The phenomenon of collaborative leadership at Gensler: work-life balance of co-leaders
This mixed methods phenomenological case study investigates the lived experiences of co-leaders operating within a male-female leadership dyad, with a particular focus on how collaborative leadership influences work-life balance. As organizations increasingly explore shared leadership as a strategy for adaptability and innovation, the co-leadership model - defined by the equal sharing of roles and responsibilities - offers a compelling alternative to traditional hierarchical leadership structures. Grounded in shared leadership theory (Pearce & Conger, 2003) and dual leadership theory (Hasija et al., 2017), this study examines the dynamics of co-leadership within a global architecture and design firm, shedding light on the interpersonal, organizational, and personal factors that shape this unique leadership model. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and questionnaires with purposefully selected co-leaders who currently serve in leadership roles across multiple offices in the United States. Thematic analysis (Scharp & Sanders, 2019) revealed key findings: the importance of relational trust and aligned values; the effectiveness of complementary skillsets in decision-making; and the strategies co-leaders employ to maintain work-life balance in demanding, high-performance environments. Participants emphasized the value of open communication, mutual accountability, and psychological safety as foundational to successful co-leadership. The findings indicate that co-leadership can enhance organizational effectiveness while also supporting the well-being of leaders--particularly when structures are in place to support shared authority and distributed decision-making. At the same time, the study highlights the complexity of balancing individual autonomy with collective responsibility, and the ongoing negotiation required to align leadership rhythms and professional boundaries. By amplifying the perspectives of co-leaders, this study contributes to a growing body of research on collaborative leadership models and their implications for organizational culture, leadership development, and sustainability in practice. Although not a central focus, the conclusion briefly explores the notion of “genderwashing” (Gardiner et al., 2024) as a cautionary lens when examining gender representation in leadership without substantive structural change. This study offers practical recommendations for organizations considering or currently implementing co-leadership structures, as well as suggestions for future research
From silos to synergy: a multi-case study of the enablers and inhibitors of successful post-acquisition technology platform integration
Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) have long been an important strategy for achieving growth. Levels of M&A have been increasing over the past 10 years. An enduring challenging problem post M&A is the effective integration of the technology platforms of the acquired and acquiring firms. This study investigates the enablers and inhibitors of successful post-acquisition technology platform integration (PATPI) through the lens of interdependent People, Process, Technology, and Data capabilities. Based on data collected from interviews with senior leaders combined with publicly available secondary data, a multi-site qualitative comparative case study analysis was used to identify enabling and inhibiting platform integration practices and capabilities across eight acquiring firms. Findings indicate that companies that achieved the most successful post-acquisition technology integrations were those that developed internal dynamic capabilities to balance the objectives of platform consolidation and synergy realization and align these with strategic acquisition rationale. Equally important, they balanced the focus on people and culture, underpinned by methodical planning, effective execution, and a strong emphasis on data integrity. The research extends the dynamic capabilities framework and Strategic Alignment Model (SAM) to the post-acquisition technology platform integration context. It provides the potential to enhance practice by offering concrete frameworks and strategies for platform integration leaders, emphasizing early talent retention, scalable IT architecture, data governance, and strategic alignment
Global workforce dynamics: a quantitative analysis of inclusion, retention, and performance across United States and Japanese cohorts in a multinational corporation
Globalization has lowered geographic and cultural workforce boundaries by increasing global workforce diversity (Boitano et al., 2017; Ferdman et al., 2021; Güzel et al., 2021; Weiss & Wilkinson, 2018). Furthermore, societal revelations through health and social crises have called for multinational corporations to respond with representative workforce diversity (Banks & Harvey, 2020; Dixon-Fyle et al., 2020; Kim & Roberson, 2021). The convergence of globalization, global governance and public policy are factors of global workforce dynamics that reinforce the inevitability of workforce diversity and the necessity for the intentional creation of inclusive work environments (Mor Barak, 2022; Roberson, 2006). This quantitative, correlational study aimed to examine whether there is a relationship between inclusion, retention, and performance in a multinational healthcare company in two matched cohorts, one based in the United States and one in Japan. Furthermore, this study responds to the call for critical inclusion studies that seek to sharply inspect, via research, empirical organizational application and outcomes of inclusion and the impact of inclusion on the retention and performance of employees (Adamson et al., 2020; Roberson et al., 2017; Shore et al., 2018; Stoermer et al., 2016). Additionally, this study addressed the lack of research to determine if national culture impacts the inclusion of employees in different cultural contexts, as research has minimally considered national culture’s influence on inclusion and is primarily Western-focused (Gelfand et al., 2017; Roberson et al., 2017). The findings showed a statistically significant relationship between inclusion, performance, and retention, as well as a statistically significant relationship between country, inclusion, retention, and performance
Strategies and best practices for career advancement for female officers in the United States military
Although there have been significant policies in support of advancing women in the military, they still face many challenges in advancing their careers. Nonetheless, women still have the desire and propensity to serve and work toward higher-ranking leadership positions. Prior research has utilized both qualitative and quantitative research and data from veterans and a combination of officers and enlisted personnel. This paper adds to the literature by using a qualitative, phenomenological approach leveraging the lived experience of active-duty female military officers. Appreciative inquiry and best practices frameworks create the theoretical foundation for this research. Chapter 1 introduces the advancement of women in the military, focused specifically on officers. This chapter also discusses both theoretical frameworks and lays the foundation for the research. Chapter 2 reviews literature on strategies for advancement and challenges for women in the military to form the foundation for the data collection outlined in the Chapter 3 methodological review. Chapter 4 includes the data analysis and data displays. Chapter 5 includes the findings of the study, a discussion about the results, and opportunities for future research
Practical Considerations for XR Technologies Implementation in the Elementary School Curriculum
One of the modalities of the digital landscape that is gaining attention is extended reality (XR), a term that is used to encompass all technologies that merge the physical and virtual worlds (Marr, 2019). Through the evolving landscape of XR, students are now able to attend class, learn, and socialize with their teachers and peers from anywhere in the world. This literature review seeks to examine the existing research on practical, yet important considerations that need to be made when implementing XR technologies in the elementary school curriculum, such as instructor competency, social learning, learning transfer, and belonging
Transgender inmate experiences in prison systems, jails, and detention centers in the United States: a systematic review
Historically, transgender individuals have faced varying levels of systematic discrimination, harassment, and violence based on their gender identity. The standard method that jails and prisons incarcerate inmates is based on assessing female versus male genitals. Transgender inmates challenge the protocols of jails and prisons because of their gender variance. These inmates, who have no power, query how places of reform treat the most vulnerable when they are marginalized by peers and those in positions of authority. Consequently, the disregard that the prison system imposes by not offering other ways to assess transgender inmates poses a risk to them that other inmates do not experience. This systematic review aimed to add to the scholarly literature and to aid policymakers, prison personnel, medical doctors, psychologists, and others in positions of authority to make informed decisions concerning the vulnerable population of transgender prison inmates. This systematic review utilized an integrative approach in an analysis of both quantitative and qualitative studies to create a comprehensive summary and synthesis of existing literature that addresses the research questions (RQs). This search yielded 16 sources that met inclusion criteria. Findings revealed various themes under each RQ and suggested that safety and violence were the most prevalent underlying themes in all publications
