Assessing the “plateaus” vertical development model with a new Likert scale instrument
Get PDFThis research project will focus on the assessment of the Five Plateaus (Plateaus) vertical leadership development model with a newly constructed Likert Scale instrument. Part one of the research project was a pilot study to create a simple, internet-based instrument. The scale, comprised of 100 questions and completed in 30 minutes, assesses participants\u27 self- perceived stage of development as presented in the Plateaus vertical development model. The instrument was designed to capture the experience of participants and to overcome limitations of existing assessments by mitigating the subjectivity of sentence completion instruments, as well as to enhance efficiency and reliability. The pilot study was deployed to a population of 2,000 participants in the Unbeatable Mind leadership development program (IRB protocol ID 23-11-2300). The instrument was successfully completed by 114 respondents, yielding a statistically significant data set for the research analysis of the dissertation to be completed. This research methodology is quantitative and evaluates the construct and content validity of The Plateaus model, as well as the concurrent validity of the model instrument, when compared to other established scales. The quantitative analysis also assessed the efficacy of the Plateaus program by exploring the relationship between demographic variables, duration of practice, and adherence to the program, with respondents\u27 self-assessed plateau level

AI2 (AI Intelligence) project for the university classroom
Get PDFWhile artificial intelligence (AI) is not a new concept, the release of ChatGPT by OpenAI has significantly increased public interest in its applications. AI refers to machines performing tasks that require human cognition. Since Turing’s (1950) introduction of the theory of computation and the imitation game, scientists have worked to develop machines that “think”; like humans. This progress has led to deep learning models that simulate complex decision-making processes (Davoodi, 2024). This study presents an assignment that encourages students to explore AI tools for potential industry applications while comparing their work with AI-generated content. Additionally, we assess student engagement using transformative learning and teaching effectiveness measures. Our goal is to identify best practices for integrating AI in the classroom and evaluate the effectiveness of these pedagogical strategies.
We used a mixed-method approach, starting with an online Qualtrics survey measuring transformative learning and teaching effectiveness. As the AI² assignment evolves, we will refine the brands students analyze to improve outcomes and their practical application of AI tools. Students responded to open-ended questions about their prior AI use, perceptions of AI in the university setting, and motivations for its use in the classroom. We conducted thematic analysis to understand student perspectives. The sample consisted of 13 senior-level students (N=13)
Dayside Auroral Oval Expansion, Magnetic Flux Erosion, and Substorms
No full textMagnetic flux is eroded from the dayside magnetosphere when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) turns southward. During this period, the dayside auroral oval shifts equatorward as magnetic flux is transported anti-sunward to the magnetotail. Poleward-Moving Auroral Forms (PMAFs) are thought to be the ionospheric footprints of the flux tubes which are formed and transported tailward. Afterwards, magnetic reconnection occurs in the magnetotail, resulting in a substorm.
This study looks at the time between the onset of dayside magnetic reconnection and the onset of a substorm. Rates of dayside auroral oval equatorward shifts after southward turnings of the IMF are presented, along with the number of PMAFs generated during each expansion of the dayside auroral oval. The oval shifts are obtained from the meridian scanning photometer located in Longyearbyen, Svalbard at the Kjell Henriksen Observatory (KHO). This statistical study will provide the: (i) average initial (before expansion) and final (after expansion) latitude of the dayside auroral oval, (ii) the average elapsed time for the dayside auroral oval to shift equatorward after the IMF z-component shifts southward, (iii) the number of PMAFs generated for each equatorward shift of the dayside auroral oval, (iv) the time elapsed between the beginning of the dayside auroral oval equatorward shift and the onset of a substorm, and (v) the associated solar wind parameters: IMF x-, y-, z-components, solar wind speed, solar wind dynamic pressure, and clock angle. Finally, machine learning was used to identify dayside oval expansions and their associated PMAFs
Fitspiration and the Prevalence of Orthorexia Symptomatology in a Male Population
No full textOrthorexia nervosa (ON) is a condition characterized by an unhealthy obsession with eating healthy food, often leading to psychological impairment (Oberle & Lipschuetz, 2018). Fitspiration is a social media trend that has gained popularity in recent years, showcasing idealized physiques and promoting rigid dietary practices along with intense exercise in pursuit of health. Using Thompson et al.\u27s (1999) Tripartite Influence Model of the Sociocultural Theory as a framework, the researchers hypothesized that increased viewership of fitspiration content would be associated with higher orthorexia symptomatology and would be moderated by the internalization of sociocultural ideals and physical appearance comparisons. Participants included 219 young adult men who were recruited through two platforms, Sona and Prolific. Their engagement with fitspiration, orthorexia symptomatology, sociocultural attitudes towards appearance, and physical appearance comparisons were assessed. The findings partially supported the hypotheses, indicating a significant relationship between fitspiration viewership and ON symptomatology. However, internalization of sociocultural ideals and appearance comparison did not moderate this relationship. The study uniquely contributes to the literature by focusing on men, whose body image concerns are often overlooked in eating disorder research. While fitspiration may contribute to orthorexia in some populations, the role of sociocultural ideals and appearance comparisons remains unclear. The findings from the current study suggest that further research is needed to explore the complex mechanisms linking social media exposure to disordered eating, particularly the role of health-related perfectionism in orthorexia
Burnout Among Nonprofit Workers: Insight into Nature Breaks as a Resource
No full textBurnout is pervasive in nonprofits and detrimental to organizations’ financial performance and ability to fulfill their mission. The three dimensions of burnout - exhaustion, cynicism, inefficacy - require their own remedies, but organizational approaches can be costly and ineffective, omitting individuals’ agency. They fail to consider burnout’s prevalence among nonprofit workers; indeed, 88% say they are approaching/experiencing burnout. Drawing on the Job Demands and Resources Model, we proposed an Experience Sampling Methodology (ESM) study to investigate one type of (free) agentic, resource-generating way to remedy burnout–nature breaks –which can address all three dimensions, especially for those with lower perceived collective burnout. We presented the proposal at a nonprofit conference, gathered feedback, made revisions, and as per the recommendation, are conducting an exploratory pilot study to gain insight into the phenomenon before launching the ESM. The ethics of deciphering through identifying and categorizing potentially Queer authors and texts impacts our understandings of frequently canonized authors such as Emily Dickinson. Emily Dickinson\u27s nineteenth-century American context informed her ability to write deliberately about her experience of subversive sexual desire. Instead, Dickinson utilizes images of death, apathy, and immortality to illustrate her revulsion toward the male body and heterosexual marriage. This paper illustrates how utilizing Queer and feminist theories illuminates new and potential understandings of Emily Dickinson\u27s body of work and biography
