Can a Brief Loving-Kindness Meditation Buffer the Detrimental Effects of Inappropriate Behavior on Emotional Mimicry?
No full textEmotional mimicry is impaired when the expressed emotion is interpreted as inappropriate (Kastendieck et al., 2020, Mauersberger et al., 2022). We now propose a study to explore whether a brief loving-kindness meditation can reduce the perception of inappropriateness and restore mimicry. The methodology is very similar to that of our previous studies, which had already been approved by the Ethics Committee (proposal number 2021-30; see also 2021-10). In this study, we plan to do a brief online guided Loving-Kindness Meditation (LKM induction) with the participants and to show digitally created targets who express reactions (joy vs. distress) to different scenes (funny vs. disgusting). Prior to the experimental trials, the same targets will be depicted with a neutral expression and participants should wish them that they will always be loved or never have to suffer (LKM condition) or just look at them neutrally without sending them positive wishes (no LKM condition).
During the display of the targets, we measure emotional mimicry using a webcam-based facial emotion recognition software (OpenFace, Baltrusaitis et al., 2018). The targets will be created using Epic Games' free Metahuman Creator software. Hence, these digital targets do not exist, which means that there are no obligations or concerns with regards to ethical issues such as invasion of privacy
Exploring the role of sexual subjectivity in sexualized substance use among Swiss participants
No full textSexualized substance use (SSU) is the intentional use of certain psychoactive substances immediately before or during sexual activity for the purpose of facilitating, prolonging, and/or intensifying sexual experiences. Recently, this practice has become a significant health concern, as SSU has been associated with adverse physical and psychological health consequences. However, little is known about the motives, effects, and protective factors regarding SSU. In this context, this study aims to examine the role of sexual subjectivity for SSU to better understand the motives for sexualized drug use. To this end, we aimed to recruit participants who have experience with substance use (drugs, alcohol) during sexual activities. The experiment pre registered here is part of the project SAVANT (Systematicity and Variation In Word Structure Processing Across Languages: A Neuro-Typology Approach). Building on previous work on Greek and English, the project aims to investigate lexical access in morphologically complex words in a wider range of under-investigated languages, including Indo-European languages like Bangla and Slovenian and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS), and languages from outside the Indo-European family like Arabic and Tagalog. The same experiment is used to present words which break either a grammatical category rule (eg. ‘re-idea’ in which the verbal prefix ‘ re-‘ is attached to a noun) or a compositional semantic rule (eg.’re-smile’ – ‘re-‘ requires that the verbal stem it attaches to be able to take a result-state-denoting internal argument, so attaching it to an unergative verb violates that rule), together with grammatical, existing words formed from the same affix (eg. reappear), and see whether the behavioural and neural responses observed in previous research with English and Greek are universal. The current experiment is a lexical decision task in Bangla (Bengali). We employ a paradigm where category and semantic violations relate to nominal prefix attachment rules, using two prefixes (প্রতি prôti, দুঃ duḥ)
Online social communication of emotion and intrusive memories
No full textThe focus of the current study is to investigate how people are affected by others’ online behavior after seeing negative content online. Indeed, information people share and the emotions expressed online affect others' emotional states, as people take in others' feelings and regulatory strategies (Ferrara & Yang, 2015; Kramer et al., 2014). One notion that might explain this phenomenon is "social appraisal" which is defined as a way to be guided by the reaction of others in a situation in order to know how one should react (Manstead & Fischer, 2001).
Importantly, in a recently published article on multidisciplinary research priorities during the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e. an example of collective trauma) published in The Lancet Psychiatry, Holmes and colleagues (2020) urge researchers to take steps to better understand how people are affected by online information (Holmes et al., 2020)
