In the Age of Garcetti: Public Teachers\u27 Free Speech Rights Within the Transgender-Student Debates
A culture war over gender identity is playing out on the school playground, as conservative lawmakers across the country have introduced and implemented various pieces of anti-trans legislation focused on stripping away the privacy and expression of transgender students’ identities. An important question within this legislation remains: may public school teachers be exempt from following these policies? This Comment examines teachers’ free speech rights within two contexts: mandated parental notification of transgender-student policies and guidelines requiring teachers to adhere to students’ preferred pronouns. It considers the viability of compelled-speech claims brought by teachers, applying First Amendment jurisprudence and Garcetti v. Ceballos’s government-speech framework. Ultimately, this Comment argues that Garcetti bars teachers’ compelled speech claims, binding them to parental notification policies and using students’ preferred gender pronouns and names because such speech is made “pursuant to their job duties” and thus constitutes unprotected government speech
Cross-Cultural Engagement on All-Service Vs. Focused Media Platforms
This study provides the first comparison of the complete group of variables in the expanded uses and gratifications theory on consumer engagement between all-service vs. focused social media platforms and further evaluates this comparison in a cross-cultural context. Consumer engagement on social media has been proven to be an important variable driving the development of brand equity. The expanded uses and gratifications theory provides an understanding of why people use social media by identifying six variables influencing consumer engagement: entertainment, integration/social interaction, personal identity, information, remuneration, and empowerment. Engagement is further measured through both psychological and behavioral dimensions. Psychologically, it is characterized by three dimensions: vigor, absorption, and dedication. Behaviorally, engagement is conceptualized across three levels of interactivity and involvement: brand consumption, contribution, and creation.
This study investigates the factors influencing consumer engagement on WeChat, an all-service Chinese platform with 1.3 billion users worldwide, and compares it to engagement on two focused platforms: Xiaohongshu, a rapidly growing Chinese platform with over 200 million users, and Instagram, a widely used U.S. based platform. Through surveys distributed to users of these platforms, this study evaluates consumer engagement based on the six variables of the expanded uses and gratifications theory, as well as two new variables – convenience and shopping – which fit in the theory. The findings aim to provide insights into how engagement dynamics differ between all-service and single-service platforms and offer valuable implications to social media players that are interested in evolving toward all-service models
Development of An Open Source CNC Router
This research explores the development of an open source 3D printed CNC router. CNC (Computer Numerical Control) refers to machinery that is controlled with precision through computers and electronics through the use of programmed instructions called G-code. This specific device is capable of manufacturing components from materials such as wood, plastics and soft metals through subtractive manufacturing. The project builds upon an existing community design to advance functionality and accessibility. This was achieved through the redesign of structural components and revised choice of electrical components. The machine is currently being used to produce components for several Pepperdine undergraduate research opportunities along with personal projects in collaboration with professors. These projects range from engineering to artistic applications. The following poster will detail the developmental and assembly process of the machine. A general guide will be included on the process of CNC machining from component design to finished product. A variety of pieces and components produced using the device along with the CNC router itself will be presented
Does Parental Rejection Predict Adult Disorganized Attachment?
IPARTheory (Rohner, 2021) proposes children worldwide have an innate need to feel loved and accepted in early relationships. Cross-cultural research suggests experiences with early attachment figures influence future attachments (Khaleque & Ali, 2017). This study investigates how adults’ perceived parental rejection in childhood predicts their current disorganized attachment in romantic relationships.
One-hundred-nineteen participants (67.2% women, 32.8% men) with an average age of 19.9 years (SD = 1.48) completed an online survey that consisted of established scales measuring perceived parental acceptance-rejection and adult disorganized attachment (Chronbach’s alphas for all measures ranged from .88 to .95).
Women’s perceived maternal rejection predicted their adult disorganized attachment: F(1, 75) = 7.06, p = .010; R² = 8.6%, indicating a small effect size. Conversely, men’s perceived maternal rejection did not predict their adult disorganized attachment: F(1, 35) = .62, p = .44.
