    Exaptation growth strategy

    This dissertation attempted to answer the following question: How can firms develop an Exaptation Growth Strategy (EGS) for value generation? Exaptation, which has the power to unlock new forms and functions of resources, is an evolutionary mechanism from biology that is relatively unknown in strategic management research. Value generation encompasses value discovery, creation, delivery, capture, and sharing activities. The study posited that firms and entrepreneurs can generate growth by following the causal mechanisms induced from the exaptation research and detailed in the EGS model. The research was based on a qualitative design that combined deductive and inductive approaches, and the research method consisted of multiple phases. Phase 1 developed a theoretical model based on academic literature in exaptation, technology, complexity science, innovation, and management domains. Phase 2 built a multiple-case study that described and compared six cases where exaptations had occurred. Finally, the model was refined in Phase 3, leading to an updated EGS model that is more fit for practitioners to develop new products and services through exaptation. The study resulted in a process-based theory that explains how exaptations occur, describes which causal mechanisms are at play, and prescribes how agents can intentionally induce exaptations by conducting business experiments with their assets and resources. By integrating exaptive approaches with growth methods already embedded in most organizations, practitioners can find exaptations with substantial market value and profit by doing more with less.     Peak detection in intracranial pressure signal waveforms: a comparative study

    Background: The monitoring and analysis of quasi-periodic biological signals such as electrocardiography (ECG), intracranial pressure (ICP), and cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) waveforms plays an important role in the early detection of adverse patient events and contributes to improved care management in the intensive care unit (ICU). This work quantitatively evaluates existing computational frameworks for automatically extracting peaks within ICP waveforms. Methods: Peak detection techniques based on state-of-the-art machine learning models were evaluated in terms of robustness to varying noise levels. The evaluation was performed on a dataset of ICP signals assembled from 700 h of monitoring from 64 neurosurgical patients. The groundtruth of the peak locations was established manually on a subset of 13, 611 pulses. Additional evaluation was performed using a simulated dataset of ICP with controlled temporal dynamics and noise. Results: The quantitative analysis of peak detection algorithms applied to individual waveforms indicates that most techniques provide acceptable accuracy with a mean absolute error (MAE) ≤10 ms without noise. In the presence of a higher noise level, however, only kernel spectral regression and random forest remain below that error threshold while the performance of other techniques deteriorates. Our experiments also demonstrated that tracking methods such as Bayesian inference and long short-term memory (LSTM) can be applied continuously and provide additional robustness in situations where single pulse analysis methods fail, such as missing data. Conclusion: While machine learning-based peak detection methods require manually labeled data for training, these models outperform conventional signal processing ones based on handcrafted rules and should be considered for peak detection in modern frameworks. In particular, peak tracking methods that incorporate temporal information between successive periods of the signals have demonstrated in our experiments to provide more robustness to noise and temporary artifacts that commonly arise as part of the monitoring setup in the clinical setting

This will be presented in four sections: Section One introduces relevant terminology and concepts, and Section Two illustrates the congruency and the correlation between the underlying theories of learning and theories of teaching. Shifting to a new learning paradigm will be discussed in section four, whereas the last section highlights the growing call to transform education

    The intergenerational transmission of culture through attachment-based parenting practices and their effect on child neurology: A systematic review

    The process of intergenerational transmission process is complex and involves a dynamic exchange of explicit teachings, implicit cues, and lived experiences within the parent-child relationship. This systematic review examined the intricate relationship between the intergenerational transmission of cultural values, attachment-based parenting, and child neurology through a mixed-methods approach. Findings suggest that culture is transmitted via intergenerational transmission in the parent-child dyad through parental security and trust, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and cultural influences on parenting practices. Moreover, the literature suggests that attachment-based parenting affects the intergenerational transmission of culture, values, and beliefs through the parent-child relationship quality, open communication, and emotional bonding. Incidentally, these parental qualities correlate highly with authoritative parenting practices. Moreover, results imply that attachment-based parenting affects the neurology of a child through enhanced brain development, positive neurological outcomes, buffering adversity, and greater volumes in specific brain regions. Clinical implications suggest that attachment-based interventions can be beneficial in addressing mood and neurodevelopmental disorders in children, particularly in the context of intergenerational transmission of ACEs and acculturation challenges in migrant families

    An examination of the facilitators and barriers for implementing environmental sustainability plans into corporate strategy

    This study examined how organizations integrate environmental sustainability and corporate strategy, describing that intersection as strategic sustainability. The goal of the study was to use qualitative interviews of public American corporations to understand the facilitators and barriers to strategic sustainability. The study identified three facilitators (i.e., emerging regulations, customer demand, and leadership) and two barriers (i.e., data quality and education). These results suggest corporations leverage upcoming regulations, leaders who advocate for sustainability, and customer demand to embed sustainability while improving their education and data quality. Additionally, the research suggests more quantitative research and validation of the results

    Servant Leadership is a phenomenon that has existed for centuries and continues to make waves today. While entities using this leadership style are generally non-profits, the United States government has chosen to use it in some of its federal agencies. More specifically, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs enlists Servant Leadership to achieve its organizational goals, like retaining employees. The purpose of this study was to understand the perceptions of the role Servant Leadership plays in assisting supervisors in retaining employees. The research question was: How do supervisors perceive Servant Leadership’s role in retention at the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center? The research focused on the intersection of Servant Leadership and retention and themes were discovered through using the Framework Method. The governmental healthcare landscape and supervisory roles in 2024 constituted the backdrop for this study

    Differences in the neurological functioning of females and males during the human sexual response cycle: a quantitative systematic review

    The psychology field recognizes differences between females and males. Yet, there is a lack of research examining neurobiological sex differences, and a sophisticated understanding of neurobiological contributors that explain these sex differences related to sexuality is lacking. An integrative systematic review of the literature examined differences in the neurological functioning between females and males during the human sexual response cycle (SRC). This study investigated sex differences and commonalities in regional neural activation during the four stages of the human SRC (i.e., excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution). The main result of this study is that the differences between females and males were found to be most prominent during the excitement and plateau phases and that similarities were found during the orgasmic phase. Furthermore, the conditions for females to become aroused seem to be more complex and multifaceted than they are for males. These findings could allow researchers and clinicians to treat patients with sexual dysfunction and develop effective clinical interventions
