Shared Pathways Between Rejection Sensitivity and Physical Sensitivities

    No full text
Interpersonal rejection sensitivity refers to the heightened tendency to perceive negative or hurtful intent in others\u27 actions, even when no such intent is present (Rohner et al., 2023). To assess this, Rohner and colleagues developed the Interpersonal Rejection Sensitivity Scale, which has shown strong psychometric properties across over 3,000 participants from eight cultures. The goal of this study was to explore associations between the Interpersonal Rejection Sensitivity Scale and sensitivities to physical symptoms of anxiety, pain, illness, and injury. Research suggests that social and physical pain are influenced by similar neurobiological (e.g., Kross et al., 2011) and immunologic (e.g., Slavich et al., 2010) systems, indicating a shared adaptive function (MacDonald & Leary, 2005). The study involved 106 participants (68.9% women, 28.3% men, 2.8% non-binary), with an average age of 19.35 years (SD = 1.27), who completed an online survey. They responded to the Interpersonal Rejection Sensitivity Scale (Rohner et al., 2023), Anxiety Sensitivity Index (Reiss et al., 1986), Pain Sensitivity Index (Gross, 1991), and Illness/Injury Sensitivity Index – Revised (Carleton & Asmundson, 2006). Cronbach’s alphas ranged from .89 to .92. Results showed positive correlations between rejection sensitivity scores and other measures: Anxiety Sensitivity Index (r = .40, p = .000), Pain Sensitivity Index (r = .40, p =.000), Fear of Injury (r = .27, p = .005), and Fear of Illness (r = .35, p = .000). These findings suggest that social rejection sensitivity is linked to heightened sensitivity to physical symptoms, supporting the idea that social and physical pain share overlapping emotional and neurobiological pathways

Understanding the Behavior of Emerging Adults Through Perceptions of Childhood Parental Rejection

According to Interpersonal Acceptance-Rejection Theory (IPARTheory), feeling loved and accepted in childhood is crucial (Rohner, 2021). Cross-cultural studies show that unmet parental acceptance can lead to negative outcomes. This study examined how perceived parental rejection in childhood affects emerging adults’ romantic relationships, friendships, social interactions, and coping behaviors. A total of 174 participants (67% women, 32% men, 1 non-binary; M age = 19.86, SD = 1.55) completed an online survey with established scales measuring perceived parental rejection, relationship dynamics, coping strategies, and social behaviors (Cronbach’s α = .76–.95). Perceived maternal rejection was linked to more withdrawal in romantic relationships (r = .28, p = .03), attachment-related anxiety in friendships (r = .24, p = .002), disorganized romantic attachment (r = .21, p = .03), alcohol/cigarette use as coping (r = .19, p = .01), and less religious coping (r = -.16, p = .04). Perceived paternal rejection was associated with more withdrawal in romantic relationships (r = .40, p = .002), attachment-related anxiety in friendships (r = .33, p \u3c .001), disorganized romantic attachment (r = .30, p = .001), alcohol/cigarette use (r = .33, p \u3c .001), less social support (r = -.18, p = .02), and greater fear of intimacy (r = .29, p = .03). Findings highlight the lasting impact of childhood rejection on emerging adults\u27 relationships and coping behaviors, emphasizing its continued significance

You\u27re Losing Yourself: How IMC Tactics Can Inform SAG-AFTRA\u27s Artistic Fight Against AI

    No full text
Few creative unions are better known than the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), which has been a champion of entertainment artists since 1933. Known for Hollywood halting strikes, such as the 2023\u27s 4-month anti-AI writers and actors strike, which cost the industry an estimated 6.5billion,SAGAFTRAhasattemptedtopositionitselfasachampionofartisticrightsinthenewlyemerginglandscapeofAIintegrationintheentertainmentindustry.However,asAIadvances,SAGAFTRAmaybelosingitspower.RecentdatahasshownthattheprofitpotentialofintegratingAIintotheentertainmentindustrymayoutpacethelossesfromSAGAFTRAstrikes,withsomeexpertsbelievingthatAIlicensingdealsbetweenAIcompaniesandstudioswouldbeworthatleast6.5 billion, SAG-AFTRA has attempted to position itself as a champion of artistic rights in the newly emerging landscape of AI integration in the entertainment industry. However, as AI advances, SAG-AFTRA may be losing its power. Recent data has shown that the profit potential of integrating AI into the entertainment industry may outpace the losses from SAG-AFTRA strikes, with some experts believing that AI licensing deals between AI companies and studios would be worth at least 10 billion over the next two years. Additionally, though SAG-AFTRA’s 2023 strike garnered much attention and public support, their current anti-AI strike has met with far less notability and public appeal. Therefore, as studio incentives to pursue AI increase and public perception of AI as a threat wanes, SAG-AFTRA must find a new way to gain authority over the studios on behalf of the artists it represents. In the context of this shifting landscape, labor advocates must now ask: How can IMC tactics be leveraged to gain public support when advocating against major corporate actors, especially in the context of rapid technological change? This question can be addressed by researching and developing an effective anti-AI IMC campaign on behalf of SAG-AFTRA, with the goal of providing a blueprint and case study for other labor unions and social advocacy groups to leverage IMC techniques to gain public support for vital causes. While this research project primarily analyzes the campaign potential in the California-based entertainment industry, the research can be expanded to apply to the national and global dynamics of labor unions threatened by the use of AI. The project seeks to research and develop an effective anti-AI IMC campaign on behalf of SAG-AFTRA by analyzing existing IMC theories and strategies, and applying these concepts to the current trends surrounding AI use, SAG-AFTRA strikes, and the entertainment industry and public response to these growing issues. This can be done by courting public opinion through an Integrated Marketing and Communications campaign that uses fear-provoking, pro-human, anti-AI labor messaging such as You\u27re Losing Yourself and AI Art Is Exploitation to communicate the danger of losing human artistry in the media consumers know and love. Based on current research, an effective IMC strategy highlighting SAG-AFTRA\u27s fight against AI has the potential to bring their paid promotion and public appeal in competition with major studios that already use IMC techniques, providing SAG-AFTRA greater leverage when campaigning for legislative change and the power to call for mass boycotts of studios that use AI unethically

Troubling Trends: ADA Definition-of-Disability Cases 2019–2023

    Get PDF
This empirical Article continues my every-five-year tradition of examining every federal case discussing the definition of disability since the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was amended, effective 2009. The results of this research from the third five-year period (2019–2023) are disappointing in both familiar and surprising ways. Similar to the 2014–2018 period, we continue to see way too many courts incorrectly applying (or not even citing to) the ADA Amendments Act. Moreover, I discovered several new troubling trends in this dataset that raise the possibility that we might be heading toward another backlash against ADA plaintiffs. This Article presents my findings and briefly addresses the implications of this discouraging data
