No full textMany therapeutic activities that engage clients in in-person therapy rooms are not obviously available via telehealth. Yet there are creative, practical, and easy ways to intervene in teletherapy that go beyond talk therapy.

(Re)negotiating Asian and Asian American identities in solidarity as language teacher educators: An AsianCrit discourse analysis
No full textThe historical and contemporary experiences of Asian/Asian Americans in the United States casts light on the significance of identity negotiation and construction. In this study, the identities of Asian/Asian American language teacher educators (LTEs) are examined within the current sociopolitical context, shedding light on the persistent pursuit of legitimacy and belonging within the Asian/Asian American LTE community. More specifically, this study examines the teaching philosophies of eight Asian/Asian American LTEs from different institutions and regions across the United States as a collective and critically reflexive entryway into their experiences and commitments as LTEs. Using AsianCrit to analyze participants\u27 teaching statements and focus group discussions, this study uncovers (1) a commitment to asset-based and culturally sustaining pedagogies, (2) identity-informed convictions to foster critical consciousness in language teacher candidates; (3) pressures to downplay Asian intersectional identities to survive the Eurocentric norms of the job market; (4) a desire to do more than survive; and (5) the power of the collective for healing and liberation. The article concludes with a call for teacher education programs to create spaces for teacher educators to share lived experiences, foster community, and challenge the dominant narratives that marginalize Asian and other minoritized LTEs
Clearing the Air on E-Cigarettes and Harm Reduction : tobacco regulation, economics, and public health
No full textThe history of tobacco control policy is marked by both successes and failures. While taxes, regulations, and various behavioral and pharmacological interventions have helped many people quit smoking, they have not helped everyone. These strategies are unlikely to contribute greatly to smoking cessation among the remaining group, and intensifying these strategies risks backfire. Conversely, using e-cigarettes (vaping) relieves nicotine cravings while avoiding harmful cigarette smoke. And yet, rather than reporting the growing evidence that e-cigarettes provide an off-ramp from smoking for many nicotine-dependent adults, the public discourse on e-cigarettes more often emphasizes e-cigarette use by young people, prompting fears about nicotine dependence and e-cigarette use leading to smoking.
A critical review of the available evidence concerning the health effects of vaping and whether the use of e-cigarettes helps or hinders smoking cessation does not fully resolve the polarization in the discourse. Disagreement persists about how the available evidence should be produced, reported, and interpreted. These volumes address these points in a succinct and clear manner. Across all three volumes, the authors highlight the important normative questions that remain unresolved by detailing unexamined assumptions. The books enable readers to reconsider what constitutes harm, how much risk is acceptable, and which social groups should be prioritized.
Highlighting that the net impact of e-cigarettes on public health is not immutable but rather hinges upon the regulatory environment, the books examine the opportunities and challenges of optimizing e-cigarette regulation. The authors analyze controversial policies designed to discourage vaping and whether these nudge consumers toward or away from riskier alternatives.

Thinking about starting a franchise business? Think again
Get PDFThis study aims to explain the survival and exit outcome of franchise startups compared to other types of startups. Small business owners choosing to become franchisees have high expectations about business survival since “franchise is a proven business model that carries less risk.” Using the Kauffman Firm Survey, we examine the survival patterns and M&A exit outcomes of a large sample of U.S. independent and franchise businesses started in 2004 and tracked over time for eight years. Our study provides unique results on the likelihood of survival and M&A exit of franchises relative to other startups. Although franchise businesses start larger, are very well-capitalized, and are led by highly educated owners, we find no significant difference in the survival rate between franchises and independent businesses. However, our results show a significant difference between the survival rate of franchises and those businesses started by purchasing “existing” firms. When the outcome is an M&A exit, the results show that franchises are 2.77 times more likely to exit via M&A than independent businesses, whereas “existing” businesses are 1.81 times more likely to exit via M&A than independent businesses. Overall, this study sheds more light on the controversial evidence on the survival and exit prospects of a large cohort of U.S. franchises, independent new businesses, and “existing” businesses
Beyond the classroom: unraveling the impact of student engagement on graduation rates in New York City
Get PDFThis study critically examined the impact of student engagement on high school graduation rates amidst the educational disruptions ushered in by the COVID-19 pandemic, with a concentrated focus on the United States. It evaluated the essential engagement factors--rigorous instruction, collaborative teaching, supportive environments, and trust--and their role in addressing disparities in graduation outcomes (New York City Panorama, 2022; Wang & Degol, 2014). Anchored in the theoretical frameworks of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory (Bronfenbrenner, 1979), social-emotional learning theory (Durlak et al., 2011; Williamson et al., 2015), and Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory (Vygotsky, 1987), this research utilized a comprehensive quantitative analysis of data from the New York City Department of Education to explore these engagement factors\u27 effects across diverse demographic segments, including race, disability status, socioeconomic status, and English language proficiency. The study is poised to offer actionable insights for educational policymakers and practitioners, aiming at the advancement of strategies that ensure equity, foster profound engagement, and equip educational systems to effectively navigate future crises. Highlighting the paramount role of student engagement in the context of high school graduation, this study underscored the critical need for developing educational environments that are not only resilient in the face of global challenges but also deeply inclusive, ensuring the success and retention of students in a post-pandemic era. Through its quantitative analysis, the research brought to light the indispensable necessity for inclusive educational practices that bolster student retention and success amidst the evolving educational landscape post pandemic
