hence, as well as paying careful attention to the impact of aspects of transferred emotion from clients which have been consciously experienced, practitioners need to become vigilant for any residual emotion and endeavour to ensure that it is either processed and/or discharged. It is advocated that practitioners are made aware of the process of emotion contagion and its underlying mechanisms. Practitioners are advised to regularly self-monitor for this emotional residue and proactively use strategies to discharge unprocessed emotion regularly. Initial validation of a new measure, Emotion Contagion in Counselling Scale is reported. With future studies the new measure can be further validated and made available for practitioners for use after sessions and in Supervision

Action research to reassess the acceptance and use of technology in a blended learning approach amongst postgraduate business students

    Get PDF
This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Cogent Education on 18/11/2022, available online: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/2331186X.2022.2145813Although the pedagogy of blended learning in higher education has been well-accepted since 2000, its dimension has been changing, mainly due to the incessant technological innovations. The impact recorded on students’ experience has been reliant on various factors. Some of these factors are cultural diversity, technical abilities, level of organisational support, language difficulties, educational background, learning environment, and instructional design, among others. In this study, the acceptance and use of technology by international MBA students have been reassessed in the blended learning environment. The motivation for the selection of the cohort of international MBA students as a sample was to enable the inclusion of diversity as one of the focal points of the study. A two-cycle model of action research was adopted to reassess the use of technology and compare the attainment of learning outcomes between the blended and traditional learning approaches. Moreover, multiple regressions were employed using the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) to test the significance of each variable collected from the survey on the students’ learning experience and engagement. Our results have suggested that students’ engagement is determined by positive learning experience without any bias toward traditional or blended learning approach. Students’ age group was found to be relevant in the determination of behavioural intention, social influence, effort expectancy, performance expectancy and facilitating conditions towards the effective use of technology and blended learning. Students’ gender was an irrelevant factor in the success of a blended learning approach

Motivations: a study of why some counsellors choose to become counsellors

    No full text
This article is not available on ChesterRepIn this qualitative study, counsellors explored their motivations for becoming a counsellor, and how these can change during training then change again post qualification. Ten participants were recruited and asked, by means of a reflective writing process, to explore their motivations for choosing to become a counsellor, how and if this changed through their training, and then again post qualification. Data were then analysed by thematic analysis. Findings revealed that motives were varied before beginning training. Post qualification many of the challenges had been dealt with and overcome and a great sense of satisfaction had taken place

Antibacterial, Remineralizing Zinc Oxide-Doped Phosphate-Based Glasses

    Get PDF
This study reports a novel melt quenched zinc oxide-doped phosphate-based glasses (Zn-PBGs) of varying CaO mol% designated as C11, C12, C13. The glass degradation rate, ions release, antibacterial activity against S. mutans and remineralization potential were investigated. Zn-PBGs showed one order of magnitude higher degradation rate than Zn-free PBG. The highest rate was observed for C11; Na+, Ca2+, Zn2+ and P5+ release followed the same trend. The higher the Zn2+ release, the greater the S. mutans growth inhibition. C11 showed significantly lower mineral loss from enamel than positive and negative controls. Zn-PBGs could be used to reverse enamel demineralization

The process of replication target selection in psychology: What to consider?

    Get PDF
Increased execution of replication studies contributes to the effort to restore credibility of empirical research. However, a second generation of problems arises: the number of potential replication targets is at a serious mismatch with available resources. Given limited resources, replication target selection should be well justified, systematic, and transparently communicated. At present the discussion on what to consider when selecting a replication target is limited to theoretical discussion, self-reported justifications, and a few formalized suggestions. In this Registered Report, we proposed a study involving the scientific community to create a list of considerations for consultation when selecting a replication target in psychology. We employed a modified Delphi approach. First, we constructed a preliminary list of considerations. Second, we surveyed psychologists who previously selected a replication target with regards to their considerations. Third, we incorporated the results into the preliminary list of considerations and sent the updated list to a group of individuals knowledgeable about concerns regarding replication target selection. Over the course of several rounds, we established consensus regarding what to consider when selecting a replication target

The Change in Test Cricket Performance Following the Introduction of T20 Cricket: Implications for Tactical Strategy

    Get PDF
International cricket has evolved from predominantly Test cricket, to shorter formats of competition. With the high player overlap between formats, the introduction of Twenty20 (T20) cricket is proposed to have influenced Test cricket and therefore the tactical strategies coaches and players should attempt to implement. The aim of this study was to identify the change in specific Test cricket performance metrics following the introduction of T20 cricket across a 20-year period (2000-2020). A total of 667 matches involving the top eight International Cricket Council (ICC) Test-cricket nations were analyzed. Overall, the introduction of T20 cricket has been associated with a change in the way in which Test cricket is currently played. Results identified significantly ( p < 0.001) more runs being scored by sixes and less by fours. A significant (17.4%; p < 0.001) decrease was also present in the percentage of Test matches ending in draws (23.5% in 2000 to 6.4% in 2020). Run rates increased for five teams (India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka), remained constant for one team (West Indies), and decreased for two teams (Australia, England) across the entire period studied. However, there was no change in the number of days Test matches lasted, with the average number of days continuing to last into day five (4.5 decreasing to 4.3). Findings highlight that improving the ability to strike a greater number of sixes, increase the overall run rate, and facilitate strike rotation when batting to be a focus for coaches and players alike. Future studies should ascertain whether the introduction of T20 has had an effect on One Day International (ODI) performance variables while further considering the impact of home advantage and team quality, to facilitate enhanced tactical and strategic decision-making

High quality of LiMg0.9Zn0.06Ni0.04PO4-TiO2 microwave ceramic and its application for 5G dielectric waveguide bandpass filter

    Get PDF
A new microwave dielectric composite ceramic (1-x) wt%LiMg0.9Zn0.06Ni0.04PO4-x wt%TiO2 (0≤x≤18wt%) was synthesized in the low sintering temperature range of 850 oC -975 oC by the solid-state reaction method. The XRD diffractogram confirmed the coexistence of LiMg0.9Zn0.06Ni0.04PO4 and TiO2, and no second phase was detected. Due to their opposite τf values, the τf values of LiMg0.9Zn0.06Ni0.04PO4 solid solution ceramics were adjusted by adding different volume fractions of TiO2. The composite ceramic with x=15wt% sintered at 975 oC shows desirable microwave dielectric properties of εr~10.30, Q×f ~ 58,400GHz (tanδ=2.093×10-4), and τf ~ +4.04ppm/ oC (at ~12GHz). Based on the 85wt% LiMg0.9Zn0.06Ni0.04PO4-15wt% TiO2 ceramics, a fourth order dielectric waveguide filter filled with composite ceramics is designed and packaged for the RF front-end of the China Mobile 5G base station. The test results show that the center frequency of the filter is 4.65GHz, the working bandwidth is 300MHz, the filter has a good out of band rejection capability, and the insertion loss in band is 0.18dB. Combined with the filter test data and material performance, the designed dielectric waveguide filter meets the communication requirements of the base station, and the higher Q×f microwave dielectric ceramic material can achieve low insertion loss and excellent frequency selection performance of the filter
