The social status adversity and health in daily life moments study: ecological momentary assessment and ambulatory health assessments to examine meaning and mechanisms

Background: African Americans and those of lower socioeconomic status (SES) are at disproportionate risk for hypertension- and cardiovascular-disease-related mortality relative to their counterparts. Progress in reducing these disparities is slowed by the facts that these disparities are difficult to mitigate in older adults and early origins of these disparities are poorly understood. The Social Status Adversity and Health in Daily Life Moments Study aims to precisely understand the proximal cognitive-emotional mechanisms by which unique social exposures disproportionately impacting these populations influence blood pressure (BP) parameters early in the lifespan and determine which individuals are more at risk. Methods: The study uses ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) monitoring to assess race- and SES-based factors as they manifest in daily life moments alongside simultaneously manifesting cognitive-emotional states and ABP. A sample of 270 healthy African Americans between the ages of 18 and 30 is being recruited to complete two periods of 2-day, 2-night hourly ABP monitoring alongside hourly EMA assessments of socioeconomic strain, unfair treatment, and neighborhood strain during the waking hours. ABP data will be used to calculate ecologically valid measures of BP reactivity, variability, and nocturnal dipping. Other measures include actigraphy equipment worn during the monitoring period and comprehensive assessment of behavioral and psychosocial risk and resilience factors. Multilevel and multiple linear regression analyses will examine which momentary social adversity exposures and cognitive-emotional reactions to these exposures are associated with worse BP parameters and for whom. Discussion: This is the first time that this research question is approached in this manner. The Social Status Adversity and Health in Daily Life Moments Study will identify the cognitive-emotional mechanisms by which the most impactful race- and SES-based exposures influence multiple BP parameters in African American emerging adults. Further, it will identify those most at risk for the health impacts of these exposures. Achievement of these aims will shape the field’s ability to develop novel interventions targeting reduction of these exposures and modification of reactions to these exposures as well as attend to those subpopulations most needing intervention within the African American emerging adult population

The Impact of Relationship Intelligence on Team-based Practice: An Application for the Private Sector in Mainland China

    Get PDF
This article aims to examine the impact of developing and applying relationship intelligence in team-based practice to provide a clear understanding of the role relationship intelligence plays in team productivity in mainland China. Relationship intelligence, a component of emotional intelligence, focuses on interpersonal interactions that are crucial in team-building but receives less attention. Exploratory qualitative research was undertaken, with emotional intelligence as the theoretical framework and the input-process-output criteria indicating group effectiveness. Data collection was based on semi-structured interviews with managers and staff of the private sector based in mainland China after utilizing the Strengths Deployment Inventory 2.0 as a learning tool. The findings identify three ways in which the integration of relationship intelligence positively affected team practice: high overall performance, a positive work climate, and improved attitudes toward coworkers and work-related tasks. The positive outcomes provide researchers and practitioners with valuable information on how relationship intelligence might be leveraged to enhance communication, collaboration, and overall team performance

Initial Examination of Identity Development When Starting in an Online, Global, Collaborative, Learning Environment

    No full text
This poster examines identity thinking from individual interviews of students as they begin participating in an online, collaborative, global learning environment. Transcripts of nine adolescent students in the US and Kenya of interviews taken in March 2023 and then September 2023 were examined using Epistemic Network Analysis to identify any changes in thinking amongst the students. Results indicated in March 2023, students indicated challenges related to their personality and importance of social interactions, then shifted to identifying challenges with STEM topics and being more collaborative in September 2023

Reimagining School Integration: Possibilities for the Future

    No full text
Since the peak of school desegregation in the late 1980s, schools across the nation have been resegregating such that schools are now as segregated as they were during the late 1960s. Segregation is systematically linked to unequal educational opportunities and outcomes while integration, when well structured, is associated with numerous short-term and long-term academic and social benefits for individuals and society. In a time when public education is under attack and our nation is deeply divided along the lines of race, class, and politics, the potential of integration to create more equitable educational opportunities and outcomes for individual students as well as greater social cohesion for our democratic, pluralistic society is more important than ever. Seventy years after the Supreme Court’s landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision ruled that segregated schools are inherently unequal, this book reimagines what integration is and could be in our nation’s current context of racial and political polarization, the expansion of unregulated choice in public education, and an increasingly diverse, multiracial public school enrollment. Through an exploration of research and policy, this book develops a new conceptualization of integration by describing the contemporary drivers of segregation and recommending strategies to create a more equitable, meaningful, equal -status form of educational integration for the future. This book is a valuable resource for policymakers, scholars, educators, and concerned citizens who are invested in learning about one way to help create a more equitable and just education system

The Latina career journey: experiences of Latinas in accounting

    Get PDF
Latina voices remain largely silent in the scholarship on leadership, and their representation in leadership roles lags behind other minority and majority groups. This research explored the Latina career journey through in-depth narrative interviews with 19 Latinas who told the stories of how they carry out their role, act on opportunities, navigate between cultures, and overcome challenges. Through comprehensive qualitative analysis using a grounded theory approach, a theoretical framework emerged that brings to light the larger social and cultural forces that impact the management arena and function as levers that, when activated, hinder and facilitate the emergence of Latina leaders. The primary themes included the pervasive interplay of cultural scripts, and barriers and biases as Latinas progress through three sets of processes: (1) identity formation, social categorization, and acculturation; (2) deployment of resilience and coping mechanisms during role navigation; and (3) leader emergence in the workplace context. These themes illustrate the unique lived experiences of Latinas striving toward leadership aspirations. The framework highlights strategies Latinas utilize in balancing personal and professional life while navigating with identity, cultural expectations, social norms, and cultural adaptation. Findings indicate concrete policies and actions that can be taken in workplaces to increase the representation of Latinas in leadership roles. The study is a testament to the significance of intersectionality in social identities and advocates for more inclusive workplace practices that appreciate diversity and actively break down barriers for all marginalized groups