Women’s perceived paternal rejection predicted their adult disorganized attachment: F(1, 74) = 8.27, p = .005, with R² = 10%, indicating a small effect size. Men’s perceived paternal rejection significantly predicted their adult disorganized attachment: F(1, 35) = 5.34, p = .027, with R² = 13%, indicating a moderate effect size.
The results indicate that for both women and men, perceived paternal rejection is predictive of disorganized attachment. However, only for women is perceived maternal rejection predictive. Limitations include small sample size, small effect sizes, and a greater proportion of women participants. These findings are consistent with IPARTheory and suggest that perceived parental rejection may negatively affect future romantic relationships
Insect Aggregation in Gromphadorhina portentosa
Aggregation behavior in insects is largely mediated by olfactory cues, influencing key behaviors such as foraging, mating, and predator avoidance. This study aims to determine whether pregnancy affects social grouping preferences. Using a series of choice tests, we will evaluate how pregnant and non-pregnant females respond to olfactory signals from dominant (alpha) and subordinate (beta) males, as well as from conspecific females of varying reproductive status. A four-way discrimination test will further assess the hierarchical significance of these cues in aggregation decisions. We hypothesize that non-pregnant females will exhibit a stronger preference for alpha males, whereas pregnant females may prioritize association with other pregnant females or exhibit avoidance behavior to minimize disturbances during gestation. This research contributes to a broader understanding of the relationship between reproductive status and social behavior in insects, particularly in species where olfaction dominates communication
Framed Just Right: Media Framing of the Affordable Care Act During COVID-19
This study is a content analysis of New York Times (NYT) articles covering the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that examined the use of frames and covered topics to observe ACA coverage throughout COVID-19. This study utilized methods from Jahng and Littau’s (2022) study to see if trends in framing differed between their pre-COVID-19 and this study’s COVID-19 time frame. Results indicate that framing tendencies during COVID-19 are similar to pre-COVID-19 tendencies with episodic-policy and thematic frames being the most utilized frame types. Framing was typically correlated with the pertinent themes of the time which were typically either a focus on the politics around the act or the ACA’s effect on poor or uninsured Americans. Ultimately, results indicate that framing of the ACA reflects the issues and events presently affecting the nation, which may have a larger effect on public sentiment towards the act and the American healthcare system
Navigating the Digital Landscape: Insights from Los Angeles Instagram Content Creators
Navigating the Digital Landscape: Insights from Los Angeles Instagram Content Creators
This study examines the experiences of 32 Los Angeles-based Instagram content creators, focusing on their motivations, challenges, and strategies in an evolving social media landscape. Conducted through semi-structured interviews between March and May 2024, the research reveals key insights into how digital creators navigate branding, authenticity, and economic sustainability.
A central finding is the widespread rejection of the term influencer, with 75% of participants preferring to be identified as content creators to emphasize authenticity over superficial influence. While financial incentives drive content creation for most participants (72%), others prioritize non-monetary benefits such as event access and brand collaborations. However, economic challenges persist, with creators citing inconsistent compensation, undervaluation of digital labor, and unpredictable affiliate marketing earnings.
Mental health and industry pressures also emerge as critical concerns. While 72% of participants view authenticity as key to audience engagement, 90% report feeling pressured to conform to beauty standards, with only a small fraction pursuing cosmetic procedures. Additionally, 78% of creators have experienced cyberbullying, yet platform support remains limited, with only 13% successfully resolving issues with Meta.
All participants acknowledge the unpredictability of Instagram’s algorithm, shaping their content strategies around reels, frequent posting, and high-quality production. The study highlights the urgent need for industry standards that ensure fair compensation, mental health support, and greater platform transparency. Addressing these challenges is crucial for fostering a sustainable digital ecosystem that balances creative freedom, economic viability, and creator well-being
